Usually, you buy permission to access digital content, not an unrestricted copy that you can transfer, resell, or keep independently of the store. A checkout button labeled “buy” can represent a license governed by an account, digital-rights controls, device rules, and the platform’s continuing ability to distribute the title.
That is different from owning a physical copy, owning the copyright, and having a license to use a digital product. The exact result depends on the service, the content, your agreement, and consumer law where you live.
Three different meanings of “ownership”
People use “own” to describe several rights that are legally and practically separate:

The object can usually be given away or resold under the rules that apply in your country, although copying the work or making it publicly available can still infringe copyright.
- Owning copyright: The copyright holder controls rights such as reproduction, distribution, and public performance. Paying for a film, song, or game almost never transfers those rights to an individual customer.
- Holding a digital access license: A store grants permission to use or view content under stated conditions. Those conditions can limit transfer, copying, devices, accounts, and commercial use.
A payment proves that you paid the price the service requested. It does not, by itself, answer whether you received a transferable file, a perpetual right, or access that survives the service losing distribution rights.

What the major agreements say
The following examples come from selected clauses in current platform agreements. They illustrate different contractual approaches; they are not a universal rule for every store or every country.

Prime Video: a limited viewing license
Amazon’s Prime Video Terms of Use state: “Subject to payment of any charges to rent, purchase, or access Digital Content, and your compliance with all terms of this Agreement, Amazon grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, limited license, during the applicable Viewing Period, to access and view the Digital Content in accordance with the Usage Rules, for personal, non-commercial, private use.”
Several words do practical work here. “Non-transferable” means the permission is not presented as something you can assign to another person. “Non-sublicensable” means you cannot grant someone else a downstream license. “Limited” and “Usage Rules” point you back to restrictions on how the title may be watched, copied, or moved. The wording supports treating a Prime Video purchase as a contractual viewing right rather than as an unrestricted movie file.
This does not prove that every title is always removed or that every customer loses access in the same way. It means the agreement defines access through a license and its conditions, so you should not assume that a purchase has the same resale, lending, or archival properties as a disc.
Apple: downloads can still depend on distribution rights
Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions include this warning: “Though it is unlikely, subsequent to your purchase, Content may be removed from the Services and become unavailable for further download or access from Apple (for instance, because Apple loses its right from the Content provider to make it available).”

The clause addresses a risk many buyers miss: a store may stop being authorized to distribute a title after you paid. It does not say that all purchased Apple content will disappear, and it does not say that all content is DRM-free. Where content is DRM-free, Apple describes use on a reasonable number of compatible devices you own or control; that allowance is narrower than a promise of unlimited copying, resale, or use on any future device.
In practical terms, a downloaded file can be easier to play than a stream while still being governed by format, device, account, and service terms. Keep the distinction between “I have a local download today” and “I own an independent, transferable copy forever.”

Steam: the agreement expressly rejects title
For games, the Steam Subscriber Agreement says: “Your license confers no title or ownership in the Content and Services.” Steam describes access through “Subscriptions,” and an individual game can add its own end-user license agreement.
That language is unusually direct about the contract’s position: paying for a game does not give you title to the game or to the service. You receive the rights the agreement and the applicable game terms grant. Those terms can matter for account access, online features, updates, anti-cheat systems, and other service-dependent functions, so reading only the store page can leave out important conditions.
What a digital purchase normally does not let you do
Unless the applicable terms and law say otherwise, do not assume that a purchase permits you to:

- Transfer the title to another person while keeping your own access.
- Resell, rent, lend, sublicense, or distribute the file.
- Remove digital-rights controls or bypass technical protection.
- Make unlimited copies for other devices or people.
- Play it after closing the account that holds the purchase record.
- Use every feature without an internet connection, launcher, server, or authentication check.
- Continue downloading it if the provider’s distribution rights end.
These are default cautions, not a finding that every service forbids every action. Some agreements provide specific exceptions, and mandatory consumer protections may modify contractual language in your jurisdiction.

How to check what you actually received
Use this checklist before treating a digital purchase as equivalent to a physical copy. Save the terms in effect when you buy if the service makes them available; terms and content rights can change.
- Identify the transaction type. Confirm whether the button creates a purchase, rental, subscription entitlement, preorder, season pass, or in-game license. A rental normally has an explicit viewing period; a subscription normally ends when the subscription or account entitlement ends.
- Find the governing agreement. Open the service’s current terms, then look for “Digital Content,” “Usage Rules,” “Subscriptions,” “purchases,” or “licenses.” For a game, open any linked end-user license agreement as well.
- Read the transfer language. Search for “transfer,” “assign,” “resell,” “sublicense,” “family,” and “account.” “Non-transferable” is a clear warning that the permission is tied to you or your account.
- Check download and device rules. Note whether downloads are permitted, the formats offered, the number of compatible devices, offline limits, and whether an approved app or periodic sign-in is required.
- Check availability clauses. Look for statements about titles being removed, becoming unavailable, losing provider rights, or being subject to a viewing period. These clauses tell you what happens if the store can no longer distribute the work.
- Separate offline playback from ownership. Test what remains playable after disconnecting from the internet, but do not treat a successful test as a legal transfer right. A local file can still be encrypted, account-bound, or restricted by the license.
- Check account recovery and closure rules. Determine whether access depends on one account, what happens after a regional move, and whether a closed or suspended account can be restored. Never assume customer support can recreate an entitlement.
- Check local law before disputing the result. Consumer, copyright, contract, and resale rules differ by country and sometimes by state or province. A contract summary cannot replace jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
What happens when a service changes or loses rights?
The title is removed from sale
Removal from a storefront can mean new customers cannot buy the title. It does not automatically establish that every previous purchaser loses access, because the outcome depends on the service’s agreement, technical system, and applicable law. Apple’s terms expressly warn that content may become unavailable for further download or access if Apple loses the right to make it available.
The service changes its app or device support
A service can retire an app, change supported operating systems, or alter authentication requirements. A purchase record may remain in your account while an old device can no longer run the required software. Check the current device and download rules rather than assuming that a file will work on future hardware.
Your account is suspended or closed
When access is account-based, the account is part of the practical chain of access. Suspension, forgotten credentials, a regional change, or closure can prevent playback even if you paid years earlier. Keep recovery email and security details current, and retain receipts, but recognize that records do not turn a license into a transferable copy.

A game’s online service shuts down
A game may install locally yet rely on servers for authentication, multiplayer, cloud saves, updates, or other features. The store agreement and the game’s own end-user terms determine what remains usable. A shutdown of one feature is not automatically proof that the entire game entitlement has vanished, but neither is installation proof that every feature will work indefinitely.

Music
Music sold as an ordinary downloadable file may be easier to copy between compatible devices than a stream, especially when it is DRM-free. That still does not grant copyright, a right to distribute the track, or permission to share it publicly. Streaming subscriptions are a different category: they generally provide access during the subscription rather than a purchased personal download.
Movies and television
Video services commonly combine account authentication, usage rules, regional licensing, and technical protection. A “buy” label can therefore coexist with restrictions on transfer, copying, and continued availability. A downloaded film may improve offline convenience without becoming an unrestricted archival master.
Games
Games often combine the software license with a launcher, updates, account checks, downloadable content, and online servers. A game-specific end-user license can add conditions beyond the storefront’s general subscriber agreement. Review both documents, especially when a title requires an online connection or a separate publisher account.

Can I give the purchase to a family member? Only if the service’s family, household, or transfer rules permit it. Sharing login credentials can violate account terms even when the recipient lives with you.

Can I sell it after I finish? Digital licenses are often non-transferable, so a sale may be prohibited even where physical resale is customary. Look for assignment and resale language rather than relying on the word “buy.”
Does downloading protect me if the store removes the title? Not necessarily. Apple’s terms specifically contemplate content becoming unavailable for further download or access after purchase. Download status and long-term legal or technical availability are separate questions.
Does DRM-free mean I own the copyright? No. DRM-free describes the absence of a particular technical restriction. Copyright and distribution rights remain with the rights holder, and the store’s terms can still limit sharing or commercial use.

Not necessarily. The agreement is important evidence of the service’s intended rights, but mandatory consumer and copyright rules vary by jurisdiction. A local lawyer or consumer authority is the right source for a dispute about your specific country or state.
Bottom line for buyers
Treat a digital checkout as the purchase of a defined permission, not as automatic ownership of an independent object. Prime Video’s cited terms grant a limited, non-transferable viewing license; Steam’s agreement says its license gives no title or ownership; and Apple warns that a purchased title can become unavailable if distribution rights change. Before paying, verify transfer rules, download and device limits, account dependence, content-specific terms, and the law that applies where you live.
