AHCI is a standard interface that lets system software communicate with SATA storage controllers. You may benefit from its features, including Native Command Queuing (NCQ), but you do not need to switch to AHCI on every computer—and changing the SATA mode after installing an operating system can stop it from booting. Check your computer maker’s guidance and the operating system’s storage-driver support before changing the setting.
What AHCI is—and what it is not
Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is a register-level interface between system software and Serial ATA (SATA) controller hardware. Intel’s specification describes it as an interface between system memory and SATA devices: Intel AHCI Specification, revision 1.3.1.
AHCI is not a drive, a disk format, or a speed rating. It is one possible controller mode for SATA devices. A computer’s firmware may also offer modes such as IDE or a vendor RAID mode; which ones are available and appropriate depends on the system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat AHCI can do for a SATA drive
Native Command Queuing
AHCI supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ), which lets a compatible drive organize pending commands. Intel says NCQ can improve performance for random workloads when the drive, controller, and software all support the feature. Its stated requirements include Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) software, an NCQ-capable hard drive, and an Intel chipset or controller hub that supports AHCI: Intel: What Is Native Command Queuing?
#1 Best Overall
- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
This is a conditional benefit, not a guaranteed speed increase. The cited Intel material gives no general percentage uplift, and the result depends on the workload and compatible hardware and software.
Hot-plug support
AHCI-related systems can support inserting or removing certain SATA devices while the computer is running. That does not make every SATA port or drive safe to disconnect while powered on. Intel’s guidance makes hot-swap support dependent on Intel RST software, a compatible chipset or controller, and BIOS support enabled by the motherboard or system maker: Intel: SATA Hot Plug.

Other controller capabilities
The AHCI specification also describes capabilities such as port management, power-management mechanisms, and hot-plug behavior. Support for optional features varies by implementation, so an AHCI setting alone does not prove that a particular feature is available.
Should you change your SATA mode to AHCI?
Do not change a working system’s SATA mode just because AHCI sounds faster or newer. First identify the current mode, your computer model, and whether the installed operating system can boot using the target mode’s storage driver. Also check whether your system relies on RAID or vendor storage-management features. The computer maker’s documentation is the authority for the modes supported by that platform.

- EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMANCE: Enjoy professional level SSD performance with 870 EVO, which maximizes the SATA interface limit to 560/530 MB/s sequential speeds, Accelerates write speeds and maintains long term high performance with a larger variable buffer
- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
- AHCI may make sense when the platform supports it, the operating system has the required boot driver, and you need compatible SATA features such as NCQ.
- Keep the current mode if the system is stable and you have no specific reason to change it.
- Do not switch modes casually if RAID or vendor storage management is configured, or if you have not confirmed the operating system’s driver requirements.
There is no one correct setting for every computer. Compare available SATA features and controller compatibility, boot-driver readiness, any RAID or storage-management setup, and the platform maker’s instructions before deciding.
Why changing AHCI after installation can break boot
The operating system needs a suitable storage driver available early in startup to access the boot drive. If the firmware changes the controller mode and the installed system is not prepared for that mode, startup can fail. Microsoft documents a Windows 8 case in which switching from ATA to AHCI caused a reboot loop because the required boot-start driver was not installed by default: Microsoft: Stop error after changing the SATA mode of the boot drive. That article’s recovery procedure is specific to its documented Windows 8 case, not universal instructions for current Windows versions or other operating systems.

Intel also describes a case where a BIOS update changes a system’s SATA mode from IDE to AHCI and the existing installation no longer boots: Intel: System Does Not Boot After BIOS Update. A firmware update can therefore affect boot behavior even if you did not deliberately change the setting yourself.

Before changing the setting
- Identify the current mode. Check the firmware setup and note whether the controller is set to AHCI, IDE/legacy, RAID, or another listed option.
- Find the exact computer or motherboard model. Use its manufacturer documentation to confirm which modes and storage features the platform supports.
- Check the operating system and storage configuration. Confirm the target mode’s boot driver is available and determine whether RAID or vendor storage management is in use.
- Follow the manufacturer’s supported procedure. Do not apply instructions written for Windows 8 or a different computer to your setup without verifying they fit.
- Plan for recovery. Before changing firmware settings, know how to restore the previous mode if the operating system does not start.
Does AHCI apply to every SSD?
No. AHCI is the interface relevant to SATA controllers and SATA devices; it is not a universal SSD setting. Do not infer from this guidance that AHCI is required for every storage device or that changing to AHCI will improve every drive. The appropriate controller mode depends on the device and the platform.
