No. You can start Red Dead Redemption or Bully without playing another Rockstar game first. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel that adds optional background, while Red Dead Revolver is not required for Red Dead Redemption. Bully is a separate, self-contained school story rather than part of the Red Dead narrative.
The short answer for each game
There are three different questions hidden in “what should I play first?” They concern story prerequisites, the order that best preserves surprises, and which game fits the experience you want. Separating those questions makes the choice straightforward.
- Red Dead Redemption: Start here if you want the original release-order experience. It is designed to stand alone as a complete single-player story.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: You may play it first because it is a prequel, but it is optional context rather than a required introduction to Red Dead Redemption.
- Red Dead Revolver: Optional. You do not need it before Red Dead Redemption.
- Bully: Start it independently. No earlier Rockstar story is identified as a prerequisite.
That means a newcomer can choose by setting and tone instead of worrying about an essential backstory. The western games share a documented prequel relationship, but Bully is maintained as its own title with separate editions and support.
What you should play before Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption 2 is useful context, not homework
Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place before Red Dead Redemption. That relationship can make its characters and history more meaningful when you eventually play the later release, but it does not make the first game difficult to understand. Netflix Tudum’s December 3, 2025 guidance states that Red Dead Redemption “stands on its own as a complete experience.”

In practical terms, you can begin with Red Dead Redemption and follow its central conflict without knowing the events of the prequel. The game’s premise is clear on its own: John Marston hunts former gang members across the American West and Mexico. The story gives you the information needed to understand his objective rather than assuming that you have completed another title.
Red Dead Revolver is not a story requirement
Red Dead Revolver is an earlier game associated with the Red Dead name, but it is not a mandatory first chapter for Red Dead Redemption. The cited FAQ specifically says players do not need to play it beforehand. Treat it as an optional historical curiosity if you are interested in the series’ earlier roots, not as a prerequisite you must complete before starting John Marston’s story.
Should you play RDR2 before RDR1?
Both orders are valid. The better choice depends on whether you value release-order storytelling or chronological history.

| Order | What it prioritizes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption, then Red Dead Redemption 2 | Release-order storytelling | You encounter the original game’s story before seeing the prequel’s added historical context. This minimizes the chance that the prequel relationship will reveal context the earlier release expected players to discover later. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2, then Red Dead Redemption | Chronological history | You experience the earlier period first and then move into the later story. Because the second game is a prequel, starting there can expose background or relationships that release order would withhold. |
Choose release order when spoilers matter most
Rockstar’s store describes Red Dead Redemption as the predecessor to the 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2. Playing the predecessor first preserves the way the series originally introduced its world and lets the prequel supply its context afterward. This is the safest route if you want to avoid learning information simply because you began with a later-made prequel.
Choose chronological order when timeline continuity matters most
Starting with Red Dead Redemption 2 gives you the earliest point in the documented relationship, followed by Red Dead Redemption. That can feel natural if you prefer to follow a fictional history from earlier events to later ones. The trade-off is spoiler exposure: a prequel can explain connections or circumstances that the original game was structured to reveal differently. This is an ordering consequence of the prequel relationship, not a claim that either game is incomplete on its own.
If you are undecided, use this rule
Play Red Dead Redemption first for the most spoiler-conscious introduction. Play Red Dead Redemption 2 first only when chronological order is more important to you than preserving every surprise associated with the original release.

It is an additional campaign associated with Red Dead Redemption; you can approach it after deciding how you want to experience the main western story. The listing’s wording supports the scope of the package, but availability can still depend on the edition and platform you select, so check the store page for the exact version you are buying.
Can you play Bully without playing GTA or another Rockstar game?
Yes. Bully can be played independently, and no earlier Rockstar story is identified as a requirement. Its setting is a school rather than the American West, and its tone is distinct from the Red Dead games. You do not need to know a Red Dead character, understand the western timeline, or complete another Rockstar open-world title before beginning it.

Rockstar’s official support hub lists separate entries for Bully: Anniversary Edition and Bully: Scholarship Edition. A Rockstar backward-compatibility announcement also lists Bully and Red Dead Redemption as separate playable titles. Those separate listings reflect independent products and support paths; they do not establish a shared story order.
Which Bully edition should a newcomer identify?
First identify the edition offered for your device. The two names that appear in Rockstar’s support materials are Bully: Anniversary Edition and Bully: Scholarship Edition. The evidence establishes that both are separately supported editions, but it does not provide a universal platform or feature matrix for every current storefront. Check the edition name, platform, region, and current compatibility information before purchase rather than assuming that one edition is available everywhere.

| Starting point | Setting and premise | Prior Rockstar game required? | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption | American West and Mexico; John Marston hunts former gang members. | No. It is presented as a complete standalone experience. | Players who want a western story and the original release-order entry point. |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | A prequel period that supplies earlier context for Red Dead Redemption. | No. It can be played first, but it is optional context rather than a prerequisite. | Players who prefer chronological history and accept possible prequel-related reveals. |
| Bully | A self-contained school setting with a different tone from the Red Dead series. | No. It is a separate Rockstar title. | Players who want a school-based story instead of a western narrative. |
The table is a starting-choice guide, not a claim that one game is objectively better. The strongest deciding factor is the kind of setting you want to inhabit. Pick a Red Dead title for the western storyline; pick Bully when its school setting is the appeal.

Decision guide: which Rockstar game should you start with?
Start with Red Dead Redemption if you want the cleanest series introduction
This is the most conservative choice for story order. You receive the standalone narrative first, then can use Red Dead Redemption 2 as a prequel that expands the historical picture. It also gives you access to the package that includes the main single-player experience and Undead Nightmare, subject to the edition and platform listing.
Start with Red Dead Redemption 2 if you always play stories chronologically
Choose this route when experiencing the timeline from earlier events to later events matters more than preserving the original release’s information flow. Remember that chronological order can reveal context that release order would have delayed; that is the principal trade-off.
Start with Bully if the setting matters more than franchise continuity
Bully is the simplest choice when you are interested in a school setting and a different tone. You can begin without GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Revolver, or any other Rockstar story. Choose the edition that matches your platform and verify current support details for that specific release.
Start with Red Dead Revolver only if you are exploring series history
There is no requirement to use it as a gateway to Red Dead Redemption. Play it first only because you specifically want to investigate the earlier title, not because later games depend on it for basic comprehension.
Common pitfalls when choosing an order
- Confusing a prequel with a prerequisite: A prequel supplies earlier events; it does not automatically mean the later game assumes you have played it.
- Assuming every Red Dead-branded game is one continuous required sequence: The cited guidance separates Red Dead Revolver from the requirement question and identifies Red Dead Redemption as standalone.
- Buying by title alone: Edition names and platform availability differ. Confirm whether the listing is Bully: Anniversary Edition, Bully: Scholarship Edition, or the current Red Dead Redemption package.
- Expecting a shared story between Bully and Red Dead: Rockstar’s separate support and title listings support treating them as independent choices.
- Ignoring spoiler preference: The choice between release and chronological order is mainly about when context is revealed, not whether either game can be understood.
A practical first-session plan
- Choose your setting: Select the western world of Red Dead Redemption or Red Dead Redemption 2, or the school setting of Bully.
- Choose your story order: For Red Dead, select release order (Red Dead Redemption, then Red Dead Redemption 2) or chronological order (Red Dead Redemption 2, then Red Dead Redemption).
- Check the exact edition: Confirm the title, platform, region, and current support listing before downloading or buying.
- Do not add prerequisite games unnecessarily: Begin the selected title directly. Add Red Dead Revolver later only if you want optional series history.
- Use the package contents intentionally: If you choose the current Red Dead Redemption release, note that its listing includes the complete single-player experiences of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare.
Bottom line
You do not need to play an earlier Rockstar game before Red Dead Redemption or Bully. For the Red Dead storyline, release order is the safer choice when you want to limit prequel-related spoilers, while chronological order is perfectly valid if you prefer the timeline. Red Dead Revolver is optional. Bully stands apart, so choose it directly if its school setting is what interests you.
