No—not automatically. A soundbar is an optional upgrade. Buy one when your TV’s speakers do not deliver the dialogue clarity, bass, volume or immersive presentation you want. If the TV already sounds good for your room and viewing habits, the extra hardware may not justify its cost.
Before choosing a model, check the ports on both devices, the audio formats you plan to use, cable requirements, placement and control options. Compatibility matters more than a badge or channel-count claim.
Start with the problem you want to solve
A new television does not create a universal need for an external speaker. The right question is whether its built-in audio meets your needs in the room where you watch. Evaluate the experience you actually have rather than assuming every TV sounds poor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep the TV’s speakers when they already work for you
- Dialogue is easy to understand at your normal listening level.
- You are satisfied with the amount of bass and overall fullness.
- You do not need a wider or more cinematic presentation.
- You mainly watch content where the television’s current sound is adequate.
- You would rather avoid another remote, cable and device to configure.
In this situation, a soundbar may still add features, but it is not a necessary purchase. Spend only when the improvement addresses a specific annoyance or a clearly desired capability.

Consider a soundbar when a specific shortcoming bothers you
- Speech is difficult to follow unless you raise the volume.
- You want more bass or a fuller presentation than the TV provides.
- You want a broader, more cinematic or surround-style sound field.
- You want to use a separate subwoofer or surround speakers.
- You need a particular connection or format supported by an external audio system.
These are listening goals, not guarantees about any particular television or soundbar. Read the exact specifications and, where possible, confirm how the combination behaves with your sources.
Check the connection ports before buying
Identify the audio outputs on the television and the matching input on the soundbar before comparing features. A soundbar can only use the formats and control functions that the complete connection supports.
HDMI ARC or eARC: the usual single-cable route
Look for an HDMI port on the TV labelled ARC (Audio Return Channel) or eARC. The soundbar should have a corresponding TV ARC/eARC port. When both devices support the required connection, one HDMI cable can carry television audio to the bar while leaving the rest of the system under the TV’s control.
Samsung’s Canada support guide describes this arrangement: connect the cable to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC port, choose the soundbar as the active source, and set the television’s audio output to an external speaker. The guide applies to Samsung televisions sold in Canada; menus and options can differ by model and region.
ARC uses an HDMI port for both input and output. That means the port occupied by the soundbar is not available for another HDMI device. Count the ports you need for consoles, disc players, streaming boxes or other equipment before committing to this layout.
Optical audio when ARC/eARC is unavailable
If the TV has no usable ARC/eARC connection, optical digital audio may be a fallback when both the television and soundbar provide optical ports. Sony’s support guidance identifies optical as an alternative connection for compatible equipment.

Optical is not a blanket substitute for every HDMI feature. Check the manuals for supported formats and control functions before relying on it. A connection can carry basic television audio yet fail to deliver a format or feature you planned to use.
Compare the ports in one place
| Connection | What must be present | What to verify | Potential trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | TV ARC port and soundbar TV ARC port | Supported audio formats, television audio-output setting and cable category | Uses one of the TV’s HDMI ports for audio return |
| HDMI eARC | TV eARC port and soundbar eARC-capable TV port | Exact format support across the source, TV and bar | Capabilities remain model-dependent; an eARC label alone does not establish every format |
| Optical digital | Optical output on the TV and optical input on the soundbar | Format and feature limits in both manuals | May not provide the same capabilities as an ARC/eARC path |
If a specification does not state support for the format or control feature you need, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming the connection will provide it.
Do you need HDMI eARC for Dolby Atmos?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Dolby Atmos requires compatible content and equipment along the entire signal path: the source, the content, the television, the connection and the soundbar. Dolby’s connection guidance discusses ARC/eARC paths for Atmos-enabled soundbars, but exact capabilities vary by model.
Use this chain as a compatibility checklist:
- Source: Identify where the Atmos signal originates, such as a built-in TV app or an external player.
- Content: Confirm that the program or movie actually offers the Atmos format you intend to play.
- Television: Check whether the exact TV model can pass the desired signal through its chosen output.
- Connection: Verify that the selected ARC, eARC or optical path supports that signal in this equipment combination.
- Soundbar: Confirm that the exact bar accepts and processes the intended format.
Some combinations may work over ARC, while others require eARC or a different signal route. Do not infer the answer from an “Atmos” badge on the bar alone. Read the manuals for every device and for the relevant region.
Check cables and included accessories
Cable requirements are model-specific. Samsung’s Canada setup guidance recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for its ARC/eARC connection. That recommendation is tied to the equipment and market described in its guide, so it should not be treated as a universal shopping rule.

First inspect the soundbar box and the television’s documentation. If the required cable is included, buying another one adds no benefit. If it is not included, purchase the category specified by the manuals rather than choosing by marketing language alone.

- Confirm that the cable reaches between the TV and the bar without stressing either connector.
- Use the port labels, not a visually similar HDMI socket, when connecting ARC or eARC.
- Keep the manual available in case the TV requires a particular audio-output or HDMI-control setting.
- Do not assume that an optical cable can replace an HDMI cable for every format or control function.
Set up a soundbar over HDMI ARC/eARC
The labels and menu names differ by manufacturer, but the basic sequence follows the official Samsung Canada connection procedure.
- Turn off or place both devices in standby. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong source while making the connection.
- Locate the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port. It is usually labelled directly beside the socket. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input unless the manual identifies it as the audio-return port.
- Locate the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC port. A bar may have several HDMI sockets; use the one marked for the TV connection.
- Connect the specified HDMI cable. Use the cable category recommended by the TV or soundbar manual, and check whether one is already supplied.
- Power on the TV and soundbar. Give the TV time to detect the external audio device.
- Select the soundbar’s TV or ARC/eARC source. The exact button or on-screen label depends on the bar.
- Change the television audio output to an external speaker. The setting may appear under Sound, Audio Output or a similar menu; consult the TV manual if the label differs.
- Play a known source and test dialogue, volume and format. Check both a normal TV program and any format-specific content you plan to use.
If the bar remains silent, recheck both port labels, the selected source and the television’s audio-output setting before replacing cables.
Set up an optical connection
Use optical only when both products have optical ports and the manuals confirm that it supports the audio you need.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Find the TV’s optical digital output and the soundbar’s optical input. Confirm that neither socket is merely a similar-looking service or analog connection.
- Remove protective caps if the cable has them. Keep the ends clean and aligned; optical connectors fit only one way.
- Connect the cable between the two labelled ports. Do not force the plug.
- Choose Optical or Digital Audio on the soundbar. The source name varies by model.
- Set the TV’s audio output to optical or external audio. Use the setting described in the television manual.
- Test ordinary programming first. Then verify any surround or object-based format separately, because optical support is not identical across devices.
If the television has an optical output but the bar does not, or vice versa, this route cannot be used without additional equipment. An adapter should not be assumed to preserve every format or control feature.
Match features to your actual priorities
More hardware is not automatically better in your room. Compare the features below against the problem you are trying to solve.
| Your priority | Features to compare | Questions to ask | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clearer dialogue | Dialogue-focused processing, voice controls and independent adjustment options stated by the manufacturer | Can speech be adjusted without making effects uncomfortably loud? Does the TV connection support the control method? | Extra processing can change the balance of music and effects |
| More bass | Bar’s stated low-frequency capability and whether a separate subwoofer is included or supported | Is the subwoofer part of the package, optional or unsupported? Is there space and power for it? | Additional equipment increases placement and setup demands |
| Wider or surround-style sound | Surround speakers, processing modes and channel configuration | Are rear speakers included? Does the content and connection support the mode? | Virtual or multi-speaker effects depend on room, placement and source |
| Dolby Atmos | Atmos support on the bar and the complete signal path | Can the TV, source, content and connection pass the intended Atmos signal? | An Atmos label alone does not guarantee the desired result |
| Simple operation | HDMI ARC/eARC control, included remote and stated TV integration | Can you change volume and source without juggling several controls? | Using ARC/eARC occupies a TV HDMI port |
| Music playback | Supported inputs and playback features listed for the exact model | Will the connection and controls suit your music sources? | Music features may add cost without helping TV dialogue |
When two models appear similar, compare their stated connections, supported formats, dimensions, controls and complete package contents. Do not use channel count or a feature name as a substitute for compatibility information.

Plan placement before ordering
Measure the space where the bar will sit and compare those dimensions with the manufacturer’s specifications. Check the width and height of the area in front of the TV, the location of the TV stand and any clearance restrictions described in the manuals.
A separate subwoofer or rear speakers require additional locations and power connections. Decide whether you are willing to accommodate those pieces before paying for a package that includes them. If you want a simple dialogue upgrade, a basic bar may meet the goal with less equipment.
Also consider access to controls. A bar that relies on a particular source button or television audio-output setting may be inconvenient if the remote is misplaced or if household members use different inputs. Confirm the controls supplied with the model and how they interact with the TV.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the manuals for model and region differences
Connection names, menu paths, included cables and supported formats can change between models and markets. Samsung’s guide explicitly refers to televisions sold in Canada and notes that options can differ by model or region. Sony’s optical guidance likewise applies to the equipment covered by its support documentation.
Before purchase, download or view the manuals for the exact TV and soundbar. Verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- The location and label of the audio port.
- The cable category and whether a cable is included.
- The audio formats accepted by the soundbar and passed by the TV.
- The television setting required to route sound externally.
- Whether the chosen connection supports the controls and features you want.
- The physical dimensions and power requirements for every component.
If the product page uses broad language such as “supports surround” or “Atmos ready,” look for the detailed format and connection table. If a needed value is not stated, ask the manufacturer or treat it as unverified.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
No sound after connecting HDMI
- Confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC port.
- Check that the soundbar source is set to TV, ARC or eARC rather than another input.
- Set the TV audio output to an external speaker.
- Turn both devices off, reconnect the cable firmly and power them on again.
- Consult both manuals for HDMI-control or audio-format settings.
No sound over optical
- Verify that both devices have the required optical ports.
- Confirm that the cable is fully seated and that any protective caps were removed.
- Select Optical or Digital Audio on the soundbar.
- Choose the TV’s optical or external-audio output setting.
- Check whether the selected TV audio format is supported by the soundbar over optical.
Ordinary programs work but a desired format does not
This usually indicates a format or path mismatch rather than a dead cable. Recheck the source, content, TV pass-through capability, connection and soundbar support as a chain. Test with content known to carry the format and follow the exact model manuals.
The soundbar works but another HDMI device no longer fits
ARC uses an HDMI port for audio return, so reassess the TV’s remaining inputs. You may need to move another device, connect it through the soundbar if the manuals support that arrangement, or choose a different audio route.
Examples of sensible buying decisions
You only want easier dialogue
Start with a simple bar whose connection matches the TV. Prioritize dialogue controls, straightforward volume operation and a size that fits the stand. There is no need to pay for surround speakers or Atmos if those features do not solve your problem.
You want a cinema-style setup
Check for the desired surround or Atmos support, then verify the complete signal path before purchase. Include the space and power needs of a subwoofer or rear speakers in the decision, not just the bar’s headline specification.
Your TV has no HDMI ARC/eARC
Look for optical ports on both devices and read the format limitations first. If optical cannot carry a feature you consider essential, choose equipment with a compatible connection rather than assuming an adapter will provide it.
You have several HDMI sources
Count the TV’s available HDMI inputs after reserving the ARC/eARC port. Confirm how the soundbar handles additional sources, if applicable, and make sure the final arrangement does not force you to unplug devices.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the specific problem: dialogue, bass, width, immersion or control convenience.
- Record the TV’s available audio outputs and HDMI port labels.
- Record the soundbar’s TV input and supported audio formats.
- Confirm the source and content formats you actually plan to use.
- Verify whether ARC, eARC or optical supports those formats in this combination.
- Check the recommended cable category and box contents.
- Measure the bar’s placement area and plan locations for any additional speakers.
- Compare controls, dimensions, package contents and total price—not just channel count.
- Read the exact TV and soundbar manuals for your country or region.
Bottom line
A soundbar is worthwhile when it fixes a problem you can identify or adds an experience you genuinely want; it is not a compulsory accessory for a new TV. Decide first what you want to improve, then confirm ports, formats, cables, placement and controls on the exact products. HDMI ARC/eARC is a convenient route when both devices support it, optical can serve as a fallback when available, and Dolby Atmos only works as intended when every link in the signal path is compatible.
