Usually, no. You should not change firmware settings merely because a PC seems slow to start. For security, check whether UEFI Secure Boot is supported and enabled. For speed, distinguish Windows Fast Startup from a motherboard’s firmware Fast Boot option; neither is a universal fix, and no particular time saving can be promised across different PCs. Before changing boot order, boot mode, TPM, Secure Boot, or another measured-boot setting, make sure you can retrieve your BitLocker recovery key and have the computer maker’s instructions for your exact model.

BIOS and UEFI are not the same as Windows startup settings

People often call all pre-Windows firmware menus “the BIOS,” but most current PCs use UEFI firmware. The firmware initializes hardware and selects the software that will start the operating system. Windows then takes over, and its own startup features operate separately.

That distinction matters because a setting with a familiar name can have a completely different purpose from a Windows feature. A vendor may label a firmware option Fast Boot, while Windows has a feature called Fast Startup. They are not interchangeable, and changing one does not automatically change the other.

Choose the setting by your actual goal

Goal Feature to examine What it does What is not established Main caution
Protect the startup chain UEFI Secure Boot UEFI checks signatures on boot software and allows trusted software to start. It is not a general-purpose speed switch. Compatibility depends on UEFI mode, installed operating systems, and the device firmware.
Reduce firmware time Manufacturer’s firmware Fast Boot option A model-specific firmware choice that can alter pre-Windows initialization. No reliable number of seconds can be promised for an individual PC. Menu names, behavior, and side effects vary by model.
Resume Windows more quickly Windows Fast Startup Uses hibernation infrastructure to save and restore system state. It is not the same mechanism as firmware Fast Boot. Changing a firmware setting will not substitute for configuring Windows.

Microsoft describes Secure Boot as protection for the startup process and lists faster boot and resume among the potential benefits of UEFI platforms. Those statements do not provide a benchmark for your particular computer. A firmware menu can save little time, make a larger difference on another model, or have no noticeable effect when Windows or hardware initialization is the real delay.

When Secure Boot is the right change

What Secure Boot protects

Secure Boot is a security control in UEFI firmware. During startup, the firmware verifies signatures on boot software and permits trusted software to run. This helps defend the early startup chain against unauthorized or altered boot components before Windows loads.

That makes Secure Boot relevant when your concern is whether startup software can be replaced or tampered with. It does not speed up every PC, clean up a slow Windows installation, or replace antivirus and operating-system security updates.

Check compatibility before enabling it

Do not tell every PC owner to toggle Secure Boot immediately. Its behavior depends on the current boot mode, the operating systems installed, and the firmware implementation. A Windows-only computer configured for modern UEFI is a different case from a dual-boot machine, a system using older boot software, or a customized installation.

  • Confirm that the computer is using UEFI in the configuration expected by its operating system.
  • Identify every operating system and boot manager on the disk, especially on a dual-boot system.
  • Read the support instructions for the exact PC or motherboard model before changing Secure Boot or switching between UEFI and a legacy mode.
  • Plan how you will undo the change if the system no longer finds a bootable operating system.

If the manufacturer documents Secure Boot as supported for your configuration and Windows reports it as disabled, enabling it may improve startup security. If the documentation warns of an incompatibility, follow that guidance instead of forcing the setting.

Why a firmware Fast Boot setting may not make your PC faster

What the option usually controls

A firmware Fast Boot option is a vendor-specific choice made before Windows starts. The exact label and behavior differ among systems. It may change which hardware checks or initialization tasks occur during a normal boot, but the available evidence does not establish a universal implementation or a guaranteed saving.

There is no defensible “typical” number of seconds to promise. The result depends on the firmware version, attached devices, storage, graphics hardware, USB equipment, network adapters, and the amount of time Windows itself needs after firmware hands over control.

When changing it is reasonable

Consider the option only after you have identified that the delay occurs before Windows appears and the model’s documentation describes the setting. Record the original value first. If the computer is used for troubleshooting, hardware testing, or frequent firmware access, a faster path that skips initialization can be inconvenient because it may reduce the time available to enter setup or detect a removable boot device.

Change one firmware option at a time, test several ordinary cold starts, and keep a written record of the original configuration. If the startup sequence becomes unreliable, restore that value rather than changing several unrelated settings at once.

Windows Fast Startup is a separate feature

Windows Fast Startup uses hibernation infrastructure: Windows saves part of the system state when you shut down and restores it during the next start. A firmware option labelled Fast Boot operates before Windows and is controlled by UEFI. Similar names do not mean the features share a switch, a mechanism, or a predictable result.

If your delay happens after the Windows logo, changing a firmware Fast Boot setting is unlikely to address the cause. Investigate Windows startup programs, updates, drivers, and device errors through normal operating-system support procedures instead. If you are evaluating Windows Fast Startup, use Windows’ own power settings and understand that a restart is not identical to a hybrid shutdown.

How to enter UEFI without guessing a key

There is no single entry key or universal menu path that applies to every PC. The manufacturer may use different keys, timing, or a dedicated recovery button. Microsoft provides a route through Windows Recovery on supported systems, while the device maker’s manual remains the authority for model-specific names and prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save your work and open Windows Settings.
  2. Open the recovery controls for your Windows edition. In current Windows interfaces this is generally under System and Recovery.
  3. Under advanced startup, choose Restart now. Windows will reboot into its recovery environment.
  4. Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, and choose UEFI Firmware Settings if that option is offered.
  5. Select Restart. The firmware setup screen should open; labels and locations inside it will vary by model.

If UEFI Firmware Settings is absent, do not infer that a random key press is safe or that the PC lacks UEFI. Consult the computer or motherboard documentation for its supported entry method. A firmware update may also be required when the manufacturer documents a limitation.

Prepare for BitLocker recovery before changing boot settings

BitLocker can treat a changed boot order, boot mode, Secure Boot state, TPM configuration, or related firmware measurement as a security change. The next startup may therefore request the BitLocker recovery key even when the change was intentional.

Pre-change checklist

  • Determine whether the Windows drive is encrypted with BitLocker or an organization-managed equivalent.
  • Locate and safely store the complete recovery key before entering firmware setup. Use the recovery-key location documented for your Windows account or organization; do not rely on memory or on a key stored only on the encrypted drive.
  • Make sure you know which disk and operating-system entry should remain first in the boot order.
  • Keep the manufacturer’s recovery and firmware instructions available on another device.
  • Record current values for Secure Boot, boot mode, boot order, TPM-related options, and any Fast Boot setting you intend to touch.

If a recovery prompt appears after the change, enter the matching key rather than repeatedly rebooting or clearing the TPM. If you cannot retrieve the key, stop before making the change; a firmware experiment is not worth risking access to the encrypted data.

A safe decision process for common situations

You want stronger startup security

  1. Check whether the PC supports UEFI Secure Boot and identify the current boot mode.
  2. Review the model-specific instructions and any operating-system requirements, including dual-boot considerations.
  3. Back up or retrieve the BitLocker recovery key.
  4. Enter UEFI through Windows Recovery or the documented manufacturer method.
  5. Change only Secure Boot, save, and verify that Windows and any other intended operating system still start.

If the system fails to boot, return to firmware and restore the documented previous state. Do not switch several boot-related options at once, because that makes the cause harder to identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want a shorter startup time

  1. Observe where the delay occurs: before the manufacturer logo, between firmware and the Windows logo, or after Windows begins loading.
  2. For a pre-Windows delay, read the exact model’s description of its Fast Boot option and note what hardware access it may limit.
  3. For a post-logo delay, investigate Windows rather than assuming a BIOS change will help.
  4. Record the existing firmware value and change only that option.
  5. Test normal cold starts and confirm that you can still enter firmware setup and boot the intended disk.

Keep the setting only if it solves the observed problem without creating a recovery, device-detection, or troubleshooting problem. The available Microsoft material does not quantify a guaranteed saving for any individual firmware switch.

Firmware servicing and the 2026 Secure Boot certificate transition

Secure Boot is not a one-time setting that can be ignored indefinitely. Microsoft says certificates originally issued in 2011 begin expiring in June 2026. Supported Windows versions receive relevant updates automatically, but the complete process can depend on firmware support and the PC maker’s implementation.

Use current Windows and manufacturer instructions for this transition. Do not manually replace Secure Boot keys simply because you saw an expiry date, and do not install firmware from an unrelated model. If Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a firmware limitation, obtain the required update from the PC or motherboard manufacturer before attempting further changes.

Special cases that need extra caution

Dual-boot systems

Changing between UEFI and a legacy boot mode, or changing which boot manager is trusted, can make one operating system disappear from the boot menu even though its files remain on the disk. Identify how each system was installed and follow both the operating-system and hardware documentation before changing Secure Boot or boot mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customized or recovery-sensitive PCs

Systems with custom boot loaders, unusual storage controllers, enterprise policies, or manufacturer recovery partitions may rely on firmware values that are not obvious from their names. Export or record the configuration where the documentation permits it, and make sure recovery media and encryption keys are available before experimenting.

Firmware updates

A firmware update is a separate operation from toggling a setting. Use only the instructions and files supplied for the exact computer or motherboard model, keep external power connected as directed, and do not interrupt the update. If the goal is Secure Boot certificate servicing, follow the current vendor procedure rather than treating a generic BIOS reset as a solution.

What to do when startup breaks after a change

  • BitLocker recovery screen: enter the saved recovery key that matches the Windows installation, then review the firmware change before the next restart.
  • No operating system found: return to UEFI and restore the original boot mode and boot-disk order documented in your notes.
  • Windows starts but another operating system is missing: stop changing settings and consult the dual-boot documentation; the trusted boot configuration may no longer match that installation.
  • Cannot open firmware setup: use Windows Recovery again if available, or follow the model’s documented entry method rather than trying random keys.
  • Devices disappear after enabling Fast Boot: restore the previous Fast Boot value and check the manufacturer’s explanation of skipped initialization.

If restoring the recorded values does not recover the system, use the manufacturer’s support process. Avoid clearing TPM data or deleting Secure Boot keys as a first response; those actions can create additional recovery work.

Bottom line

Change BIOS/UEFI settings only for a defined reason. Secure Boot is worth evaluating for startup security when your PC, boot mode, and operating systems support it. A firmware Fast Boot option may or may not reduce pre-Windows time, and no universal saving is established. Windows Fast Startup is a different feature. In every case, use model-specific instructions, change one setting at a time, and secure your BitLocker recovery key before touching boot configuration.
