Usually, no. Most free-to-play games downloaded from the PlayStation Store can be played online without a PlayStation Plus membership. Sony specifically lists Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. The exception is that requirements are set per game, so check the title’s current PlayStation Store listing before assuming access. For most games you buy, online multiplayer normally does require PlayStation Plus.
The rule in one minute
PlayStation Plus is generally not required for a free-to-play game’s online multiplayer. “Free-to-play” describes the game’s access model: you can download and start the base game without buying it. Sony’s PlayStation FAQ says that most free-to-play games, including Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, do not require a membership.
The rule changes for the majority of games that you purchase on disc or through the PlayStation Store. Sony’s support guidance says that most PS4 and PS5 games need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. A game can be free to download yet still have a title-specific requirement, which is why the Store listing is the final check.

There is no official universal percentage or complete total for how many free-to-play titles are exempt. Sony provides examples and a per-game checking rule, not a permanent catalog statistic.

What “free-to-play” means for the Plus question
A free-to-play title normally has no upfront purchase price for its core download. It may support online matches, social systems, seasons, cosmetic items or other optional purchases. Those features do not, by themselves, mean you must subscribe to PlayStation Plus. The relevant questions are whether the title is classified as free-to-play and what the Store currently says about online play.
Free download does not mean every feature is identical
A game can let you download its base client for free while offering optional content inside the game. The presence of a digital store, paid add-ons or a battle-pass-style purchase is not a reliable test for Plus access. Check the game’s service requirement instead of inferring it from how the game earns money.
Online and offline modes are separate decisions
When you check a requirement, identify the mode you want to use. The question is normally about online multiplayer: joining other players, competitive matches or cooperative sessions over the internet. A title may also contain menus, training, practice or other non-multiplayer activity. Do not assume that a prompt for one mode describes every mode in the game; read the listing and the in-game message for the activity you selected.

Sony’s PlayStation FAQ states: “Most free to play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone do not require a membership.” That is a “most” statement, not a promise that every free title in every region and edition is exempt.

Its support guidance separately says: “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” It also says: “Some games don’t require a subscription, check PlayStation™Store to see if PlayStation Plus is required for online play.” These statements establish two practical rules: free-to-play games are the common exception, and the individual Store page takes priority when a title is uncertain.
How to check a game before you download it
Use the Store listing as the authoritative check for the exact game, platform and edition you are considering. The wording and layout can change, so look for the requirement shown on the current page rather than relying on an old video, forum post or a different edition.
- Open PlayStation Store. On your PS4 or PS5, launch the Store app. You can also open the game’s listing through the console search or the listing associated with the game’s download page.
- Search for the exact title. Confirm that you have selected the intended PS4 or PS5 version, rather than a similarly named add-on, bundle, demo or soundtrack.
- Open the full product page. Do not rely only on a search-result tile. Product details contain the service information that applies to that listing.
- Find the online-play requirement. Check whether the page marks PlayStation Plus as required for online play. Sony’s support instruction is to use this Store information when deciding whether a subscription is needed.
- Match the requirement to your activity. If you only want the game’s online multiplayer, read the online-play line. If you are evaluating an add-on or a separate edition, check that item’s own listing.
- Recheck after a major change. A game’s services, editions or Store presentation can change. If the console later displays a different requirement, compare the current listing with the message before buying a membership.
If the listing clearly says that Plus is not required and the game still blocks you, record the exact title, platform, region and error wording. Those details help PlayStation Support determine whether the issue is an account, network or title-specific problem.

Fortnite
Sony names Fortnite as a free-to-play example that does not require a membership. You can therefore treat it as a representative case of the general exemption, while still checking the current listing if you are using a particular edition or encountering a different prompt.

Apex Legends
Apex Legends is another example in Sony’s FAQ. Its online nature does not by itself create a Plus requirement because Sony classifies it among the free-to-play games that generally work without one.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Sony also lists Call of Duty: Warzone (written as “Call of Duty Warzone” in the FAQ) as an example. Make sure you are selecting the free Warzone listing rather than a separately sold Call of Duty product, because the purchased-game rule applies to most games bought on disc or from the Store.
Why a game can still ask for Plus
A Plus prompt does not always mean the general free-to-play rule was wrong. Several checks can explain the difference.
- You opened a purchased product. A paid base game, bundle or separate multiplayer product may follow the purchased-game rule even when the same franchise has a free-to-play title.
- You selected a different edition. PS4 and PS5 versions, bundles and add-ons can have separate Store pages and separate service labels.
- The prompt concerns a different mode. Read whether the message appears when entering online multiplayer, a paid expansion or another service.
- The listing and software disagree. Capture the current Store label and the on-screen message. If they conflict, use PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly purchasing or cancelling a subscription.
- The title’s policy changed. Sony does not publish a permanent percentage covering every free-to-play title. A current Store check is more reliable than an old list of exempt games.
Free-to-play versus purchased games
The business model is the fastest first filter, but it is not the final authority. Use this decision path:

- Did you buy the game? If yes, assume online multiplayer will usually require Plus, then verify the Store page.
- Is it labeled free-to-play? If yes, Plus is usually not required for online multiplayer.
- Does the Store explicitly state a requirement? Follow that current, title-specific statement over a general rule.
- Are you comparing games in one franchise? Check each listing independently. A free-to-play companion title and a paid main release can have different access rules.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: subscribing unnecessarily because a game has online features, and assuming that every free download is exempt without checking its listing.
What PlayStation Plus adds if you choose to subscribe
You do not need Plus merely because a free-to-play game is online when the Store says membership is not required. A subscription can still be useful for other PlayStation features. Sony’s support information lists these benefits:

These benefits are separate from the free-to-play exception. Subscribe because you need one of them or because a particular purchased game requires online multiplayer access—not because every game downloaded from the Store automatically needs Plus.
A practical checklist before paying for a membership
- Identify whether the title is free-to-play or a paid game.
- Confirm the exact PS4 or PS5 listing, not an add-on or bundle.
- Read the Store line describing PlayStation Plus and online play.
- Check whether your intended activity is online multiplayer or another mode.
- If the game displays a contradictory prompt, save the wording and contact PlayStation Support before buying access solely to test it.
Frequently misunderstood cases
“It has online multiplayer, so Plus must be mandatory.”
That conclusion is too broad. Sony’s listed free-to-play examples have online multiplayer and still do not require a membership. The purchased-versus-free-to-play model and the Store requirement matter more than the mere presence of an online mode.

“The game costs nothing, so every version is covered.”
A free download may sit beside paid editions, expansions or products with similar names. Verify the exact listing you intend to launch. The exemption applies to the free-to-play title identified by the Store, not automatically to every related product.
“A subscription is required because the game offers purchases.”
Optional purchases do not establish a Plus requirement. Free-to-play games can monetize through optional content while still allowing online play without the membership, as Sony’s examples demonstrate.
Answer for PS4 and PS5 players
For both PS4 and PS5, the safe answer is the same: most free-to-play PlayStation Store games can be played online without PlayStation Plus, while most purchased games need Plus for online multiplayer. Sony’s own examples are Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone. Because Sony describes the rule as “most” and directs players to the Store for exceptions, check the current listing for any title that is not clearly covered.
