Usually, no. If you bought an eligible PS4 game, Sony’s upgrade flow does not list PlayStation Plus as a requirement to download its PS5 version. You need an internet connection, the same PlayStation account that owns the game, and access to the upgrade offer from the PS5 game hub. If your entitlement comes from a PS4 disc, keep that disc inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version.
PlayStation Plus changes the answer in three specific situations: you are downloading the game from the Plus Game Catalog, you originally claimed the PS4 copy as a Plus benefit, or you want to use online multiplayer in a paid game. The individual game’s PS5 hub and PlayStation Store listing determine the final upgrade price and eligibility.
When PlayStation Plus is and is not required
“PS5 remaster upgrade” can describe several different entitlements. A player who purchased a PS4 game outright is in a different position from someone borrowing access through a subscription catalog. Check which row matches your copy before troubleshooting the download.

The key distinction is ownership. A purchased PS4 entitlement can qualify for an upgrade without a Plus subscription, while subscription access is conditional. “Free” in an upgrade offer also does not mean that every way of obtaining the PS4 game qualifies.

What Sony’s upgrade policy actually covers
Sony describes the program this way: “Certain PlayStation®4 games can be upgraded to the digital PlayStation®5 version of the game on a PS5® console.” The word certain matters. There is no universal upgrade for every PS4 release, and each publisher can set different eligibility, pricing, and timing terms.
An upgrade is normally tied to a qualifying PS4 license. The PS5 content can be offered at no additional charge, for a fee, or at a discount. PlayStation Plus is not a blanket prerequisite for any of those download options. You still need to be signed in, have enough console storage, and have an internet connection to obtain the digital PS5 files.
The PS5 game hub is the authoritative place to check a particular title. If the hub shows no upgrade offer, the game may not participate, your account may not own the qualifying edition, the offer may have expired, or the disc/account region may not match the console’s account region. Sony’s support guidance says upgrade terms vary by game, so a general rule cannot override the offer shown for your copy.
How to download an eligible PS5 upgrade
Use this sequence for a PS4 purchase that you believe qualifies. The labels can vary slightly by game, but the route is consistent with Sony’s official upgrade flow.

- Sign in to the correct account. On the PS5, use the PlayStation account that purchased the digital PS4 game or is associated with the qualifying disc entitlement. Switching to another account can make the upgrade option disappear.
- Install the PS4 game if necessary. For a digital purchase, confirm that the PS4 license appears in your game library. For a disc purchase, insert the original PS4 disc so the console can identify the entitlement.
- Open the game hub. Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen or in your library and open its game hub rather than selecting a generic search result from the Store.
- Review the upgrade offer. Look for an option labeled as a PS5 upgrade or PS5 version. Read whether the price is free, paid, or discounted and verify that it applies to your edition.
- Select Download or purchase the upgrade. A free offer starts the download. A paid or discounted offer requires you to complete the displayed purchase before downloading.
- Wait for installation to finish. The PS5 version is digital content, so download time depends on the game size and your connection. PlayStation Plus does not accelerate or authorize this ordinary entitlement.
- Keep a qualifying disc inserted. If the upgrade came from a PS4 disc, leave that disc in the console whenever you start the PS5 digital version. The disc is the license check, not merely installation media.
If you own the digital PS4 edition, no disc check is needed. The console verifies the digital license through the account that owns it.
Disc owners: the requirement many players miss
A disc-based upgrade produces a digital PS5 installation, but it does not turn the disc entitlement into a standalone digital license. The PS4 disc must be inserted each time you play. Removing it after installation, lending it out, or using a different disc edition can prevent the PS5 version from launching.
Before buying a disc upgrade, check the edition and region. A disc from one region paired with an account from another can show different Store offers or fail to validate downloadable content. If the game hub presents a price instead of the expected upgrade, verify that the inserted disc is the exact edition named by the offer.
When the Plus Game Catalog changes the answer
The Game Catalog is a subscription library, not a permanent purchase. Downloading a title from it requires the PlayStation Plus plan that includes the catalog. That requirement applies even when the same game has an upgrade path.

Catalog access is conditional in two ways:
- Your Plus membership must remain active.
- The title must remain in the catalog; games can leave even while your membership continues.
If either condition ends, the downloaded game can become unavailable to play until you renew the appropriate membership or purchase the game separately. A catalog download therefore should not be confused with owning an eligible PS4 copy. The game hub may show a PS5 version, but the catalog license still governs access.
Check the label attached to the game in your library and in the Store. A purchased copy normally shows an ownership or purchase entitlement; a catalog copy identifies the subscription source. If you later buy the game, the purchased license can replace the conditional catalog access, but the upgrade price and eligibility remain title-specific.
PS4 games claimed as a Plus benefit
Sony states that PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless otherwise indicated. This is separate from the Game Catalog. In both cases you may be able to download the PS4 game through Plus, but the license is not automatically treated as a purchased copy for upgrade purposes.

The publisher may restrict it to purchased licenses, or may publish a special exception for a Plus-redeemed edition. The game’s hub is the place to look for that exception. If no qualifying offer appears, buying the PS4 or PS5 version may be the only supported route.

Do you need Plus to play the upgraded game?
For offline or single-player play, Plus is generally not required when you own the qualifying game. The ownership check described above is separate from the subscription check for network features.
Most paid PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. That requirement applies after installation and is not evidence that Plus was needed to download the upgrade. Some games are exempt, particularly titles whose online access follows different free-to-play rules, so check the specific game’s PlayStation Store listing before subscribing.
Consider the functions separately:
- Downloading the upgrade: governed by the PS4 entitlement and the game’s upgrade offer.
- Launching offline modes: generally governed by ownership; Plus is not a general requirement.
- Joining online multiplayer in a paid game: usually requires Plus, subject to the game’s exemption.
- Using a catalog copy: requires the appropriate active Plus plan and continued catalog availability, even for offline play.
How price and edition terms affect eligibility
An upgrade can be free, paid, or discounted. The presence of a charge does not indicate that Plus is required; it indicates the publisher’s commercial terms for that game. Conversely, a free label does not guarantee eligibility if your PS4 copy came from a Plus benefit or a catalog.
Check these details before confirming a purchase:
- The exact PS4 edition you own, including special or bundled editions.
- Whether the offer is permanent or available only during a stated period.
- Whether the PS5 version is a digital entitlement that still requires a disc check.
- Whether the price shown is a one-time upgrade charge or the full PS5 purchase price.
- Whether add-ons, expansions, or season-pass content are included; the upgrade offer may cover only the base game.
Only the individual game hub and Store listing can establish the current amount. Do not infer the price or included content from another title in the same series.

A practical decision path for your specific game
- Identify the source of your PS4 copy. Was it purchased digitally, purchased on disc, downloaded from the Game Catalog, or redeemed as a Plus monthly benefit?
- Check the account. Sign in to the account that made the purchase or claimed the benefit. A family member’s license may not transfer to your account.
- Open the PS5 game hub. Look for a clearly labeled PS5 upgrade offer and read its eligibility text.
- Match the offer to the copy. Confirm the edition, disc region, and whether the offer says free, paid, or discounted.
- Separate download from play requirements. If you plan to use online multiplayer, check the game’s Store listing for its Plus requirement even after the upgrade downloads.
- Resolve a missing offer. Restore licenses from the PS5 account settings, restart the console, reinsert the qualifying disc if applicable, and revisit the hub. If the offer still does not appear, consult the publisher’s or Sony’s support page for that exact title rather than assuming Plus will fix it.
Common situations and the correct answer
“I bought the PS4 game digitally. Can I download the PS5 version without Plus?”
Usually yes, if the game is one of the titles with a PS5 upgrade. Sign in to the purchasing account and use the offer in the PS5 game hub. The offer may require payment.
“I own the PS4 disc. Can I play the upgraded version without Plus?”
Usually yes for offline play. Download the PS5 version through the offer and insert the PS4 disc whenever you launch it. Online multiplayer in a paid game may still require Plus.
“I downloaded the PS4 game from the Game Catalog. Why is the PS5 version locked?”
The catalog license requires the correct active Plus plan and continued inclusion of the title. If the game has left the catalog or your membership ended, the download does not provide permanent ownership.

Sony generally excludes Plus-redeemed PS4 games from PS5 upgrades unless a specific exception is announced. A separate purchase may be required.
“The upgrade downloaded, but multiplayer asks for Plus. Is something wrong?”
Not necessarily. Download eligibility and online multiplayer eligibility are separate. Most paid games require Plus for online multiplayer, while some games are exempt; verify the title’s Store listing.
Bottom line for deciding whether to subscribe
Do not subscribe to PlayStation Plus solely to download an ordinary PS5 upgrade for a PS4 game you purchased. First check the game hub: ownership, edition, upgrade price, and disc requirements determine that transaction. Subscribe when your access comes from the Game Catalog, when a Plus-redeemed copy is the only license you have and the title offers no exception, or when you need online multiplayer for a paid game. Those are different decisions, and the game-specific offer is the final authority.
