To set up a SmartThings hub, add it in the SmartThings app from Devices > Add (+), then follow the pairing route for your hub model. After the hub is online, add compatible devices separately. You may not need a hub at all: some SmartThings devices connect directly to the app, while Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub.
Before you start: check whether you need a hub
SmartThings supports some devices that connect directly to the app, but Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub. Check Menu > Supported devices in the SmartThings app for regional support for your device before buying a hub or beginning setup. Compatibility can depend on the device, hub model, software, and region.
- If you already own a supported hub, check whether it supports the protocols and devices you plan to use before purchasing another.
- If you plan to use a Matter device over Thread, confirm that your controller also provides Thread Border Router capability.
- Some cloud-connected devices link through the manufacturer’s service rather than pairing directly with the hub; SmartThings handles these under Linked Services.
Add the hub to the SmartThings app
- Install the SmartThings app and sign in with a Samsung account. SmartThings setup guidance covers the account and app starting point.
- Power on the hub and put it in pairing mode if required. Follow the instructions for your exact hub model for power, network connection, and pairing mode; these details are not universal.
- In the app, open Devices and tap Add (+). Choose Scan QR Code if the hub has a QR code, Scan Nearby if it is ready for nearby discovery, or choose the Samsung/Partner Devices option and select the model.
- Follow the manufacturer’s prompts, wait for the app to finish adding the hub, then tap Done. The 2015 SmartThings Hub uses a special onboarding route because it has no QR setup.
App labels and available setup routes may vary by release, hub model, and region. Use the hub manufacturer’s model-specific directions if the app’s prompts do not match.
Add compatible devices after the hub is set up
Adding a hub does not automatically add the devices in your home. Add each device separately through Devices > Add (+). Depending on the device, you can scan its QR code, scan nearby devices, or choose its brand and model from the device list. Put the device into pairing mode using its manufacturer’s instructions; the steps differ by device.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
For cloud-connected products, check Menu > Linked Services in the app and connect the manufacturer’s service if SmartThings requires it. These products may not use the same local pairing flow as Zigbee or Z-Wave devices.
Matter devices: check controller and Thread support
Matter onboarding has additional compatibility and software requirements. SmartThings identifies the 2018 SmartThings Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Matter controllers in its Matter setup guidance. Verify your model and current software support before pairing.

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
To add a Matter device, scan its QR code in the app or enter its setup code, then select the hub and room when prompted. A Matter-over-Thread device may also prompt you to choose a Thread network. It needs a Matter controller with a Thread Border Router: the 2015 SmartThings Hub does not include one, so Thread devices need a separate compatible Thread Border Router.
If setup or pairing fails
Matter device will not onboard
- Confirm a compatible Matter controller is already set up.
- Put the device in pairing mode and keep it within range during setup.
- Make sure the device QR code is visible to the app; if scanning fails, enter the setup code instead.
- Reset the device according to its manufacturer’s instructions, then restart the SmartThings app and try again.
These checks follow SmartThings’ Matter troubleshooting guidance.

Z-Wave device will not connect after repeated attempts
SmartThings advises running Z-Wave exclusion from the hub settings, then physically confirming exclusion at the device—typically by pressing a device button—before trying to add it again. Follow the device maker’s instructions for the exact button sequence. See SmartThings hub guidance.
Do not remove the hub as a routine retry
Removing a hub restores its factory settings and permanently deletes associated device connections, Routines, configurations, and Services. Devices may need to be reset or excluded before they can be connected again. Try model-specific troubleshooting first; consult SmartThings’ hub removal guidance before taking that step.
