Yes. The new DMZ is part of the paid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 base game, so you must purchase Modern Warfare 4 to enter DMZ. The Standard Edition is sufficient; the Vault Edition adds premium content and a deployment bonus but does not unlock a different version of DMZ.
Digital preorders receive DMZ Early Access on October 20, 2026. The worldwide launch is October 23, 2026. You also need a continuous internet connection, and console players need the applicable online-service subscription.
Why a purchase is required
Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release rather than a free update to an earlier Call of Duty title. Activision’s October 2026 launch information says the game must be purchased separately and that the full base game contains DMZ. In practical terms, the DMZ download or menu does not provide a free entry route by itself: the entitlement comes from owning Modern Warfare 4.

Activision also states that Modern Warfare 4 will not be included with Game Pass at launch. The announced plan is to add it in Holiday 2027, so a current Game Pass subscription does not replace the purchase requirement for the October 2026 launch period.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What “buying Modern Warfare 4” means
- Buying the Standard Edition grants the base game and DMZ access.
- Buying the Vault Edition grants the same base-game DMZ access plus listed cosmetic, seasonal and inventory-related bonuses.
- A preorder or prepurchase of either digital edition grants the announced DMZ Early Access period.
There is no evidence of a separate DMZ-only license in the launch information. If a store lists DMZ as a mode inside Modern Warfare 4, the required entitlement is the Modern Warfare 4 game purchase.
Standard versus Vault Edition
Both editions contain DMZ. Choose between them based on the extra content, not on access to the mode itself.
| Edition | DMZ access | Included extras | US PlayStation price shown October 18, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Yes; includes the full base game | Preorder bonuses where applicable | $69.99 |
| Vault Edition | Yes; includes the full base game | Hostile Alliance Operator Pack; Special Forces Operator Pack; Signature Weapon Collection; one season of BlackCell; DMZ Deployment Bonus | $99.99 |
The prices above are an example from the US PlayStation listing checked on October 18, 2026. Storefront pricing, taxes, currency conversion and regional editions can differ, and prices can change after that date.

The Vault-only deployment package is a set of starting inventory and recovery advantages. It includes:
- One additional Active Duty slot
- Two Weapon Insurance Contracts
- Two Operator Rescue Beacons
- Two Fulton Drop Markers
- Two Medium Backpacks
- Two 2-Plate Carriers
These items are bonuses rather than entry requirements. A Standard Edition owner can play DMZ without them. The Vault Edition is therefore aimed at players who specifically want the extra operators, the Signature Weapon Collection, a season of BlackCell, or the additional deployment resources.

Early Access and worldwide launch dates
| Date | Availability | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| October 20, 2026 | DMZ Early Access begins | Players who digitally preorder or prepurchase any edition |
| October 23, 2026 | Worldwide launch | Players with the required Modern Warfare 4 entitlement |
The dates are the announced schedule, not a guarantee that every player will see the mode at the same minute. Regional release windows, platform rollout procedures, service outages and time-zone differences can affect when the download or mode becomes available. If you preorder digitally, install the available game files and check the in-game mode list after the Early Access window opens.
Technical and service requirements
Continuous internet connection
Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming. Activision Support says this means a continuous internet connection is required for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ. DMZ should therefore be treated as an online-only mode rather than a mode that can be launched offline after installation.
A brief connection interruption can prevent matchmaking, interrupt a deployment or return you to the title screen. For the most reliable session, use a stable wired or strong wireless connection, avoid large downloads on the same network, and allow the game to finish any texture or content updates before entering a match.
Console online subscriptions
Console online modes require the platform’s applicable subscription:
- PlayStation consoles: the applicable PlayStation Plus plan.
- Xbox consoles: the applicable Game Pass Essential plan.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo Switch Online.
These subscriptions are separate from the Modern Warfare 4 purchase. Owning the game does not by itself supply the console service needed for online play. Subscription names, tiers and platform policies can change, so confirm the current requirement on your console store before checkout.

Phone verification and PC security
Activision says a linked mobile phone number may be required. If the account setup requests one, complete the linking process before attempting to join DMZ; the requirement can be applied as an account or security check rather than as part of the game purchase.
On PC, the stated security requirements include TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. A computer can meet the game’s general hardware needs and still fail the security check if either setting is disabled in firmware. If the launcher reports a TPM or Secure Boot problem, consult your motherboard or PC manufacturer’s instructions for enabling those features; do not change firmware settings without understanding the recovery implications for your system.
Where Modern Warfare 4 is available
Activision lists the following purchase platforms:
- Xbox Series X|S
- Xbox on PC
- PlayStation 5
- Battle.net
- Steam
- Nintendo Switch 2
Availability can vary by region and storefront. The Nintendo Switch 2 listing is specifically identified by Activision; this does not imply that older Switch hardware is supported.
Xbox Play Anywhere
When Modern Warfare 4 is purchased through the Xbox/Microsoft ecosystem, Xbox Play Anywhere can provide access on both a compatible Xbox console and PC. This is an entitlement feature tied to that purchase route, not a statement that every PC storefront purchase supplies a console copy. If you want to use both Xbox and PC, check that the store page identifies the Play Anywhere entitlement before buying.
Separate PC storefronts
Battle.net and Steam are listed as PC purchase options. A purchase made on one PC storefront should be treated as that storefront’s entitlement unless the store explicitly states otherwise. Sign in with the Activision account requested by the game and keep your platform account details available when troubleshooting ownership or progression.

Does Game Pass include DMZ?
Not at the October 2026 launch. Activision’s statement is that Modern Warfare 4 must be purchased separately to play at launch and will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. That planned window is later than the October 20 Early Access date and the October 23 worldwide launch.
This distinction matters if you already subscribe to Game Pass: the subscription can coexist with a separately purchased copy, but it is not the launch entitlement for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. Recheck the Xbox store and Activision’s service information if you are reading this after the planned Holiday 2027 window, because catalog availability is subject to change.
How to get into DMZ after buying the game
- Select an edition. Choose Standard if DMZ access is your only requirement. Choose Vault only if its listed operators, BlackCell season, weapon collection or deployment bonus justify the additional cost.
- Use a supported storefront. Buy through PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo Switch 2, subject to regional availability.
- Complete the platform transaction. Digital preorders of either edition qualify for Early Access beginning October 20, 2026.
- Install Modern Warfare 4 and its updates. DMZ is part of the base game, so install the current game files rather than looking for a separate free DMZ license.
- Sign in to the required accounts. Use the platform account associated with the purchase and complete any Activision account or linked-phone request.
- Meet online requirements. Connect to the internet continuously. On console, maintain the applicable PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
- Check the release window. During Early Access, look for DMZ from October 20. If you did not preorder, use the worldwide launch date of October 23 as the baseline.
Access problems and practical fixes
The store says you do not own DMZ
First verify that the transaction was for Modern Warfare 4 Standard or Vault Edition, not an add-on or cosmetic pack. Then launch from the same platform account that completed the purchase, allow the store to refresh the license, and install pending game updates. If the purchase is valid but the mode remains locked, contact the platform store or Activision Support with the transaction receipt.
Early Access is not visible on October 20
Early Access applies to digital preorders or prepurchases of any edition. Confirm that the order was completed digitally and that the platform’s release time has arrived in your region. A service outage, time-zone difference or delayed platform deployment can postpone visibility even when the entitlement is correct.

- Confirm that the console or PC is online and that the game can reach the service.
- Check whether the console online subscription is active.
- Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity while texture streaming is in use.
- Restart the game after an update or service interruption.
- On PC, check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot if a security message appears.
- Complete a linked mobile-phone verification if the account prompt requires it.
You bought on the wrong platform
Platform entitlements are not automatically interchangeable. If you intended to play on both Xbox and PC, the Xbox/Microsoft purchase route with Xbox Play Anywhere is the specifically identified option. Otherwise, verify the storefront and hardware listed on the order before requesting support or a refund under that store’s policy.

Is Vault worth buying for DMZ?
For access alone, no. Standard and Vault both include the same DMZ mode, so Standard is the lower-cost route for a player who wants to deploy, complete objectives and use the base game.
Vault becomes a preference decision. Consider it when you value all or several of the following:
- Hostile Alliance Operator Pack
- Special Forces Operator Pack
- Signature Weapon Collection
- One season of BlackCell
- An extra Active Duty slot
- Two Weapon Insurance Contracts
- Two Operator Rescue Beacons
- Two Fulton Drop Markers
- Two Medium Backpacks
- Two 2-Plate Carriers
If those extras do not matter to you, paying the Vault premium does not provide an additional DMZ access tier.

Call of Duty and Activision describe Modern Warfare 4 as having sixteen campaign missions in an October 16, 2026 official blog. That figure describes the campaign’s scope; it does not affect DMZ eligibility, the edition you need, the console subscription requirement or the Early Access schedule.
