Usually, no. If you own any eligible PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar announced a no-cost upgrade to the PS5 version beginning June 18, 2026. If you do not own GTAV, you can buy the PS5-only GTA Online standalone edition without Story Mode. Buy the full GTAV PS5 edition only if you also want Story Mode or its current bundle price is better value.
Whichever purchase you use, online multiplayer on PS5 requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Your GTA Online characters and progression can be migrated once from the previous version, and Rockstar also supports a one-time migration of GTAV Story Mode progress.
The three ways to play GTA Online on PS5
Your best route depends on what you already own and whether you want Story Mode. The PS5 storefront treats GTA Online and the complete GTAV package as separate products, while owners of a PS4 entitlement have a free upgrade path announced by Rockstar.

The upgrade and catalog rules are different from buying a new copy. A PS4 license can unlock the PS5 version, while PlayStation Plus Extra provides subscription-based access only while the game remains in the catalog and your membership is valid.

What the GTA Online standalone edition includes
Online multiplayer without Story Mode
The PS5 standalone listing says it includes Grand Theft Auto Online and that “GTAV: Story Mode can be purchased separately.” That is the correct product when your goal is to play the persistent online world and you do not need the single-player campaign.
Buying standalone Online does not mean you receive the campaign automatically. Story Mode is a separate entitlement, so it appears as an additional purchase if you later decide you want it. Conversely, you do not need to buy Story Mode merely to enter GTA Online on PS5.
Observed US price
On October 18, 2026, the US PlayStation Store showed GTA Online standalone for PS5 at $19.99. This is an observed storefront price, not a permanent worldwide price. Your region, taxes, currency, promotions and account storefront can produce a different amount.
What the full GTAV PS5 edition includes
Both modes in one entitlement
Rockstar’s edition comparison identifies the full GTAV edition as including both GTAV: Story Mode and GTA Online. Choose it if you want the campaign, intend to play both modes, or find a bundle discount that makes the difference smaller than buying Online and Story Mode separately.
Observed US promotion
The US PlayStation page observed on October 18, 2026 showed a limited GTAV bundle offer at $24.99, reduced from an original price of $49.99, with the offer scheduled to end October 22, 2026. The end date and amount are promotion-specific. A later visit may show the regular price or a different sale, and the offer may not appear in another country.

Because a sale can make the full edition only a few dollars more than standalone Online, check both product pages before purchasing. Do not assume that the standalone product is always the cheapest way to obtain both modes.

What Rockstar announced
In a June 17, 2026 Newswire announcement, Rockstar stated: “Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost.” For PS5 owners, the relevant date is June 18, 2026, when that announced upgrade became available.
The wording covers any PS4 version, so a PS4 GTAV entitlement is the first thing to check before spending money on a new PS5 purchase. The upgrade is tied to the account or entitlement that owns the game; signing in with a different PlayStation account can make the offer appear unavailable.
How to check and claim it
- On your PS5, sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased or owns the PS4 version of GTAV.
- Open the PlayStation Store and search for Grand Theft Auto V or GTA Online.
- Open the product page and inspect the edition selector or version list for the PS5 version.
- Select the PS5 edition that is marked as available through your existing entitlement rather than selecting a paid standalone product by mistake.
- Choose download or add to library, then confirm that the PS5 version—not only the PS4 version—is installed.
If the store still shows a price, verify the account, check your purchase history and look for a separate PS5 version selector. Do not buy again until you have confirmed that the PS4 license is attached to the account currently signed in. Store interfaces and labels can differ by country and by whether the original copy was digital or disc-based.
Can you play GTA Online on PS5 without buying Story Mode?
Yes. The PS5 GTA Online standalone edition is designed for that use. It contains the online component, while the listing identifies Story Mode as a separate purchase. You therefore have two legitimate ways to play Online:

- Claim the no-cost PS5 upgrade if you already own an eligible PS4 GTAV version.
- Buy the GTA Online standalone PS5 edition if you do not own GTAV and do not want the campaign.
The full GTAV edition is necessary only when you want Story Mode included in the same purchase, not as a technical prerequisite for multiplayer.

Do you need PlayStation Plus?
Yes, for online multiplayer. PlayStation’s launch guidance states: “PlayStation Plus required to play (recurring fees apply).” Owning GTAV, owning standalone GTA Online or claiming the free PS4-to-PS5 upgrade does not replace that subscription requirement.
The requirement applies to entering GTA Online’s multiplayer services on PS5. It is separate from the game license: you can own the software and still be unable to use online multiplayer if the account lacks the required active PlayStation Plus membership.
PlayStation Plus Extra catalog access
The live US PlayStation page labels GTAV as included with PlayStation Plus Extra. Catalog access is not the same as permanent ownership. The title can leave the catalog, and catalog availability, terms and pricing can differ by region, so verify the listing in your own storefront before relying on Extra instead of purchasing a copy.
Even when GTAV is available through Extra, the multiplayer requirement remains relevant. A catalog subscription supplies access to the game while eligible; it does not turn PlayStation Plus into a permanent license or remove the recurring-fee condition for online play.

What happens to your GTA Online character and progress?
One-time migration to PS5
Rockstar says current players can transfer GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 through a one-time migration. The PlayStation standalone listing also describes one-time migration of GTA Online characters and progression. This lets an existing player continue on PS5 without treating the new console as an entirely new online identity.
Because the migration is one-time, choose the account and destination carefully. Make sure you are using the same Rockstar and PlayStation identities associated with the previous character before confirming the transfer. A migration is not the same as repeatedly synchronizing two separate versions.
Story Mode progress
Rockstar’s current-player guidance also supports a one-time transfer of GTAV Story Mode progress to PS5. That process is separate from GTA Online character migration, so campaign saves and online characters should be considered two different transfer categories when you follow the on-screen instructions.

For a PS4 owner, buying a second copy is generally unnecessary because the announced upgrade is free. For a new buyer interested only in Online, standalone avoids paying for Story Mode. For someone who wants both modes, compare the live bundle price: the observed October 2026 promotion made the full edition only $5 more than standalone Online.
Region, edition and account checks before you buy
- Check the storefront country: The $19.99 and $24.99 figures are US observations. Currency conversion, tax and local promotions can change the displayed amount.
- Check the edition label: PS4 and PS5 versions can appear together. Confirm that the selected download is the PS5 version.
- Check the purchasing account: The free upgrade is associated with the account that owns the PS4 entitlement. A family member’s or secondary account’s purchase may not unlock the offer for you.
- Check catalog status: PlayStation Plus Extra inclusion can change. Treat it as subscription access rather than a guaranteed permanent copy.
- Check what you actually want: Standalone Online excludes Story Mode; the full edition includes both.
Troubleshooting common purchase and upgrade problems
The PS5 store asks you to pay even though you own PS4 GTAV
Sign out and back in to the purchasing PlayStation account, then inspect your transaction history and the edition selector again. Search for the PS5 version directly rather than opening only the PS4 product page. If the entitlement is still missing, confirm that the PS4 copy is attached to that account and that you are not viewing a different regional storefront.

You installed GTA V but cannot enter GTA Online
First identify whether you installed the PS5 edition or only the PS4 application. Then check the PlayStation Plus status on the account attempting to play. The game license and the recurring multiplayer subscription are separate requirements.
Your old character is not visible on PS5
Use the one-time migration flow with the same PlayStation and Rockstar identities used for the previous character. Do not create or select an unrelated account while expecting the old progression to appear. Story Mode saves and GTA Online progression use separate migration categories, so follow the prompt for the type of progress you are transferring.
You expected Story Mode with the standalone purchase
The standalone listing explicitly says Story Mode can be purchased separately. Return to the product page and select the Story Mode add-on or choose the complete GTAV edition if that bundle offers better value at the time.

- Own PS4 GTAV? Claim the PS5 upgrade first; do not repurchase before checking the entitlement.
- Do not own GTAV and want only multiplayer? Choose GTA Online standalone for PS5.
- Want the campaign too? Choose the full GTAV PS5 edition and compare its current price with standalone Online.
- Have PlayStation Plus Extra? Verify that GTAV is still listed in your region’s catalog before relying on subscription access.
- Want to play online? Keep an active PlayStation Plus subscription on the playing account.
That distinction answers the original question: a new purchase is not automatically required, and Story Mode is not required for GTA Online. Your existing PS4 entitlement, your preferred modes and the current regional storefront determine the least expensive legitimate route.
