No. There is no stated Rockstar or Take-Two requirement to complete Grand Theft Auto V before starting Grand Theft Auto VI. GTA VI has its own published setup, centered on Jason and Lucia in the state of Leonida. Playing GTA V first is an optional way to revisit the series, not a documented prerequisite.

Rockstar’s official synopsis starts the new game with Jason and Lucia. It says:

This is a self-contained premise: two protagonists, a failed job, and a conspiracy spanning Leonida. Nothing in that synopsis tells players to know GTA V’s campaign, characters, missions, or ending before they begin. It also does not establish whether the new story will contain callbacks that longtime players notice.
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. That description indicates a campaign designed to be played by an individual, but it does not by itself answer every question about chronology or references to earlier games.

What is still unknown about the connection to GTA V?
The available official pages do not settle several continuity questions. They do not confirm whether GTA V characters return, whether particular locations or events are mentioned, or whether knowing the previous game adds context to any mission. They also do not publish a recommended play order.
That uncertainty matters because “not required” and “not connected” are different claims. GTA VI can provide a complete entry point while still rewarding fans who recognize an older character, place, or reference. If your goal is to follow Jason and Lucia’s story, waiting for GTA VI is reasonable. The published synopsis supplies the basic premise, and no official page currently instructs new players to complete an earlier campaign. Avoid treating fan theories about returning characters or plot links as preparation requirements.
What happens if you start GTA VI without GTA V?
Based on the published information, you should expect to begin GTA VI with its own protagonists and setup rather than with an imported GTA V save. No official announcement reviewed for this question describes a save-transfer requirement, a campaign unlock tied to GTA V, or a quiz about the previous game.
The exact onboarding sequence, tutorial design, and any explanations of the wider GTA universe have not been fully documented in the cited material. What happens if you finish GTA V first?

That means a physical-looking package still requires an internet connection and enough console storage to download the game. Confirm that your console is a supported PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S model and that you can redeem the code in the correct account region.

“GTA VI has no connection to GTA V”
That is also too strong. The published information does not confirm the presence or absence of returning characters, references, or plot links. The defensible conclusion is that GTA V completion has not been stated as a requirement.
“The GTA V ending is required background”
There is no official prerequisite list that identifies the ending—or any other mission—as required knowledge. You may choose to play it for context, but label that as a personal preference.
“A physical GTA VI copy includes a disc”
