Yes—if you buy the Vienna Expansion by itself, you need to own City Transport Simulator 2026. The expansion is downloadable content for the existing game; it is not a standalone release. If you do not own the base game, buy the Vienna Edition, which combines City Transport Simulator 2026 and the Vienna Expansion in one package.
Both products were released on October 13, 2026. The practical choice is therefore simple: existing owners should choose the expansion, while new players should choose the Vienna Edition.
What you need to buy
ViewApp describes the Vienna Expansion as an add-on that “expands your existing game with the new Vienna map, all three real-world routes, and the associated vehicles and content.” In other words, the expansion supplies the Vienna content but assumes that the base simulation game is already installed or available in your library.

What the Vienna Expansion adds

These are the three routes identified in ViewApp’s announcement. The two tram lines and the bus line give the Vienna content a mixture of street-running tram operation and bus driving instead of limiting the expansion to a single vehicle type.
Vienna vehicles and scenery
The expansion includes Vienna-themed vehicles and recreated city scenery. ViewApp’s September 3, 2026 announcement says that more than 1,000 buildings were recreated for the expansion. That figure is a publisher-stated production detail, not an independent performance or quality measurement, so it should be read as an indication of the amount of modeled scenery rather than a guarantee about frame rate or visual fidelity on a particular computer or console.

The associated vehicles and content are part of the expansion package. You do not need to buy a separate vehicle pack to obtain the routes described in the announcement, although the exact contents shown on a storefront page can vary by platform and can be updated after launch.
If you already own City Transport Simulator 2026
Buy the Vienna Expansion on the same storefront and platform where you use the base game. The add-on is the correct purchase because your existing copy supplies the simulator needed to load the Vienna map and routes.
- Sign in to the account that owns City Transport Simulator 2026.
- Open the Vienna Expansion product page on your platform’s store.
- Check that the listing identifies the product as the expansion or downloadable content, rather than the full Vienna Edition.
- Complete the purchase and install the add-on.
- Start City Transport Simulator 2026 and look for the Vienna map or Vienna routes in the game’s available content.
If the expansion page displays both an add-on and a bundle, select the add-on only when the base game is already in your library. Buying the bundle as an owner of the base game may duplicate content you already have; whether a storefront adjusts the price or entitlement is a store-policy question, so verify the checkout screen before confirming.
If you do not own the base game
Choose the Vienna Edition instead of purchasing only the Vienna Expansion. The edition is specifically defined as the package that combines the base simulator and the Vienna add-on.

- Read the contents section and confirm that both City Transport Simulator 2026 and the Vienna Expansion are listed.

- Launch the base game, then select the Vienna map or one of the three Vienna routes from the game’s content selection.
Buying only the expansion without the simulator leaves you without the underlying game required to run it. The expansion does not replace the base game, and the Vienna Edition is not merely a cosmetic upgrade to an already owned copy.
Mouse, keyboard and controller requirements
The official publisher listing identifies mouse and keyboard and an Xbox controller as input options. A controller is therefore optional. You can play with mouse and keyboard if that is your preferred setup; an Xbox controller is an alternative, not a prerequisite for purchasing or using the Vienna content.

ViewApp announced October 13, 2026 as the release date for both the Vienna Expansion and the Vienna Edition. The Xbox listing identifies ViewApp as the developer and publisher and describes the Vienna Edition as the bundle containing the base game and expansion.

Prices, regional availability and package presentation can change after launch. A store may show the expansion and the edition as separate products, place them under a bundle section or change how ownership is displayed. Use the contents list on the current product page as the final check before buying rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party description.
Ownership can also be platform-specific. Make sure the product you buy is listed for the platform on which you intend to play, and sign in with the account that owns the base game when purchasing an add-on. The official materials identify an Xbox listing and a Steam announcement, but they do not establish that a purchase on one platform transfers automatically to another.

Confirm which product you bought
Open your order history or library and verify that the item is labeled Vienna Expansion or Vienna Edition. An expansion entitlement without a base-game entitlement will not provide the simulator itself. Conversely, a Vienna Edition should show both components.

Use the same account and platform
Check that the game and add-on are installed under the same store account. Also confirm that the add-on is for the same platform as the installed game. A listing on another platform is not evidence that its license is available on yours.
Finish installation and updates
Open the game’s manage-content or downloadable-content area and make sure the Vienna package is fully downloaded. Apply any pending game update, then restart the simulator. A partially installed add-on can remain invisible until the platform completes its download.
Look in the correct content menu
The Vienna routes may not appear as a separate application. Start City Transport Simulator 2026 and inspect the map, route or scenario selection screens for Vienna, lines 37 and 38, and line 35A. If the store shows ownership but the content is still missing, use the platform’s support process rather than buying a second copy.
Common buying mistakes
- Buying the expansion as a standalone game: it is DLC and requires City Transport Simulator 2026.
