No—provided you already have an Eternal character. Diablo 4 Season 15, Season of Hell’s Legacy, adds Rebirth. Rebirth converts an existing Eternal hero into a Seasonal character and resets that hero to level 1, so you can play the season without making an additional character.
If you are starting Diablo IV with no existing hero, you still create a character and choose the Seasonal Realm during character creation. If you want to preserve an existing hero exactly as it is on the Eternal Realm, leave that character alone and use another hero for Seasonal play.

Which character option fits your situation?
| Your situation | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| You already have an Eternal character and want to play Season 15 | Use Rebirth on that Eternal character | The hero becomes Seasonal and returns to level 1 |
| You already have an Eternal character but want it unchanged | Leave it on the Eternal Realm and use another hero for the season | The original hero remains an Eternal character |
| You have never created a Diablo IV character | Create a character and select the Seasonal Realm | You begin Season 15 with a new level 1 hero |
| The season reaches its transition | Allow the Seasonal character to transfer normally | The character and its seasonal progression move to the Eternal Realm |
Blizzard describes the feature this way in its official Season 15 announcement: Instead of having to create a new character at the start of each season, you’ll be able to select an Eternal character to continue their adventures in the Seasonal realm.
That is the key change for Season 15: creating a separate hero is optional for players who already have an Eternal character, not a requirement.
What Rebirth does in Season 15
It converts an Eternal hero instead of cloning one
Rebirth takes the Eternal character you select and changes that character’s realm status to Seasonal. You are not creating a second copy with a different name. The converted hero keeps its existing class, name, and appearance, then enters the season’s level-one progression. This is useful when you want to continue using a familiar character identity while taking part in seasonal progression.

It always resets the character to level 1
The reset is fundamental to the feature. A reborn character does not carry its previous level into Season 15; it starts at level 1. Rebirth therefore preserves the hero’s identity, not its current level or completed leveling journey. Expect to level that character through the seasonal progression path from the beginning.
It preserves the Normal or Hardcore state
Rebirth keeps whether the hero is a Normal character or a Hardcore character. Choosing Rebirth does not change that state. A Hardcore hero remains Hardcore after conversion, so select a character only if you intend to continue under the same risk rules.
What happens to equipment and inventory?
Empty the hero before you start
Move every item out of the character’s equipment slots and personal inventory before selecting Rebirth. Put anything you want to retain into the Eternal stash. Blizzard’s Rebirth rules state that a character cannot be reborn while it has equipment or items in its personal inventory.
Items left on the character are not protected
Items retained on the hero are lost when Rebirth is completed. This includes both gear currently equipped and items sitting in the personal inventory. The stash step is therefore a safety requirement, not merely an organizational suggestion: inspect every equipment slot and the complete personal inventory, move the contents to the Eternal stash, and only then proceed.
Why the stash step matters for your decision
Rebirth changes the character you selected, so any gear you leave on that character is exposed to the conversion rule. If you want to preserve an item for an Eternal build, store it before converting. If you are unsure whether an item matters, treat it as something to keep and place it in the stash rather than risk losing it.

What is retained and what is reset?
The following comparison separates the hero’s identity from its seasonal progression:
| Character element | Effect of Rebirth |
|---|---|
| Class | Retained |
| Name | Retained |
| Appearance | Retained |
| Normal or Hardcore state | Retained |
| Level | Reset to level 1 |
| Equipment and personal-inventory items left on the hero | Lost; those items also prevent Rebirth until removed |
| Eligible cosmetic settings from an ensemble | Can transfer, including listed transmogs, pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals, and headstones |
Cosmetic ensemble transfer
If the character is saved in an ensemble, cosmetic preferences can transfer with the reborn hero. Blizzard specifically lists transmogs, pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals, and headstones among the cosmetic settings that may carry over. “Can transfer” is important: these are eligible cosmetic preferences, while the level reset and inventory rule still apply.

Think of Rebirth as keeping the presentation of your hero while restarting its seasonal journey. You can retain the class, name, appearance, and Normal/Hardcore designation, but you do not bypass the level-one start. Your choice is therefore about which character identity you want to take into the season, not about preserving an already-leveled seasonal power state.
How to use Rebirth safely
- Choose the Eternal character you want to convert. Select an existing Eternal hero whose class, name, appearance, and Normal/Hardcore state you want to carry into Season 15.
- Check every equipment slot. Remove all equipped gear from the character.
- Check the entire personal inventory. Move every item out, including items that are easy to overlook in additional inventory sections.
- Store the items in the Eternal stash. Do not leave anything you want to keep on the character itself.
- Select Rebirth. The game converts the emptied Eternal character to the Seasonal Realm and resets it to level 1.
- Confirm the starting state. Verify that you selected the intended hero and understand that the seasonal journey begins at level 1 before continuing.
There is no need to make a second character when this process suits you. Rebirth is the route for carrying one existing hero’s identity into the season while accepting a fresh level-one progression.
Should you rebirth your main Eternal character?
Use Rebirth when identity matters more than keeping the current hero untouched
Rebirth is a good fit if you want your established class, name, and appearance in Season 15 and you accept starting over at level 1. It avoids creating an additional hero while giving that character access to seasonal progression. Emptying the character first protects the items you want to keep on the Eternal side.

Keep the hero on Eternal when you still want to play it there
Do not rebirth a character that you want available in its current Eternal state. Rebirth changes that selected hero into a Seasonal character and resets its level. To preserve uninterrupted access to the original Eternal version, leave it untouched and choose a different character for Seasonal play.
Use a different existing character when you want both realms available
If you have multiple Eternal heroes, you can keep one unchanged for Eternal activities and rebirth another for Season 15. This gives you a clear separation between the character whose current state you are preserving and the character whose progression you are restarting.
What should a first-time player do?
A player with no existing Diablo IV character cannot use Rebirth because there is no Eternal hero to convert. Start the normal character-creation process, choose the class and appearance you want, and select the Seasonal Realm. That creates a level-one Seasonal character directly.
The first-time path and the Rebirth path meet at the same practical starting point: Season 15 gameplay begins with a level-one Seasonal hero. The difference is whether that hero is newly created or converted from an existing Eternal character whose identity is retained.

Seasonal characters and their progression move to the Eternal Realm at the seasonal transition. The character does not remain a permanently separate Seasonal character after the season closes. Seasonal-only activities and rules also do not continue as active Seasonal content after that transition.

This timing affects how you plan your roster. Rebirth is a seasonal entry method, not a permanent replacement for the Eternal Realm. When the season ends, the converted hero returns to Eternal alongside its seasonal progression, while the seasonal rules and activities end as Seasonal features.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: assuming Rebirth preserves your level
It does not. The converted hero is level 1. Decide based on whether you are willing to repeat the leveling progression, rather than expecting an already-leveled Eternal character to remain at its current level.
Mistake: leaving gear equipped
Equipment on the character blocks Rebirth, and items left there are lost when the conversion occurs. Remove gear from every slot and place it in the Eternal stash before trying again.
Mistake: forgetting personal-inventory items
The restriction covers the personal inventory as well as equipment. Inspect the entire inventory, not just the first visible group of slots, and move all items to the stash.
Mistake: rebirthing the only copy of a character you wanted to keep unchanged
Rebirth converts the selected Eternal hero. If you want that exact hero to remain available in its current Eternal state, do not select it. Use another character or create a separate one for seasonal play.
Mistake: expecting seasonal rules to continue forever
Seasonal progression transfers to Eternal when the season transitions, but Seasonal-only activities and rules do not remain active as Seasonal content. Treat the season as a distinct progression period with a defined end.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- You already have an Eternal character: Rebirth lets you enter Season 15 without creating an additional hero.

- You want eligible cosmetic ensemble settings: listed transmogs, pigments, mounts and accessories, pets, portals, and headstones can transfer.
- You have no existing character: create one and select the Seasonal Realm.
- You want the original Eternal hero untouched: leave it on Eternal and use another hero for Seasonal play.
