No. Sonos Arc Ultra works as a soundbar on its own; a Sub and Era speakers are optional additions for different goals. A Sub adds deeper bass, while a pair of Era speakers supplies rear surround channels. You can start with Arc Ultra and add either component later through the Sonos app.
What each add-on does
| Setup | What it adds | Consider it if |
|---|---|---|
| Arc Ultra alone | Soundbar-based TV audio | You want to begin with the soundbar and decide about expansion later. Sonos’s setup instructions allow add-ons after the home theater speaker is set up. Sonos setup guide. |
| Arc Ultra + Sub | Deeper bass | Stronger low-frequency impact matters to you. Sonos describes Sub as a way to add deeper bass. Sonos home theater products. |
| Arc Ultra + two Era 100 speakers | Rear surround channels | You want a pair of compact rear speakers. Sonos lists an Arc Ultra and Era 100 surround set that does not include a Sub. Sonos Era 100 surround set. |
| Arc Ultra + two Era 300 speakers | Rear surrounds; Era 300 is described by Sonos as a spatial-audio speaker | You are considering that speaker type and have room for a pair. Sonos lists an Arc Ultra and Era 300 surround set. Sonos Era 300 surround set. |
| Arc Ultra + Sub + two Era speakers | Deeper bass and rear surrounds | You want both functions and can place the surround pair appropriately. Sonos offers sets with Era 100 or Era 300 speakers; that listing is not an independent test of performance or value. |
Should you add a Sub?
Choose a Sub for bass, not for rear-channel coverage. It is optional: Arc Ultra can be set up and used before you decide whether you want the additional low-frequency output. The exact compatible configurations Sonos documents are two Sub 4 units, two Sub (Gen 3) units, or one of each. Sonos Sub setup guide.
For a new home theater system, Sonos says to set up the home theater speaker first, then use the app to guide Sub setup. The Sub connects wirelessly to its primary Sonos product and should be in the same room.

Should you add Era surrounds?
Choose Era speakers if you want sound from behind the listening position. Sonos calls for a pair of surround speakers, placed behind and to the left and right of the usual listening position. If there is no practical place for that pair, surrounds may not suit your room. Sonos surround guidelines.

Sonos recommends Arc Ultra + Sub 4 + two Era 100 speakers for medium-to-large rooms, and Arc Ultra + Sub 4 + two Era 300 speakers for large rooms. These are Sonos’s recommendations, not independent comparative test results; they do not establish that every room needs a Sub or that Era 300 is universally better than Era 100. What to check before expanding
Atmos depends on the TV connection and content
Adding Era speakers does not by itself make Dolby Atmos available. Sonos says Arc Ultra must connect to the TV’s HDMI-ARC input, and a compatible TV plus supported Atmos content and service are also required. Sonos Arc Ultra setup guide.

Wired Era surrounds have a limitation
For Era 100 or Era 300 surrounds using a Sonos Combo Adapter, Ethernet use depends on how the primary home theater speaker connects: if it uses Wi-Fi, the Era surrounds cannot use Ethernet; if the home theater speaker is wired, the Era speakers may also use Ethernet.
