If an Android app genuinely emulates PS3 games, expect its requirements to distinguish the game from the console’s system software: they are separate components, and one does not replace the other. RPCS3 setup guidance calls for official PS3 firmware and game dumps you legally own, but that does not establish the requirements of any particular Android app. “BIOS” is also misleading here: Sony’s official PS3 update file is named PS3UPDAT.PUP, not a generic BIOS download.

What you need depends on whether the app really emulates PS3

An emulator is the application that imitates a console’s hardware and software environment. It is not the game itself, and it is not the console’s system software. For a PS3 emulator, keep these three pieces separate:

  • The emulator: the app or program that attempts to run PS3 software.
  • System firmware: official PS3 system software that an emulator may require to supply parts of the console’s software environment.
  • Game content: files for the particular PS3 title you want to run.

RPCS3 setup guidance surfaced for this topic says to use official PS3 firmware and game dumps that you legally own. That is useful guidance for RPCS3, but it should not be treated as a verified setup manual for an Android app. Requirements, file handling, and compatibility can differ between emulator projects. Check the official documentation for the specific app before downloading files or changing settings.

So the practical answer is conditional: if an app genuinely emulates PS3 and its official instructions require both components, you need both the system firmware and the relevant game files. If it is not actually a PS3 emulator, the presence of “PS3” in its name or listing does not make PS3 files useful or necessary.

PS3 firmware is not a generic BIOS download

“BIOS” is often used casually to mean console firmware, but the official Sony artifact relevant to PS3 setup is a system software update file. Sony’s US PlayStation support page identifies that file as PS3UPDAT.PUP. It is not a game, and downloading it does not give you the files for a PS3 title.

Sony’s US support page lists PS3 system software update 4.93 and describes an update method using a FAT32 USB drive. Treat that version as what the page lists, not as a promise that every emulator needs that exact version or that it is the latest version everywhere. Sony’s instructions explain obtaining and handling its update data; they are not a complete Android-emulator installation guide.

Sony warns users not to update using data from sources other than official Sony update data or by methods other than those described in product documentation or on its support site. For an emulator, use Sony’s official source for the update file, then follow the emulator’s own current instructions for whether and how to install firmware. Do not substitute a file from an unofficial download site just because its name looks right.

Game files and firmware solve different problems

Firmware represents system software for the console; game files represent a specific title. An emulator that needs both uses them for different parts of the setup. A firmware file cannot stand in for a missing game, and game files do not automatically provide the system software an emulator expects.

RPCS3’s surfaced guidance refers to game dumps that users legally own. That statement is specific to the guidance found for RPCS3; it does not establish a universal rule for every Android project, nor does it explain how to create a dump. Follow the law that applies where you live and consult the official documentation for the emulator and title. A game’s physical disc, a download listing, or a copy of another person’s files should not be assumed to be a usable game dump.

There may also be title-specific files or licensing requirements, but the available information does not establish what any current Android project requires on a per-game basis. Look for explicit instructions for the individual title rather than assuming that every PS3 game uses an identical setup.

How to verify an Android app before gathering files

Do not decide that an app can run PS3 games from its name, screenshots, store description, or a video clip alone. In a December 9, 2024 blog post, the RPCS3 project warned about scam apps claiming to be PS3 emulators and said it knew of no other PS3 emulator able to run PS3 games. That is a dated statement from the RPCS3 project, not a guarantee about the Android landscape in October 2026. It does mean a confident claim deserves verification before you trust the app with downloads, device permissions, or game files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the project’s official release source. Look for a release page or documentation controlled by the project, and check that the app you are considering is actually linked there. A similarly named listing is not proof of affiliation.
  2. Check whether it is maintained. Look for dated release notes, supported Android versions, and project documentation. If the project gives no clear release history or support information, you cannot confidently infer that its build is current.
  3. Check your device’s support. Confirm the stated Android version and processor or graphics requirements against your phone or tablet’s specifications. A general “Android compatible” claim does not establish that a particular device can run a particular PS3 game.
  4. Look for per-game compatibility information. A published compatibility record should identify specific titles and, ideally, distinguish whether they start, remain playable, or have known problems. A demonstration of one game does not establish compatibility with another.
  5. Read the setup instructions before downloading files. Confirm whether the app requires official system firmware, game dumps, title-specific files, or some combination. Check supported formats and the exact installation method in the project’s own documentation.
  6. Stop if the instructions are unclear or the source is unverified. Do not install files labeled “BIOS” or “PS3 games” from an unknown site on the assumption that they are required. The label alone does not establish what the file contains or whether it is safe, official, or usable.

These checks do not certify an app as safe or compatible. They help separate a documented emulator project from an unsupported claim, and they make clear what you still need to verify for your device and chosen game.

Getting Sony’s update file with the documented USB method

Sony’s US support page gives a PC/Mac USB procedure for PS3 system software. This is Sony’s console-update file handling, not a sequence for installing firmware in an Android app. The emulator may use a different installation path, so do not assume the USB instructions apply directly to it.

  1. Use Sony’s official US PlayStation support page titled “How to update PS3 console system software” and follow its current instructions. The page lists update 4.93.
  2. Prepare a USB drive formatted as FAT32.
  3. Create the folders PS3/UPDATE on the drive.
  4. Save the official update file in that folder with the filename PS3UPDAT.PUP.
  5. For emulator use, return to the emulator’s official documentation and follow its stated firmware-installation steps. The Sony page establishes the official update source and the console USB method; it does not specify an Android emulator’s menus, folder paths, or supported firmware behavior.

A USB drive is optional transfer equipment if you need to move the file between devices. It is not a requirement for emulation in itself, and it does not contain a game or replace firmware. If your device or app provides another documented transfer method, use its official instructions rather than buying hardware on the assumption that USB is mandatory.

Common mistakes and what to check

  • Assuming “BIOS” means one universal file: Sony identifies its PS3 update file as PS3UPDAT.PUP. Check the emulator’s documentation for the exact system-software file it accepts.
  • Downloading firmware from an unofficial mirror: Sony explicitly directs users to official update data. Obtain the update from Sony’s support source, and do not treat an unofficial copy as equivalent.
  • Expecting firmware to include games: Firmware and game content are separate. If the emulator requires a game dump, you need the files for the title you intend to play as well.
  • Following PC instructions as if they were Android instructions: RPCS3 setup guidance does not verify the menus or requirements of an Android app. Use the Android project’s own current instructions.
  • Trusting an app because it launches: An app opening successfully does not demonstrate that it can emulate PS3 games. Verify its official source, documented maintenance, device support, and game-specific compatibility.
  • Using one game as proof for all games: Compatibility is a title-level question. Look for a published record for the game you want, not just a general claim that the emulator supports PS3.

What is established—and what is not

The supported distinction is clear: an emulator, PS3 system firmware, and game content are separate components. RPCS3 setup guidance calls for official firmware and legally owned game dumps, while Sony’s US support page identifies its update file as PS3UPDAT.PUP and documents a FAT32 USB method. Those points explain the terminology and the likely components for an emulator whose official instructions require them.

They do not establish that a currently maintained Android app can run PS3 games reliably, which Android devices or games it supports, or the exact steps to install firmware in such an app. RPCS3’s warning about misleading Android claims was published December 9, 2024, and should be understood as a dated warning. Verify current claims through an app’s official project source and documentation rather than treating the warning as a present-day survey of every Android release.
