No. Resident Evil Requiem is designed to work as a starting point. Producer Masato Kumazawa says newcomers do not need knowledge of past games; the only background he identifies as necessary is that Leon was involved in the Raccoon City incident. Earlier entries are optional context, with Resident Evil 2 the most focused preparation for readers who want it.

The direct answer for new players

You can begin Resident Evil Requiem without completing any previous Resident Evil game. Capcom presents it as the ninth main installment, but its story introduces Grace Ashcroft as a new protagonist and gives the player a clear route into the setting. The returning character, Leon, provides continuity rather than a barrier to entry.

That distinction matters. A game can belong to a long-running storyline without requiring a player to know every earlier plot point. Requiem brings back the Raccoon City and Umbrella threads, yet the developers specifically planned its narrative so someone unfamiliar with the series can follow the events in the game itself.

If you are deciding whether to delay Requiem for a chronological marathon, there is no story requirement to do so. Choose an earlier game only if you want additional atmosphere, references, or emotional context.

What the producer says about prerequisites

The explicit newcomer guidance

In a developer interview, Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa gave an unusually clear answer: “You don’t need to know the past games to understand the story this time around. The only thing you need to know is that he was involved in the Raccoon City incident.” The pronoun refers to Leon.

This is stronger than a marketing suggestion that a game is “accessible.” It identifies the intended knowledge threshold. You do not need a timeline of bioterror incidents, a list of every returning character, or familiarity with the previous numbered entries to understand Requiem’s central story.

What that one piece of context means

Raccoon City is the major historical reference point. Kumazawa describes Requiem as a return to the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation. Leon’s connection to that incident explains why his history matters when he appears, but the statement does not require you to know every detail of his earlier appearances.

For a first-time player, the practical takeaway is simple: recognize Raccoon City as a defining event in Leon’s past. The game is expected to supply the immediate context needed for its own scenes.

Why Resident Evil 2 is the best optional primer

Resident Evil 2 is the most targeted choice if you want to play one earlier title before Requiem. The developers describe Requiem as Leon’s first return to Raccoon City since Resident Evil 2 and refer to the city as “the place where it all began.” That makes the second game the closest thematic preparation for Requiem’s setting and Leon-related continuity.

This is an editorial recommendation drawn from those developer comments, not a stated requirement. Playing Resident Evil 2 can give you a stronger sense of why the location carries weight and why Leon’s return is significant. It will not turn Requiem into a different game, and skipping it does not leave you unable to follow the new story.

What Resident Evil 2 adds

  • Familiarity with Raccoon City as the series’ foundational setting.
  • Additional context for Leon as a character before his Requiem role.
  • A useful reference point for the horror-focused side of the series.
  • More recognition of the narrative thread connected with Umbrella.

What it does not add

  • It is not a mandatory tutorial for Requiem’s controls or objectives.
  • It does not replace the new game’s introduction to Grace Ashcroft.
  • It is not evidence that every earlier mainline game must be completed first.

Do you need Resident Evil 4, 7, or Village first?

Game or group Required for Requiem? Why you might still play it How directly it prepares you
Resident Evil 2 No It is the most relevant optional setting and Leon primer because Requiem returns to Raccoon City. Highest among the optional choices
Resident Evil 4 No It provides context for Leon’s more action-oriented identity and is the gameplay reference cited for Leon’s Requiem sections. Useful for tone and mechanics, not prerequisite story
Resident Evil 7 No It begins the Winters family storyline and offers a different horror-focused experience. Limited direct setup for Requiem’s Raccoon City thread
Resident Evil Village No It continues the Winters family storyline introduced in Resident Evil 7. Limited direct setup for Requiem’s stated focus
Other earlier mainline entries No They broaden your understanding of the series’ connective throughline, recurring people, and Umbrella-related history. Broad lore enrichment rather than essential preparation

Resident Evil 4 is relevant to how Requiem plays rather than to a required plot handoff. The developers say Leon’s sections draw on the more action-oriented approach associated with Resident Evil 4, while Grace’s horror-focused sections are based on Resident Evil 2. That makes RE4 a sensible choice for players interested in Leon’s style, but not a prerequisite for understanding why he is in the story.

Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village are enjoyable entry points for the Winters family arc. The developers distinguish that arc from Requiem’s deliberate return to the Raccoon City narrative, so playing both is optional preparation rather than a recommended checklist.

Choose your preparation path by your goal

Path 1: Start Requiem immediately

  1. Begin Resident Evil Requiem without playing another title.
  2. Pay attention to the game’s introductions for Grace, Leon, and the current situation.
  3. Treat references to Raccoon City and Umbrella as historical context that the new narrative will frame for you.

This is the most efficient option and the one most directly supported by Kumazawa’s newcomer statement.

Path 2: Play one focused prequel

  1. Play Resident Evil 2 if you want the strongest connection to Requiem’s setting.
  2. Start Requiem after finishing it; do not add the rest of the series unless you want more lore.

This route maximizes relevant context without turning an optional introduction into a multi-game commitment.

Path 3: Learn the broad series history

  1. Work through earlier mainline games in the order that interests you.
  2. Use the games to understand how the series maintains a connective narrative while changing protagonists, locations, and styles.
  3. Play Requiem when you are ready, knowing that broader familiarity is enrichment rather than a condition of comprehension.

This is appropriate for lore-focused players, but it is not an efficient way to prepare solely for Requiem.

Path 4: Choose by gameplay taste

  • Pick Resident Evil 2 if you want a horror-focused introduction comparable to Grace’s side of Requiem.
  • Pick Resident Evil 4 if you prefer to sample the action-oriented approach associated with Leon’s sections.
  • Pick Resident Evil 7 or Village if your priority is the separate Winters family storyline.

These choices answer different questions. The “best” preparation depends on whether you value setting continuity, gameplay tone, or a broader tour of the franchise.

How Requiem uses its two protagonists

Grace Ashcroft is a new entry point

Kumazawa describes Grace as a new, relatable protagonist unlike previous leads such as Leon or Chris. Her introduction gives Requiem a character whose history is not assumed to be familiar. That design choice helps the game explain its immediate stakes through a viewpoint that newcomers can adopt.

Grace’s sections focus on horror, and the developers say her gameplay is based on Resident Evil 2. You can therefore approach her chapters as a new story with a recognizable survival-horror foundation rather than as a continuation that depends on memorizing earlier campaigns.

Leon supplies continuity

Leon and Grace share one unified story. Leon’s presence connects the new game to the franchise’s past, especially the Raccoon City thread, while Grace gives the narrative a fresh perspective. The two roles are complementary: one carries history into Requiem, and the other gives first-time players a character whose situation is introduced within this title.

Leon’s gameplay is described as more action-oriented and based on Resident Evil 4. You can appreciate that contrast without having played RE4, because the distinction concerns the feel of his sections rather than a required plot explanation.

Release, platforms, and what “mainline entry” means here

Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment. Its release date was February 27, 2026. Capcom’s original release notice listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC; a later Capcom sales announcement also listed Nintendo Switch 2. Check the platform and edition shown for your region before buying, because availability and edition names can differ.

The mainline designation explains why players ask about the earlier games: Requiem belongs to the numbered narrative lineage rather than being presented as an unrelated side story. It does not, however, change the developer’s stated accessibility. A ninth installment can preserve continuity while still introducing the immediate plot and characters needed for newcomers.

Capcom reported sales of “5 million units” as of March 4, 2026. That number is a Capcom company announcement, not an independent sales audit, so it should be read as the publisher’s reported figure.

Common mistakes when deciding what to play first

Mistake: assuming “connected” means “required”

Requiem is connected to earlier events through Raccoon City, Umbrella, and Leon. Connection gives returning fans extra recognition; it does not establish a prerequisite list. The producer’s direct statement settles the comprehension question.

Mistake: treating every returning character as homework

Recognizing a familiar face can improve the experience, but the game’s new protagonist and unified story are intended to orient players inside Requiem. Do not postpone the game merely because you cannot identify every reference in advance.

Mistake: choosing a game for the wrong reason

Resident Evil 2 is the strongest setting primer. Resident Evil 4 is the closer gameplay comparison for Leon. Resident Evil 7 and Village serve the Winters family arc. Selecting among them by purpose prevents unnecessary backtracking through the catalog.

Mistake: confusing lore completeness with basic understanding

A complete series playthrough can explain more of the franchise’s connective history, but “more context” is not the same as “needed to understand Requiem.” Decide whether you want a lore project or a direct route into the new game before committing to multiple titles.

Recommended decision

If Requiem is the game you want to play, start it. That choice follows the producer’s explicit guidance and avoids turning optional background into a barrier. If you want one earlier game first, choose Resident Evil 2 for its direct Raccoon City relevance. Add Resident Evil 4 only when Leon’s action-oriented gameplay interests you, and choose Resident Evil 7 or Village for the separate Winters storyline rather than as Requiem preparation.

Requiem’s structure is built to serve both audiences: longtime players get a return to a central setting and an ongoing Umbrella-related narrative, while newcomers receive Grace Ashcroft, a new unified story, and enough in-game framing to proceed without a completed franchise history.
