No—not by default. The Triangle Capella 2 already produces bass on its own, with a manufacturer-specified response of 42 Hz–22 kHz (±3 dB). A separate powered subwoofer is an optional upgrade for listeners who want more low-frequency weight, deeper impact or better room-specific control. The Stereo Hub 2 has a dedicated subwoofer output, and the TRIANGLE CAPELLA app provides level and crossover controls, so adding one is supported rather than improvised.
What the Capella 2 can do without a subwoofer
The Capella 2 is an active, bass-reflex speaker system. Triangle specifies a frequency response of 42 Hz–22 kHz (±3 dB) for the system. That is a manufacturer specification measured under the company’s stated conditions, not an independent in-room measurement. Your room, listening position and volume can make the practical result sound fuller or leaner than the number suggests.
A 42 Hz lower limit covers the fundamental bass of most music, television and film content. Kick drums, bass guitar, synth lines and orchestral low strings should have substantial body from the speakers themselves. The specification does not mean every seat will receive identical output at 42 Hz, nor does it promise the same level at every frequency below that point.
Because the Capella 2 is self-powered and its bass-reflex design is built into the speaker system, you do not need a subwoofer to make it a complete stereo setup. If you prefer a simpler system, have moderate bass requirements or live in a room where extra low end easily becomes boomy, using the speakers alone is a sensible configuration.

The Stereo Hub 2 is ready for expansion
The wireless and wired connections are managed through the Stereo Hub 2. Triangle provides a dedicated SUB OUT connection, so a compatible powered subwoofer can receive a signal without replacing the speakers or adding a separate preamplifier. The hub’s output is the reason a subwoofer can be integrated cleanly into the Capella 2 system rather than connected through an improvised speaker-level arrangement.
What a subwoofer changes
A subwoofer takes over the lowest portion of the program and adds a separate amplifier and driver for that range. With the Capella 2, the main benefit is not simply “more bass.” It is the ability to add bass weight independently, then adjust that contribution in the app while the speakers remain in place.
More physical impact
Listeners who watch action films, play games or listen to organ, electronic and orchestral recordings may want stronger energy below the Capella 2’s specified range. A sub can make explosions, large drums and sustained low notes feel more physical. The improvement is preference-dependent: some people want that visceral impact, while others value a tighter, less prominent balance.

Extra headroom at high volume
When the subwoofer handles the deepest bass, the Capella 2’s own drivers do not have to supply as much low-frequency excursion. In a correctly integrated system, that can make demanding passages sound less strained at elevated listening levels. The available evidence does not establish a universal amount of headroom or a measured improvement for every room, so treat this as a potential benefit rather than a guaranteed performance figure.
Room-specific adjustment
Triangle warns that low frequencies are especially sensitive to room acoustics. In a room that is too small, bass can resonate and become excessive; in a very large room, it can seem diluted. Triangle does not publish a numeric room-size cutoff, and there is no single room dimension that determines whether you need a subwoofer. Placement and listening position can matter as much as the room’s overall size.
Who should add one—and who should not
| Situation | Most sensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You mainly listen to vocals, acoustic music, podcasts and television at moderate levels. | Use the Capella 2 alone. | The speakers already provide a specified 42 Hz–22 kHz response, and a sub may add complexity without solving a problem you hear. |
| You want stronger cinematic effects, electronic sub-bass or organ-pedal weight. | Consider a powered subwoofer. | Additional low-frequency output can supply impact below the speakers’ stated range. |
| Bass sounds thin at your chair but heavy elsewhere in the room. | Experiment with placement before buying. | Room modes and seating position can create large differences that a new subwoofer may not automatically fix. |
| You want one adjustable bass source for a mixed music-and-film system. | Add a sub only after confirming the hub and app controls meet your needs. | The Stereo Hub 2 offers SUB OUT, while the app supplies level and crossover adjustment. |
| You dislike prominent or room-shaking bass. | Keep the Capella 2 as a 2.0 system. | A subwoofer is optional; adding one is not a requirement for normal operation. |
What type of subwoofer is appropriate?
The practical match is a powered subwoofer with an input compatible with the Stereo Hub 2’s SUB OUT. Triangle’s support instructions use the Thétis 340 as an example and specify an LFE cable. That example is not stated to be the only compatible model. If you choose another subwoofer, verify its input and signal requirements against the hub’s output before purchasing.

An LFE cable is the connection Triangle calls for in its setup guidance. Check the subwoofer’s manual for the correct jack: some models label a single input “LFE,” while others provide a line-level left/right input that accepts an LFE feed. Do not assume that every subwoofer or every cable arrangement will work identically; confirm the electrical input described by the manufacturer.

- Power down the equipment. Turn off the Stereo Hub 2, the Capella 2 speakers and the subwoofer before making the cable connection.
- Run the cable. Connect a compatible LFE cable from the Stereo Hub 2’s SUB OUT to the appropriate subwoofer input.
- Switch on the subwoofer. Set its power switch to on, then power up the Stereo Hub 2 and speakers.
- Open the TRIANGLE CAPELLA app. Check whether the subwoofer is detected and shown as active.
- Enable the layout if necessary. If the app does not detect the subwoofer, enable 2.1 Layout mode.
- Open Bass Management. Enable the subwoofer, adjust its output level and select a crossover frequency in this tab.
- Listen from your normal seat. Use familiar tracks and scenes, then change one control at a time so you can identify what improved or worsened the balance.
Triangle’s support guidance specifically describes detection in the app and the 2.1 Layout setting. If the sub remains unavailable after the layout is enabled, turn both units off, reseat the cable at each end and repeat the detection check before changing other settings.
How to tune the integration
Set the subwoofer’s own controls conservatively
If the subwoofer has a separate volume, phase or low-pass control, start with those controls in a neutral position recommended by its manual, then use the Capella app for the system-level adjustment. Running two independent crossover filters can create an uneven handoff, so avoid engaging an additional aggressive low-pass filter unless the subwoofer documentation requires it.

Choose a crossover by listening for a seamless handoff
The app lets you select a crossover frequency, but Triangle does not publish one universally correct value for the Capella 2. The right setting depends on the room, placement, listening distance and the subwoofer’s behavior. Raise or lower the setting gradually while listening for a smooth transition. If bass seems detached from the speakers, the crossover may be too high or the level too prominent; if the system remains thin, the setting or output may be too low.
Adjust output after the crossover
Set the crossover first, then adjust subwoofer output in Bass Management. A useful target is bass that is noticeable when you mute the sub, but not obviously coming from a box when it is active. Compare several recordings rather than tuning to one bass-heavy track. Return to the app after moving the subwoofer, because placement changes can alter the level that sounds correct.

Placement and room behavior
Low frequencies interact with walls, corners and the listening position. A subwoofer can sound powerful in one location and weak a short distance away because of room modes. The Capella 2’s own bass is subject to the same room behavior, so adding a subwoofer does not remove the need for sensible placement.

Start with practical locations
- Place the subwoofer near the front soundstage first, where its output can blend naturally with the Capella 2.
- Keep the driver and ports clear of furniture, curtains and tightly enclosed spaces.
- Do not assume a corner is automatically best; corners often increase output but can also exaggerate resonances.
- Try more than one location if bass is boomy at the seat or disappears when you move around.
These are starting strategies, not a universal placement formula. The best position is the one that produces even, controllable bass at the seats you actually use.
Troubleshooting common problems
The app does not show the subwoofer
- Confirm the LFE cable is connected to SUB OUT on the Stereo Hub 2 and to the subwoofer’s intended input.
- Verify that the subwoofer is powered on.
- Open the app and enable 2.1 Layout mode.
- Power-cycle the hub and subwoofer, then check detection again.
There is no bass from the subwoofer
- Check that the subwoofer is enabled in Bass Management.
- Raise the app’s subwoofer output slightly while playing content with known low bass.
- Confirm the subwoofer’s own gain and standby settings.
- Test another cable or input only after confirming the correct connection path.
The system sounds boomy
- Reduce subwoofer output in the app.
- Try a different placement away from a corner or strong boundary.
- Lower the crossover setting gradually and listen again.
- Check whether the room itself is creating a peak at the listening position.
The bass is weak or disappears at the seat
- Move the subwoofer and retest rather than immediately increasing its level.
- Try a different listening position if practical.
- Confirm that the subwoofer is not in standby and that Bass Management still shows it as active.
A practical decision process
- Listen to the Capella 2 alone with the music and films you use most.
- Identify a specific shortcoming: insufficient depth, insufficient impact, uneven bass or simply a preference for more weight.
- Address placement and seating before treating every bass complaint as a hardware problem.
- If you still want deeper or stronger bass, choose a powered subwoofer with a compatible input and an LFE connection path.
- Connect it through SUB OUT, enable 2.1 Layout if needed, then tune output and crossover in Bass Management.
- Keep the subwoofer only if it improves several types of content without drawing attention to its location.
The independent T3 review dated October 10, 2026, also reports the 42 Hz–22 kHz range and notes the app-based integration controls. That supports the description of the system’s capabilities, but it is not a controlled comparison proving that every listener will prefer a subwoofer.
