Yes. To play the Tomb Kings in Total War: WARHAMMER III’s Immortal Empires campaign, you need the Total War: WARHAMMER II – Rise of the Tomb Kings DLC. You do not need to own WARHAMMER II itself.

The requirements are separate: owning WARHAMMER III gives you access to Immortal Empires, while Rise of the Tomb Kings unlocks the Tomb Kings faction. SEGA’s current ownership guide sets out this distinction.

What you need to play the Tomb Kings

There are two separate checks: access to the campaign and access to the faction. WARHAMMER III provides access to Immortal Empires. The Tomb Kings are a paid faction unlock, provided by Rise of the Tomb Kings, a DLC originally released for WARHAMMER II.

What you want to do What you need What it unlocks
Play Immortal Empires Total War: WARHAMMER III Access to the Immortal Empires campaign, according to SEGA’s current ownership guide.
Play the Tomb Kings in Immortal Empires WARHAMMER III and Rise of the Tomb Kings on the same game client The Tomb Kings faction and its four Legendary Lords, according to SEGA’s guide and the Steam DLC listing.
Own the original game for which the DLC was released WARHAMMER II is not required for this unlock in WARHAMMER III, according to SEGA’s current guide. No additional requirement for playing the Tomb Kings in WARHAMMER III.

Creative Assembly’s earlier FAQ also says the DLC can be bought without owning its original game. Steam’s product listing identifies WARHAMMER II or WARHAMMER III as a base product required to play the add-on. In practical terms, a player with WARHAMMER III can buy the DLC for use in that game without first buying WARHAMMER II.

Total War: Warhammer II – Blood for the Blood God II [Online Game Code]
  • From the icy peaks of Naggaroth to the arid reaches of the Southlands, each race struggles for dominion. As their conquests grow, the land turns crimson, and rivers run red with the blood of the slain!
  • Blood for The Blood God brings a number of gory, mature-rated effects to Total War: WARHAMMER II

Which DLC unlocks them?

The specific add-on is Total War: WARHAMMER II – Rise of the Tomb Kings. It unlocks the Tomb Kings as a playable faction in Immortal Empires and includes these Legendary Lords:

  • Settra the Imperishable
  • High Queen Khalida
  • Grand Hierophant Khatep
  • Arkhan the Black

The DLC’s original association with WARHAMMER II can make its name confusing, but it is the Tomb Kings add-on that applies to WARHAMMER III. You do not need a separate Tomb Kings purchase for Immortal Empires.

How to check whether you have the right setup

  1. Confirm you own WARHAMMER III. SEGA’s current guide says ownership of the game grants access to Immortal Empires.
  2. Check your add-ons for Rise of the Tomb Kings. It is the faction unlock; owning WARHAMMER III alone does not make the Tomb Kings playable.
  3. Make sure both purchases are on the same game client. SEGA names Steam, Epic, and Microsoft/Game Pass as clients. A DLC purchase on one does not satisfy the same-client requirement for a game owned on another.
  4. Open Immortal Empires and check the faction selection. With the game and add-on correctly associated on that client, the Tomb Kings’ four Legendary Lords are the available starting choices.

Prices and sale availability can vary by store and region and change over time, so check the listing shown by the client where you own WARHAMMER III rather than relying on an old price.

Common ownership questions and mistakes

Can I play Tomb Kings in Immortal Empires without owning WARHAMMER II?

Yes. SEGA’s current ownership guide says you can buy older-game DLC without owning the original base game and use its associated Lords in WARHAMMER III. For this faction, you need Rise of the Tomb Kings and WARHAMMER III, not WARHAMMER II.

Does Immortal Empires access include every faction?

No. Access to the campaign and ownership of a particular faction’s DLC are different things. WARHAMMER III grants access to Immortal Empires; the Tomb Kings require their own add-on.

Does playing across platforms let me combine purchases?

No. Cross-play and DLC ownership are separate. The same-client rule means the game and the DLC must be owned through the same client; playing with someone using a different platform does not make purchases across stores interchangeable.

Do I need another WARHAMMER base game for Immortal Empires?

Not under SEGA’s current ownership guide: WARHAMMER III ownership grants access to Immortal Empires. Older launch-era wording about needing all three base games is historical guidance, not the current requirement.

What to buy—and what not to buy

If you already own WARHAMMER III, the relevant purchase for playing this faction is Rise of the Tomb Kings on the same client. If you do not own WARHAMMER III, the DLC by itself does not provide access to the game or its Immortal Empires campaign. Tabletop miniatures and other physical Tomb Kings products do not unlock the in-game faction.
