No. You can start with Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater without playing any earlier Metal Gear game. PlayStation’s official FAQ calls it a remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and says its story occurs at the very beginning of the saga, making it a suitable starting point.
Why Delta works as a first Metal Gear game
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is not a sequel that assumes you remember the events of several older releases. It is a full, enhanced remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, originally released in 2004. The remake keeps the same story, characters, voice acting and music, while rebuilding the presentation in Unreal Engine 5 and adding quality-of-life options such as an optional modern control style.

The important distinction is between release order and story chronology. The series was released over many years, but Snake Eater is set at the start of the saga in the 1960s Cold War. You are introduced to Naked Snake, the soldier who will later become known as Big Boss. Because the game depicts an early chapter in that character’s life, it can establish the relevant background itself.

A 1960s Cold War operation
The setting is a Cold War-era mission rather than a continuation of a modern-day plot. Naked Snake is sent to infiltrate Soviet territory, giving the game its own political circumstances, objectives and cast. You do not need a timeline lesson from the other games to understand why the operation is happening or what Snake is trying to accomplish.
#1 Best Overall
- ERA: THE 1960'S BITTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Przeżyj historię jako zimna wojna i zmiany krajobrazu geopolitycznego
- GAME:TRUST INSTINCT BATTLE: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, short circuit battle, stalking, interviewing, climbing, hunting and injury treatment
- SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators
Sokolov, Volgin and The Boss
The central assignment is to rescue weapons engineer Sokolov after Colonel Volgin captures him. Snake must also confront The Boss, his former mentor. Those relationships are explained within Snake Eater; they are not dependent on having met the characters in an earlier release. The game’s focus on Snake’s origins also gives later events context without requiring you to know those later events first.
Chronology is not a prerequisite
Recognizing names such as Big Boss or The Boss can add significance to certain moments, but recognition is optional background, not an entry requirement. A new player can follow the mission, understand the personal conflict and reach the ending using the information supplied by Delta itself.
Do you need to play the 2004 MGS3 first?
If you have never played Metal Gear
No. Starting with Delta is the clearest route if your immediate goal is to understand this game. You receive the original story in a modernized presentation, with the same narrative, characters, voice work and music identified by PlayStation’s FAQ. You avoid spending time learning an older control scheme before reaching the version you actually intend to play.

If you already own the original
Playing the 2004 release first is an optional comparison exercise. It can show how the remake presents the same material with Unreal Engine 5 and its added quality-of-life choices, but it is not needed to decode Delta’s plot. If you have limited time, go directly to Delta; if you enjoy studying remakes, playing both can be worthwhile as two presentations of one story.
Rank #2
- ERA: THE 1960'S BATTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change
- GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries
- SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators
If you have played another Metal Gear title
Earlier games may make recurring characters, themes or later consequences feel more familiar. That additional context is a bonus rather than a prerequisite. Delta is still structured around its 1960s operation, so a player coming from another entry can begin here without completing the rest of the series.
What the remake changes—and what it keeps
| Element | What Delta provides |
|---|---|
| Story | The story of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater |
| Characters | The same characters described in the official FAQ |
| Voice acting and music | The same voice acting and music as the original, according to PlayStation |
| Technology | An enhanced remake built with Unreal Engine 5 |
| Controls and usability | Quality-of-life features, including an optional modern control style |
This combination matters for newcomers. You are not being asked to choose between an unfamiliar new story and an old game you have not played. Delta uses a known narrative foundation while updating how it looks and feels. For returning players, the unchanged story and performances make the remake recognizable; for first-time players, the chronological placement makes it self-contained.
Choose your play order by your goal
Goal: understand Delta with the least preparation
- Start with Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater.
- Read or watch no prior series summary unless you personally want extra background.
- After finishing, decide whether the characters and consequences make you curious about the wider saga.
This order follows the game’s own chronological position and avoids spoilers from later chapters.

Play Delta first, then use Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 as a way to investigate earlier entries and broader series context. PlayStation identifies that collection as a related title, but its official material does not publish a single definitive, complete play order for every Metal Gear release. Treat any sequence you find elsewhere as a recommendation, not a rule imposed by the series.

Goal: compare the remake with its source
Play the 2004 Snake Eater first and Delta second. This is an editorial preference for comparison, not a requirement for comprehension. It is most useful when you care about how a remake changes presentation, controls and usability while retaining the same narrative foundation.
Goal: follow release history
You can play the 2004 original before Delta and then move through other releases in publication order, but that approach prioritizes historical context over the simplest first experience. It may also expose you to stories set later in the saga before you reach the beginning chronologically. Choose it only if seeing the series evolve is more important to you than avoiding that back-and-forth.
Delta versus the older collection
The two options serve different purposes rather than competing as mandatory prerequisites.
| Question | Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater | Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it fit chronologically? | At the beginning of the saga, in the 1960s Cold War | Provides access to earlier series context identified by PlayStation as related material |
| What is the presentation? | A full, enhanced remake of the 2004 game using Unreal Engine 5 | Earlier entries presented through a collection rather than a new remake of Snake Eater |
| Who is it for? | Someone who wants the Snake Eater story in a modernized form or needs a starting point | Someone who wants to explore more of the wider Metal Gear saga after choosing an entry point |
| Is it required before the other? | No prior game is required before Delta | Optional follow-up context after Delta |
The collection can deepen your appreciation of recurring ideas and later consequences, but buying or finishing it first does not unlock a hidden explanation needed to begin Delta.
Rank #4
- Time section: the 1960s battle of world views: relive history and track how the Cold War and the geopolitical landscape are changing
- PLAY EXPERIENCE: SURVIVAL FIGHT OF INSTINCTS: Outwit opponents with methods such as camouflage, melee, sneak, interrogation, climbing, hunting and treating wounds
- The Jungle Battle of Reptiles: Compete with an environment where traps catch opponents and prey, dangers lurk in the shadows and sounds attract predators
Platform and release details
Konami announced Delta for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. PlayStation lists the PS5 release date as August 28, 2025. Availability of a particular physical or digital edition can vary by platform and region, so check the current store listing for the system you use.
These platform details do not change the recommended order: on any announced platform, Delta remains a valid first entry because its story begins at the saga’s chronological starting point.
Common points of confusion
“Is Delta a sequel to a game I have to know?”
No. It is a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, not a follow-up chapter that assumes completion of the other games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Will I miss references if I start here?”
You may notice recurring names or themes differently from a long-time fan, and later games can give certain outcomes additional weight. That is added context, not missing information required to follow the operation in front of you.
“Should I learn that Snake becomes Big Boss before playing?”
The protagonist’s identity as Naked Snake and his later name, Big Boss, are useful orientation points, but knowing them does not replace the story’s explanations. If you prefer to discover character history through the game, avoid reading detailed summaries before starting.
“Does the modern control option make the original unnecessary?”
It makes Delta more approachable for players who prefer contemporary controls, but it does not erase the original’s historical value. The choice depends on whether you want the 2004 experience, the remake’s updated presentation, or both.
Quick Recap
A practical recommendation
- New to the series: play Delta first and judge afterward whether you want more Metal Gear.
- Interested in the full saga: begin with Delta, then explore Master Collection Vol. 1 rather than treating it as homework.
- Already familiar with MGS3: choose Delta for its Unreal Engine 5 presentation and quality-of-life options, or play both to compare them.
- Concerned about spoilers: avoid broad series summaries before playing; Delta supplies the information needed for its own Cold War story.
