Usually, no. If the newest game is designed as a standalone entry, it should explain the character’s trauma, motives, and immediate stakes well enough for a first-time player. Earlier games can make a loss, betrayal, friendship, or redemption feel more personal, but that added emotional weight is different from information required to follow the current plot.
The exact answer depends on the unnamed franchise and character. Without those details, no earlier game can honestly be called essential. You can still determine whether you need one by separating three questions: can you follow what is happening, do you understand why the character acts this way, and would prior relationships make the scenes hit harder?
What “understand the backstory” actually means
Players often use “understand” to mean several different things. A game may give you enough facts to follow its story while leaving earlier events less emotionally powerful than they would be for a returning fan. Treat these as separate levels of understanding.
Basic plot comprehension
You have basic comprehension when you can identify the character’s present goal, the event that created the current conflict, the people or factions involved, and what is at risk if the character fails. A self-contained sequel should provide this information through dialogue, scenes, codex entries, environmental storytelling, or a recap.

Motivational clarity
Motivational clarity means you know why the character behaves as they do, not merely what they are doing. The current game does not need to recount every childhood event or previous mission, but it should explain the backstory elements that drive its own playable situation. Game-writing reference material from Chris Bateman describes backstory as the history that produces the situation the player is now playing, and recommends explaining the elements needed for the main story while avoiding exposition that does not advance it.
Emotional context
Emotional context comes from having spent time with the character and their earlier relationships. A reunion may feel warmer, a betrayal more painful, or a sacrifice more meaningful when you already know the people involved. This is a benefit of prior play, not proof that prior play is a prerequisite.
Why a later game should explain the essential trauma
A sequel can assume familiarity with a world’s broad history while still needing to communicate the information necessary for its own conflict. If the character’s tragic past is the reason for a major decision, the current game must give new players enough context to understand that decision. Otherwise, the player is being asked to react to a mystery that the game has not made legible.
Optional continuity and required exposition are different. A returning player may recognize a name, understand an old alliance, or notice an Easter egg that a newcomer misses. Those details can enrich the experience without changing the basic chain of cause and effect presented in the new entry.

When a game withholds the character’s motive entirely and offers no usable recap, that is a storytelling gap in the current game. It is not automatic evidence that every previous installment is mandatory. A player should not have to purchase several older games merely to learn why the current protagonist is grieving, angry, afraid, or determined.
What developers say about starting with a later entry

In an official Square Enix developer interview, producer Junichi Suzuki said there is “no need to play previous installments to jump into this game” and that it is designed to be enjoyed from scratch. He also noted that returning players can find details and Easter eggs that “aren’t central to the story.” That is a clear distinction between optional recognition and required narrative information: a newcomer should be able to follow the principal story, while a veteran may spot extra connections.
Dragon Age II
BioWare’s official recap makes the point even more directly: “You do not need to have played any previous Dragon Age games to understand and enjoy Dragon Age II and its story.” The same explanation says each episode stands alone while continuity and shared events provide additional context. In practical terms, a first-time player can understand the immediate character arcs; a returning player may attach more meaning to the political or personal consequences carried over from earlier games.

Executive producer Gary McKay describes The Veilguard as a new adventure with a new lead hero and companion cast. BioWare presents the series as a sequence of new conflicts and protagonists connected by a shared world. That structure favors entry at the current game: previous events may explain why the setting has reached its present condition, but the new protagonist’s goals and relationships are introduced for this adventure.

Remedy creative director Mikael Kasurinen has said, “We want every game to stand on [its] own two feet.” His description allows prior games to reward returning fans without making them required reading. For a character with a painful history, that generally means the new game should establish the facts needed for its own arc while allowing longtime players to feel more recognition and continuity.
A practical test for whether an earlier game is necessary
Use the following four tests before deciding whether to go back. They work even when you have only watched a trailer or read a short synopsis.

Three levels of prior knowledge
Earlier games are probably optional
- The opening chapters introduce the character’s history in plain language.
- The game explains the relationships that directly affect the new conflict.
- Dialogue makes clear what the character wants now and what they fear losing.
- References to old events function as flavor, callbacks, or Easter eggs rather than unexplained plot turns.
In this situation, start with the newest game. If a reference interests you, look up the older event after you understand its role in the present story; doing so avoids turning a minor callback into a barrier to entry.

A recap is the sensible middle option
- The current game assumes a shared world history but introduces a new lead or conflict.
- Several companions have established relationships with the returning character, yet the game supplies enough immediate explanation to continue.
- You care about the character’s emotional arc but have limited time or no convenient access to earlier entries.
A reliable story recap, official synopsis, or carefully selected long-form summary can provide names, causes, and consequences without requiring a complete playthrough. Prioritize the events that directly produce the character’s present situation; do not attempt to memorize every side quest.

An earlier game may be functionally essential
- The current title begins after a major event and gives no explanation of who caused it or why it matters.
- The character’s central motive is treated as known but never stated or shown.
- Most scenes depend on recognizing a relationship that the new game does not establish.
- The sequel’s ending resolves an old personal conflict rather than creating a new one.
Even here, “essential” means essential for your preferred level of comprehension, not necessarily a universal requirement. If a summary supplies the missing cause-and-effect chain, the original game may be emotionally preferable but practically optional.
How to check before you buy or start
- Identify the character’s role. Is the tragic figure the new protagonist, a returning companion, an antagonist, or a supporting character? A returning side character often receives less introductory material than a new lead.
- Read the official premise. Look for language such as “new adventure,” “new protagonist,” or “standalone story.” These descriptions are useful signals, although they do not replace the game’s actual exposition.
- Look for a recap feature. Check the title screen, an extras menu, an opening montage, or a publisher-provided story summary. A recap can indicate that the developers expect both newcomers and returning players.
- Check spoiler-safe impressions. Seek descriptions of whether the game explains the character’s motive, not plot summaries that reveal the tragedy itself.
- Choose the lowest-cost adequate context. If the new game explains the essentials, play it directly. If it assumes several major events, use a recap. Only play the older entry when you specifically want its scenes, mechanics, or emotional buildup.
What earlier games add that a recap cannot
A summary can tell you that two characters were close, that a decision caused a death, or that a faction betrayed the protagonist. It cannot fully reproduce the time you spent watching those relationships develop. Interactive participation also changes how responsibility feels: making a choice, surviving a fight, or returning to a familiar place can create attachment that a paragraph of explanation cannot duplicate.
Earlier games may also reveal consequences gradually. You might recognize a character’s coping habit, understand why a seemingly minor object matters, or notice that a later decision reverses an earlier one. These layers are meaningful rewards for returning players, but they are additive. The new game still has to communicate the stakes of the scenes it expects every player to understand.

If you understand the present goal but not the history
Continue until the game has introduced its first major explanation. Many stories withhold chronology for dramatic reasons but still provide enough information before a decision becomes important. If the character’s current objective is clear, you probably do not need to stop immediately.

If names and relationships are the problem
Use the in-game codex, journal, character menu, or recap option first. Write down only the relationships that affect the current mission. A short list of “ally,” “former ally,” “victim,” and “current threat” is often more useful than an exhaustive timeline.
If the motive never becomes clear
At that point, consult a spoiler-controlled summary of the relevant earlier entry. If the summary still cannot explain the current character arc, the problem may be incomplete exposition rather than your lack of preparation. You should not assume that buying every previous game will fix a gap the new game itself fails to bridge.
How to judge the emotional impact honestly
Ask what kind of experience you want. If your priority is understanding the plot and completing the new campaign, the current game’s explanations usually matter most. If your priority is maximum attachment to a long-running character, earlier play can be worthwhile even when optional. Neither choice is the “correct” way to be a fan.
There is also a spoiler trade-off. Reading a recap may reveal the very tragedy you hoped to discover naturally. Playing the earlier entry preserves its pacing but costs more time and may require an older platform. Decide whether surprise, efficiency, or emotional accumulation matters most to you before choosing a catch-up method.
Which earlier game is actually essential?
For this broad question, no single earlier game can be named. Essentiality is character- and franchise-specific. The relevant comparison is not “old game versus new game” in the abstract, but whether the new title supplies the causal information behind this particular character’s behavior.
Use this rule: an earlier game is essential only when the current game’s central character arc cannot be followed after you have used its own explanations and any available recap. If you can state what happened, why it changed the character, and what the character is trying to do now, prior play is enhancement rather than a requirement.
Bottom line for first-time players
Start with the newest game when it introduces its own protagonist, conflict, and character motive. Expect returning players to notice more continuity, callbacks, and emotional history, but do not confuse those rewards with mandatory knowledge. If the game leaves a core motive unexplained, use a focused recap and treat the omission as a limitation of the current storytelling, not automatic proof that the entire back catalog must be played.
