No. You should be able to start with Fallout 5 without playing Fallout 1 through Fallout 4. Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 5 is in development, but it has not published a setting, protagonist, plot synopsis, release plan, or prerequisite list.
Earlier games are optional context. If you want one modern single-player introduction while you wait, Fallout 4 is the most practical choice—not because it is required, but because it is the latest released numbered game in Bethesda’s official timeline.

What Bethesda has actually confirmed about Fallout 5
Bethesda’s official 2026 announcement names Fallout 5 as one of the projects its teams are developing on Creation Engine 3. The announcement says: “Our teams are now developing The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform we’ve been building since Starfield’s launch.”

- A setting or region for Fallout 5
- A playable protagonist or character relationship
- A plot synopsis
- A required order for playing previous games
- A statement that knowledge of Fallout 4, New Vegas, or another title is necessary
Until Bethesda publishes those details, claims that a specific earlier game is mandatory are speculation. The safest expectation is that Fallout 5 will introduce its own setting and cast while drawing on the established Fallout universe.
Why Fallout games can share a canon without requiring a play order
Fallout titles occupy one fictional history, so they can refer to recurring institutions, technologies, conflicts, and consequences. Bethesda’s official timeline lists Fallout 76, Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4 as distinct entries. The list establishes chronology, not a compulsory route for players.
Each numbered single-player game is built around a different setting and cast. A new player normally learns the local political situation, terminology, and recent history through that game’s opening, dialogue, terminals, quests, and environmental storytelling. References to earlier events can reward experienced fans without preventing newcomers from understanding the immediate conflict.

Fallout has continuity, but it also has an anthology-like structure: the world persists while the location, characters, and central crisis change. That structure is why starting with a later entry is generally viable.

Can you start with Fallout 5?
Based on the information Bethesda has released, yes. There is no published requirement to complete any earlier game first. You may miss an occasional callback or recognize fewer returning references, but that is not the same as being unable to follow the new game’s main story.
The amount of useful background will depend on what Fallout 5 eventually emphasizes. A story centered on a familiar faction could make that faction’s earlier appearances interesting. A story set in a new region could make local history from previous titles largely irrelevant. Because Bethesda has not identified either element, a definitive “play this one title first” rule cannot be made yet.
Which Fallout game should you play before Fallout 5?
If you are new to Fallout
Choose Fallout 4 if you want one accessible, modern, single-player introduction. Bethesda’s official page records its release for November 10, 2015, and Bethesda’s timeline identifies it as the latest released numbered entry. It demonstrates the series’ modern 3D presentation, exploration loop, settlement systems, dialogue-driven quests, and approach to post-nuclear world-building.

If you want classic Fallout history
Play Fallout and Fallout 2 for the earliest major setting and historical context, then move to New Vegas if you want a later game that explores different regional powers and factions. This is a history tour rather than a prerequisite path.
The first two games come from an older design era, with different controls, presentation, and pacing from the 3D entries. Their value is understanding the roots of the setting and the ideas that later games develop—not unlocking a condition needed to understand Fallout 5.
If you prefer Bethesda’s older 3D design
Play Fallout 3 and then Fallout 4. They let you compare two generations of Bethesda’s 3D approach while visiting separate regions and casts. Fallout 3 is also useful if you want to see how the modern series established its exploration and quest structure before Fallout 4 refined it.

If chronology matters to you
Use Bethesda’s official timeline as a reference, beginning with Fallout 76, followed by Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4. Chronological order can make historical references easier to recognize, but it also means starting with an online-focused game and older releases. It is an option for careful lore study, not the best default for every newcomer.
How the earlier games differ
| Game | Release era and format | What it adds | How directly it prepares you for Fallout 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fallout | Classic-era, single-player entry | Foundational setting history and early-world context | Optional historical background; no requirement has been announced |
| Fallout 2 | Classic-era, single-player entry | Extends the early Fallout history and consequences | Useful for lore-focused players, but not required |
| Fallout 3 | Older 3D, single-player entry | A separate region, factions, and Bethesda’s earlier modern design | Optional; a remaster has been announced without a supplied date |
| Fallout: New Vegas | Older 3D, single-player entry | Distinct regional politics, factions, and role-playing choices | Optional; a remaster has been announced without a supplied date |
| Fallout 4 | 2015 3D, single-player entry | The latest released numbered game and the clearest modern primer | Best one-game introduction, but still not mandatory |
| Fallout 76 | Online-focused entry | Earlier timeline context and a different multiplayer structure | Optional; its online format is not a prerequisite for a future single-player game |
Is Fallout 5 connected to Fallout 4 or New Vegas?
It will share the Fallout canon, but the degree of direct connection is unknown. “Connected” can mean several different things:
Shared historical universe
All of the games contribute to one broad fictional history. Playing any earlier title can make recurring references and long-running themes more recognizable.
Returning factions or institutions
A future game may revisit organizations that appeared elsewhere. Recognition can add flavor, but a new installment normally explains the role those groups play in its own conflict.

Direct plot continuation
Bethesda has not said that Fallout 5 continues Fallout 4’s protagonist, follows a particular ending, or resumes New Vegas’s unresolved political situation. Do not assume that any earlier game’s ending is required knowledge or will be treated as the sole canon outcome.
Until a setting and story are announced, it is accurate to describe Fallout 4 and New Vegas as optional preparation, not direct prerequisites.

A practical preparation plan
- Decide whether you want familiarity or obligation. There is no announced requirement, so play earlier games only if their worlds, mechanics, or stories appeal to you.
- Use Fallout 4 as the default starting point. It is the newest released numbered single-player game in Bethesda’s timeline and the closest available example of the modern 3D formula.
- Add Fallout 3 or New Vegas for variety. Choose Fallout 3 for Bethesda’s earlier 3D design or New Vegas for a different regional and factional focus.
- Go back to Fallout and Fallout 2 only for deeper history. Their older interfaces and pacing are part of the experience, not a barrier you must clear.
- Check Bethesda’s announcements when story details arrive. A confirmed setting or returning faction could identify a more useful optional game, but it would not automatically make that game mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until you have completed every game. The timeline contains multiple eras and formats; finishing all of them is a large personal project, not a stated entry requirement.
- Assuming chronological order is always best. It is useful for lore tracking, but starting with the earliest games may not suit someone looking for modern controls and presentation.
- Treating a remaster announcement as a release schedule. Bethesda has announced remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but no dates are supplied in the cited announcement.
- Confusing canon references with required plot knowledge. A callback can reward longtime players while the new game still explains its own stakes.
- Believing Fallout 4 is mandatory because it is the latest numbered release. Its status makes it the most convenient single primer, not an official prerequisite.
The clearest answer to the common questions
“Do I need to play Fallout 1–4 first?”
No. Bethesda has not published a prerequisite list, and no announced story detail makes those games necessary.

“Can I start with Fallout 5?”
Yes, based on the information currently available. Expect the game to introduce its own immediate setting and conflict, while accepting that some references may be richer for returning players.
“Which Fallout game should I play before Fallout 5?”
Choose Fallout 4 if you want one modern single-player game. Choose Fallout 3, New Vegas, or the classic games only when their particular eras, regions, factions, or designs interest you.
“Is Fallout 5 connected to Fallout 4 or New Vegas?”
It will belong to the same canon, but Bethesda has not disclosed whether it directly continues either game. Any stronger claim would go beyond the available announcement.
