For the standard Alexa app and Echo setup path, you need an Amazon account and an internet connection. You do not generally need Prime or a paid subscription just to access Alexa. Some optional Alexa features and third-party services may cost extra, and music choices depend on the service, device, and country.
What you need for the standard Alexa setup
Amazon’s standard app-and-Echo instructions require an Amazon account for the usual setup route. Amazon tells users to download the Alexa app and sign in with an Amazon account. Its Echo setup instructions use that app to set up or register supported Echo models.
Internet access is also required. Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use, last updated May 14, 2026, state: “An Alexa Enabled Product and internet connection are required to access and use Alexa.” The terms include Echo devices and the Alexa app as examples of Alexa-enabled products.

That describes the standard app and Echo paths; it should not be stretched into a claim about every third-party product or every possible arrangement. If you plan to use a particular Alexa-enabled device, check its setup instructions and feature requirements. The key requirements are the supported product, an internet connection, and (for the usual app and Echo setup) signing in to an Amazon account—not a Prime membership.

In practical terms, the standard Echo route starts with the Alexa app: download it, sign in, and use it to set up or register a supported Echo model. If you are using the Alexa app instead of an Echo, Amazon’s app instructions still tell you to sign in. The terms make internet connectivity a condition of accessing and using Alexa, so an Alexa-enabled device without a connection is not enough for Alexa access.
Do you need an Echo, or can you use the Alexa app?
An Echo is one way to access Alexa, not the only way. Amazon identifies both Echo devices and the Alexa app as Alexa-enabled products. Which route makes sense depends on what you want Alexa to do and whether the feature you have in mind requires a compatible device.
| Access route | What the official information establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa app | Amazon’s app instructions say to sign in with an Amazon account; Amazon lists the app as an Alexa-enabled product. | Confirm that the feature you want is available in the app and in your location. Internet access is required. |
| Echo device | Amazon’s setup guide uses the Alexa app to set up or register supported Echo models; Echo devices are Alexa-enabled products. | Check that the specific Echo model supports the feature you want, and follow its setup instructions. Internet access is required. |
| Another Alexa-enabled product | Amazon’s terms refer to Alexa-enabled products beyond Echo and the app, and note that availability can differ by product. | Use the product maker’s instructions and verify whether the feature and any associated service work with that product. |
The practical distinction is that having access to Alexa does not guarantee that every Alexa feature works on every device. Amazon’s terms say services may not be available everywhere or on every Alexa-enabled product. So if your goal depends on a particular capability, confirm compatibility before choosing a device.

The Alexa app is an identified Alexa-enabled product, but that does not establish that every voice- or device-dependent function is available through the app. Echo devices are also Alexa-enabled, but model support can differ. Amazon’s terms likewise warn that service availability can vary by area. Check both the specific product and your location when a feature is essential.
You do not need to buy an Echo simply to satisfy a general Alexa requirement: Amazon lists the Alexa app as another access route. An Echo may still be the relevant choice for a feature that calls for an Echo or another compatible device. For another manufacturer’s Alexa-enabled product, follow that maker’s setup directions rather than assuming Echo setup steps apply.

Is an Amazon account the same as Prime?
No. An Amazon account is the sign-in used in Amazon’s standard Alexa app and Echo setup instructions. Prime is a separate membership. The fact that a specific offer or premium feature may be associated with Prime does not mean Prime is a prerequisite for basic Alexa access.
For example, Amazon’s Alexa+ page describes Alexa+ as “free with Prime.” That statement concerns Alexa+; it is not evidence that standard Alexa requires Prime. Because offer eligibility and regional availability can change, check Amazon’s Alexa+ page for the current terms that apply to you.
Keep the two questions separate when deciding what you need:
- Can I set up and access Alexa? The standard app and Echo path uses an Amazon account and an internet connection.
- Do I need Prime for a particular offer or feature? That depends on the feature’s current terms; a Prime-related offer does not establish a general Alexa requirement.
In other words, having an Amazon account does not mean you have Prime, and having Prime is not the same as paying for every optional service. If you are evaluating a specific offer such as Alexa+, read its current eligibility and availability details. Do not infer from “free with Prime” that a Prime subscription is needed to use standard Alexa, or that every Alexa feature is included with Prime.
Does Alexa require a paid subscription?
There is no general paid subscription requirement established for basic Alexa access. Amazon’s terms instead distinguish access from optional services: some services may require separate fees or subscriptions, and certain optional Alexa features or premium features within third-party services may also cost extra.

| What you want to use | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Basic access to Alexa through a supported product | Amazon’s terms establish the need for an Alexa-enabled product and internet connection, not a general paid subscription. |
| An optional Alexa service or premium feature | A separate fee or subscription may apply. Check the terms for that specific feature. |
| A feature supplied by a third-party service | The third party’s premium features may have their own subscription or fee requirements; Alexa access alone does not include them. |
In other words, an Amazon account gets you through the standard sign-in and setup route, but it does not automatically unlock every paid service. Conversely, the existence of optional subscriptions does not mean you must subscribe simply to start using Alexa. Before paying, identify the exact feature or service you want and read its terms, including whether it is available on your device and in your region.
There is no single subscription answer for every thing you might ask Alexa to do. Basic Alexa access, an optional Alexa service, and a premium feature provided by a third party are different cases. A fee may be attached to the service or feature rather than to Alexa access as a whole. If a feature prompts you to subscribe or pay, check what the charge covers and whether that service works on your chosen product before signing up.
The official terms do not give one universal price for optional features, and the sources do not establish a single paid plan that unlocks all Alexa functions. Costs and eligibility belong to the specific service or feature. Treat a subscription requirement as feature-specific, rather than assuming that buying an Echo or having Prime covers every service.
Can Alexa play music for free without Prime or Music Unlimited?
In the United States, Amazon Music says customers without Prime or an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription can listen for free to an ad-supported selection of top playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. That is a specific free listening option, not a promise of unrestricted access to every song, playlist, station, or music service.
The qualification matters: the offer described in the Amazon Music FAQ is US-specific, ad-supported, limited to a selection of playlists and stations, and requires a compatible Alexa-enabled device. It should not be assumed to apply in other countries or to other services. If you want a particular catalog, song, or listening feature, check the relevant music service’s current terms rather than inferring access from Alexa itself.

So the answer to “Can I use Alexa to play music without Amazon Music Unlimited?” is yes in that limited US example, but it is not equivalent to an on-demand subscription catalog. The documented free option is ad-supported and covers a selection of playlists and stations. It does not establish what is available through other music services, in other countries, or on every Alexa-enabled product.
When comparing music options, check three things: whether the service is available where you live, whether your device is compatible, and whether the listening option is free with ads or requires a paid membership for the catalog or feature you want. Amazon’s specific free example is useful, but it should not be generalized to every song or listening request.
How to decide what you need
- Choose the access route. If you want to use the app, follow Amazon’s app download and sign-in instructions. If you want an Echo, use the Echo setup guide for the supported model.
- Have an Amazon account ready for the standard route. Amazon’s app instructions require signing in, and its Echo setup path uses the app to set up or register supported devices.
- Make sure the product can connect to the internet. Amazon’s terms require an internet connection to access and use Alexa.
- Name the feature you care about. Voice access, a premium Alexa feature, and a third-party service are not interchangeable. Determine whether the specific feature has an extra fee or subscription.
- Check device and location eligibility. Amazon warns that service availability may vary by area and Alexa-enabled product. Verify both before paying for a service or choosing hardware.
- For music, check the specific catalog and region. The free Amazon Music example applies to US customers, compatible devices, and an ad-supported selection of playlists and stations.
A useful way to apply that checklist is to start with the task. If you want standard Alexa access, follow the app or Echo setup route and plan on an Amazon sign-in and internet access. If you want a particular capability, first confirm that the app, Echo model, or other product supports it. Then check whether the service itself has separate availability, subscription, or fee terms. That order helps avoid paying for a service that does not work with your device or assuming that a general Alexa account includes a premium feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common assumptions to avoid
- “I need Prime to use Alexa.” The standard Alexa app and Echo setup instructions establish an Amazon account requirement, not a general Prime requirement.
- “I must buy an Echo.” Amazon also identifies the Alexa app as an Alexa-enabled product. A specific feature may still require compatible hardware.
- “If Alexa is free, every Alexa-linked service is free.” Optional services and premium features may have separate fees or subscriptions.
- “Free Alexa music means any song on demand.” The cited Amazon Music option is a limited, ad-supported selection of playlists and stations for US customers on compatible devices.
- “An Amazon account automatically includes every Alexa service.” The account supports the standard sign-in route; optional Alexa and third-party services may have separate terms.
- “A feature that works on one Alexa-enabled product will work on all of them.” Amazon says availability may vary by product and area, so check the exact combination you plan to use.
For model-specific setup, consult Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs as well as the product’s setup guide. Those details matter because a feature can depend on the product, service, and location, even when Alexa access itself does not require a paid membership.
Bottom line: for the standard Alexa app or Echo setup, plan on an Amazon account and an internet-connected Alexa-enabled product. You do not generally need Prime or a paid Alexa subscription just to access Alexa. Pay only when the particular optional feature or service you want requires it, and verify device and regional availability first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need an Amazon account to use Alexa?
For the standard Alexa app and Echo setup path, yes. Amazon’s app instructions tell users to sign in with an Amazon account, and its Echo guide uses the app to set up or register supported Echo models. Check the setup directions for a particular third-party Alexa-enabled product rather than assuming every arrangement is identical.
Can I use Alexa without Prime?
Generally, yes. The standard Alexa app and Echo setup use an Amazon account and internet connection; Prime is not established as a general requirement for Alexa access. A particular feature or offer, such as Alexa+, may have its own terms, so check current eligibility.
Does Alexa require a subscription?
Not as a general requirement for basic access, according to Amazon’s terms. Some optional Alexa services, features, and premium features in third-party services may require separate fees or subscriptions.
Do I need an Echo to use Alexa?
Not necessarily. Amazon identifies the Alexa app as an Alexa-enabled product as well as Echo devices. A particular feature may still require a compatible Echo or another supported product.
Can Alexa play music for free without Amazon Music Unlimited?
Amazon Music says US customers without Prime or Music Unlimited can listen to an ad-supported selection of playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. This is not unrestricted access to every song or a guarantee for other countries, services, or devices.
Can I use Alexa without an internet connection?
Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use say an Alexa-enabled product and an internet connection are required to access and use Alexa. Check a product’s instructions for its specific setup and feature requirements.
Does an Amazon account include paid Alexa or third-party services?
No such general inclusion is established. The account is used for standard app sign-in and Echo setup, while optional Alexa services and third-party premium features may have separate fees or subscription terms.
