In practical terms, if you want to play against other people through the game’s online modes or use its online profile features on PS5, plan on having both the subscription and an internet connection. Owning the game, whether on disc or digitally, does not replace the subscription requirement. The answer is about access to online features, not whether you have purchased the game.
The wording also covers “other online features,” not only the five features named individually. So it is safest to treat any feature that connects you to the game’s online services as subject to the PS5 requirement, rather than assuming that a feature is exempt simply because it is not one of the named match types.
Can you play without PS Plus?
Yes, if you stick to offline content on PS5. The FAQ says offline modes and content can be accessed without a PlayStation Plus account. It lists these modes and features:

Arcadia Rumble is described as playable offline with optional online features. That distinction matters: an optional online component does not make the offline portion subject to the PS5 online requirement. You can use its offline play without PS Plus, while its online features fall under the FAQ’s general requirement. Do not treat “optional online features” as a promise that every part of the mode is available online without a subscription.

Likewise, the list of offline modes does not make online play within the game free of the subscription requirement. The relevant question is whether you are using offline content or an online feature. Playing locally or practicing in Training Mode is different from entering an online lobby, joining a private room, or taking part in a Ranked or Casual Match.

The FAQ does not list PlayStation Plus as a PC online requirement. Its platform-specific wording names a PlayStation Account for PC online features, rather than a PlayStation Plus account. Do not carry the PS5 subscription rule over to PC. The PC distinction is not that online play needs no account at all: the FAQ does specify a PlayStation Account and an internet connection.
For someone deciding where to play, the simplest comparison is this: PS5 online features require PS Plus plus internet; PC online features require a PlayStation Account plus internet, according to the FAQ. Offline access has its own separate allowance on both platforms. The FAQ says PC offline modes can be played without a PlayStation Account, just as PS5 offline modes do not require PS Plus.
This is a platform-specific rule, not a universal rule for every copy of the game. If you own or are considering both versions, apply the requirement to the platform on which you plan to use the online features. The official FAQ describes the requirements by PS5 and PC SKU rather than by purchase format.
Disc and digital editions do not change the rule
The game is available as a digital PS5 edition through the PlayStation Store, and a Target retailer listing identifies a PS5 Blu-ray disc edition. Those are different ways to buy the game; neither changes the account requirement for online play on PS5. A disc purchase gives you the game, not PlayStation Plus access.

For example, buying a physical copy does not let you enter Ranked Matches or a private Room Match without meeting the same online requirements as a digital owner. Conversely, you can access the listed offline modes without PS Plus, regardless of whether you own a disc or digital edition. Format determines how you obtain the game, not whether its online services require the subscription.
The US PlayStation Store listing showed a Standard Edition price of $59.99 when observed on October 12, 2026. That is the displayed game price, not a PlayStation Plus fee and not an estimate of the cost of online access. Store prices and availability can change, and the FAQ cited here does not specify a subscription price or plan. Check the current store listing and current PlayStation Plus terms for costs before making a purchase decision.
If you are comparing a disc and digital edition, therefore, make two separate decisions: which game format you prefer, and whether you need PS Plus for the way you intend to play online. Buying either format does not remove the PS5 online requirement. If you only intend to use offline content, the FAQ says you can access it without PS Plus.
Why beta information may give a different answer
PlayStation’s July 16, 2026 open-beta explainer said, “A PlayStation Plus subscription is not required.” That statement applied to the open beta. It is not the rule for online features in the released PS5 game: the current support FAQ says PS Plus is required for those features.
If you remember playing the beta without a subscription, that experience does not establish that the released game works the same way. Beta access had its own guidance; the released-game FAQ specifies the current distinction between PS5 online features, offline content, and PC requirements. When you see conflicting statements, check whether they refer to the beta or the released game, and whether they refer to PS5 or PC.

The beta exception should not be used to infer that the full game is subscription-free online. It was a statement about that open beta, while the FAQ updated August 18, 2026, explicitly covers online features for the PS5 SKU. For the released game, use the FAQ’s platform-specific requirements rather than carrying over the beta rule.
Choose the version that fits how you play
- You plan to play online on PS5: You need a PlayStation Plus account and an internet connection for the online features named in the FAQ, including Ranked, Casual, and private Room Matches.

- You are choosing between a PS5 disc and digital purchase: Format does not alter the online subscription rule.
- You are relying on something you read about the beta: Keep the beta statement separate; PlayStation’s no-PS-Plus note was beta-specific, not the released-game rule.
A useful way to decide is to identify your intended activity first. If that activity is an online match, online lobby, private room, or another online feature on PS5, account for both PS Plus and internet access. If it is one of the offline modes, the FAQ says PS Plus is not needed. If you will play on PC, use the PC rule rather than the PS5 rule: a PlayStation Account and internet connection are specified for PC online features, with no PS Plus requirement stated.
PlayStation also says the game supports any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller. Those are optional control choices, not prerequisites for playing and not alternatives to PlayStation Plus for PS5 online features. They may be relevant if you want a different fighting-game control setup, but buying one does not change the account, subscription, or internet requirements.
