You need a Wi-Fi adapter only if your computer lacks built-in wireless networking or its existing adapter is unsuitable for your needs. Many laptops and some desktops already have Wi-Fi, so check before buying. A USB adapter or desktop PCIe card can connect one computer to an available wireless network; neither provides internet service nor fixes weak coverage throughout your home.
What a Wi-Fi adapter does
A Wi-Fi adapter is hardware that lets a computer connect to a wireless network. It may be built into the computer or added externally. Microsoft notes that many laptops and tablets, as well as some desktops, already have a wireless network adapter. Microsoft’s Windows guidance explains how to check for one.
An adapter connects your computer to a Wi-Fi network that already exists, such as your home router, a hotel network, or a phone hotspot. It does not create an internet connection or provide cellular data. It changes wireless connectivity for the computer it is installed on, not for every device on the network.
Check whether your computer already has Wi-Fi
On Windows
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a wireless or Wi-Fi adapter in the list. If you are unsure which entry is wireless, check the computer or adapter maker’s documentation.
If a wireless adapter is listed, you may not need another one. First consider whether it works reliably and supports the Wi-Fi capabilities your router and use case require.

When adding an adapter makes sense
- Your computer has no built-in Wi-Fi. This is a common reason to add wireless capability to a desktop, though some desktops already include it.
- The existing adapter is the limiting component. An upgrade may help if the computer’s wireless hardware is outdated or inadequate and the computer, drivers, router, and new adapter are compatible.
- You need wireless connectivity while traveling. An adapter can let a compatible computer connect to an available hotel network or hotspot, but it does not supply internet access by itself.
- You prefer a particular installation. A USB adapter is external and can be moved between compatible devices; an internal PCIe card is an option for a desktop with an available slot.
If your current Wi-Fi works reliably and meets your needs, a second adapter may add little. Diagnose the computer and connection before purchasing hardware.

Neither form factor guarantees better performance on its own. Check the adapter’s specifications against your computer and router rather than choosing by a speed label alone. The router, signal conditions, drivers, and the computer’s capabilities all affect the connection. TP-Link’s adapter guide describes the main form factors and selection considerations.

When a Wi-Fi adapter will not fix the problem
If one computer has a weak connection but other devices nearby work well, its adapter, driver, or position may be part of the problem. If multiple devices—or an entire room—have weak Wi-Fi, adding a USB adapter to one computer is unlikely to resolve the broader coverage issue. Consider the router’s location and whether the home needs a different coverage solution, such as an access point, mesh system, or range extender. A device-specific adapter upgrade and a home-wide coverage fix solve different problems.

- Operating system and drivers: Confirm that the adapter supports your operating system and find out whether it installs automatically or needs a driver download.
- Connection type: A USB adapter needs a suitable free port. A PCIe card needs a compatible desktop and an open slot.
- Wi-Fi standards and frequency bands: The adapter and router can use only capabilities they support in common. A newer adapter cannot deliver a newer Wi-Fi generation’s benefits if the router, computer, or software does not support them.
- Signal and placement: The adapter’s location and the quality of the signal where the computer is used affect the connection; a high specification cannot eliminate distance or obstructions.
- Operating-system version: Microsoft says Windows 11 Wi-Fi 7 support begins with version 24H2. Newer Wi-Fi and security capabilities also require compatible hardware and software. Check current documentation for your Windows version, adapter, and router; support can change.

A simple decision
- Check for built-in Wi-Fi. On Windows, inspect Device Manager under Network adapters.
- Identify the actual problem. If only this computer struggles, investigate its adapter, driver, and location. If several devices or a whole area struggle, address network coverage instead.
- Choose a form factor that fits the computer. Use USB if you want an external adapter and have a compatible port; consider PCIe for a desktop with an available slot.
- Verify compatibility. Match operating-system and driver support, Wi-Fi standards and bands, and the router’s capabilities before buying.
- Set it up according to its documentation. Some adapters install automatically; others require software or a driver. Once installed, connect the computer to the available Wi-Fi network.
