Yes. Nintendo says online features in The Duskbloods require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, plus a Nintendo Account and an internet connection. You also need a Nintendo Switch 2 because the game is exclusive to that system.

The short answer

Nintendo’s official product information gives a direct requirement: “Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online features.” Internet access is also required for those features. In practical terms, an online player needs four things in place before trying to join a match:

  • A Nintendo Switch 2 system.
  • A copy of The Duskbloods.
  • A Nintendo Account linked to the console user.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a working internet connection.

The membership is not bundled with the game. Nintendo lists the software as available exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, so an original Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite is not the platform identified for this title.

Requirements at a glance

Requirement What the official information establishes Why it matters
Nintendo Switch Online Required for online features; sold separately. Without the subscription, Nintendo’s stated online entitlement is missing.
Nintendo Account Required alongside Nintendo Switch Online. The account is the identity associated with the online user and membership.
Internet access Required for online features. The console must be able to reach Nintendo’s online services and the game’s online functions.
Nintendo Switch 2 The Duskbloods is listed as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Older Switch hardware is not the platform specified for the game.
Online player count Nintendo lists 1–8 online players. FromSoftware describes online multiplayer for up to eight players. A session can involve as many as eight online players, subject to the game’s own matchmaking and mode rules.

What you need to do before playing online

1. Use the correct console

Start with the hardware requirement. Nintendo describes The Duskbloods as available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system. That means buying or owning the game does not make it playable on an original Switch family console. If you are planning a purchase specifically for online play, confirm that the console is a Switch 2 rather than an earlier Switch model.

  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

2. Link a Nintendo Account

Nintendo names a Nintendo Account as a separate requirement from the subscription. The account should be linked to the user profile that will launch the game and join online activity. If several people use the same console, check which profile is selected before starting: the membership and online identity need to belong to the player attempting to connect.

3. Obtain Nintendo Switch Online separately

The product information does not present Nintendo Switch Online as part of the game purchase. You therefore need an active membership on the Nintendo Account being used for online features. The cited wording does not identify a particular membership tier or regional price. Plan names, prices, taxes and eligibility can differ by country, so check Nintendo’s current store information for your region rather than assuming that a specific plan or promotional offer applies.

4. Connect the console to the internet

A subscription alone is not enough. Nintendo also states that internet access is required for the online features. Make sure the Switch 2 can connect to your home network or another supported connection and that the connection remains available while you are playing. If the console cannot reach online services, the membership cannot be used for a match.

5. Launch the game with the subscribed profile

Use the same Nintendo Account that has the active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If the console is signed in with a different profile, the game may not see the entitlement you intended to use. Selecting the correct user before entering an online mode avoids confusing an account problem with a network problem.

Can you play The Duskbloods multiplayer without Nintendo Switch Online?

Not for the online features covered by Nintendo’s requirement. The official product statement specifically conditions those features on a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account and internet access. A player who has the game and a Switch 2 but no active membership should not expect to enter the game’s online services until the account has the required subscription.

This does not establish every possible way the software might be used outside its online features. The available product information is about online access; it does not provide a complete description of offline modes, local wireless options or whether any single-player activities exist. Do not treat the absence of an online subscription as proof that every part of the game is inaccessible, and do not treat it as permission to join an internet match without the membership.

How many people can play online?

Nintendo’s product specification lists online play for 1–8 players. FromSoftware separately describes The Duskbloods as a PvPvE title with online multiplayer at its core, where up to eight players compete with one another and face challenging foes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What PvPvE means here

PvPvE means player-versus-player-versus-environment: human players contend with each other while also dealing with enemies or hazards controlled by the game. FromSoftware’s description establishes that both kinds of confrontation are part of the online concept. It does not, by itself, specify team sizes, matchmaking rules, private-lobby settings, cross-region play or whether every mode uses eight participants.

How to read the 1–8 figure

The number is a published capacity range, not a promise that every match will be full. Nintendo’s “1–8 online players” specification identifies the supported range, while FromSoftware’s “up to 8 players” wording gives the maximum. Actual participation can depend on the selected mode, matchmaking, connection conditions and the number of people available when you search.

Does the subscription come with the game?

No. Nintendo explicitly says the Nintendo Switch Online membership is sold separately. Treat the game and the online-service subscription as two different purchases or entitlements. A game purchase by itself does not satisfy the online-service requirement, and subscribing does not provide the game.

The official material supplied for this title does not state a price, free-trial period, family-account arrangement or which Nintendo Switch Online tier is accepted. Those details can change by country and over time. Check the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account membership information for the country in which the account is registered before budgeting for online play.

What happens if the account or network is wrong?

Most failures can be separated into account, subscription, hardware and connection checks. Work through them in that order so that a missing entitlement is not mistaken for a Wi-Fi fault.

  1. Confirm the hardware. Verify that the console is a Nintendo Switch 2, the platform Nintendo identifies for the game.
  2. Check the selected user. Return to the console’s user selection and make sure the intended Nintendo Account is launching the software.
  3. Verify membership status. In the Nintendo Account or eShop membership area, confirm that Nintendo Switch Online is active for that account and region.
  4. Test internet access. Use the Switch 2’s network-test function and confirm that it reports a successful connection. If the test fails, resolve the home-network issue before troubleshooting the game.
  5. Retry after reconnecting. Close and relaunch the game after the account and network checks. This refreshes the session using the currently selected profile.
  6. Check service notices. If the account, membership and network test are all valid but online access still fails, look for a Nintendo service interruption or a game-specific notice.
  7. Record any error code. When contacting Nintendo support, provide the exact code and the account region instead of describing it only as “multiplayer not working.”

These checks cannot determine an unannounced game rule, such as a mode-specific player limit or maintenance schedule. They only confirm that the prerequisites Nintendo publishes are present.

Is Nintendo Switch 2 the only supported platform?

For the information currently published by Nintendo and FromSoftware, yes: the title is described as developed for and available exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. The cited pages do not list a version for the original Nintendo Switch, another console, PC or mobile devices. If you are deciding whether to buy hardware for this game, the Switch 2 requirement is more fundamental than the subscription question: an online membership cannot turn an unsupported console into a compatible one.

When is The Duskbloods scheduled to release?

Nintendo and FromSoftware list the game for 2026. Neither cited page gives a specific launch day. That means a precise release date, pre-load schedule and the final online-service instructions should not be inferred from the year alone. Recheck the official product listing for your region when Nintendo publishes a day and any launch-specific requirements.

Important save-data limitation

Nintendo UK states that the software does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. This is separate from the membership requirement for online features. Having Nintendo Switch Online may allow the account to use the game’s online functions, but it does not mean that The Duskbloods save data is automatically copied to Nintendo’s cloud backup service.

Do not use the presence of the subscription as a guarantee that progress can be restored from the cloud after a lost, damaged or replaced console. The cloud-backup exclusion is a software-specific limitation listed by Nintendo UK, and it should be considered when planning hardware changes or account recovery.

Common assumptions to avoid

“I have internet, so I can play online.”

Internet access is necessary but not sufficient. Nintendo lists the Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership as additional requirements.

“The subscription should be included with the game.”

Nintendo says the membership is sold separately. Keep the one-time game purchase and the recurring or term-based service entitlement separate when calculating your costs.

“Any Switch model should work.”

The official listing identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the exclusive platform. An original Switch, Switch Lite or another device is not named as supported hardware.

“Eight players means every match has eight people.”

The published figure is a supported range or maximum. It does not guarantee a full lobby, a particular team arrangement or a specific matchmaking result.

“Nintendo Switch Online automatically backs up the save.”

Nintendo UK specifically says this software does not support Save Data Cloud backup, so online-play access and cloud-save support must be treated as separate features.

A practical readiness checklist

Use this checklist immediately before attempting an online session:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The console is a Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The game is installed or inserted on that console.
  • The selected user is linked to the intended Nintendo Account.
  • That account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • The console passes its internet connection test.
  • You understand that online sessions can support up to eight players, not necessarily eight in every match.
  • You have a separate plan for protecting progress because Save Data Cloud backup is not supported for this software.

If all six online-access prerequisites are satisfied and the service is available, you have the setup Nintendo identifies for joining The Duskbloods online. The remaining details—such as modes, matchmaking behavior and the final launch schedule—must come from Nintendo’s and FromSoftware’s later game-specific announcements.
