Usually, no. Most Android phones can identify suspected spam, block numbers, and—in some models and countries—screen unknown callers without installing another app. Start with the controls in your existing Google or Samsung dialer. Consider a separate blocker only if those controls are unavailable, still let too many unwanted calls through, or lack a specific feature you need.
No service catches every robocall. Caller-ID spoofing, incomplete databases, and false positives mean that the best setup is usually layered: enable the phone’s own protection, use voicemail and call history to check uncertain calls, then add carrier or third-party filtering only when there is a clear gap.
What Android can do without another app
The exact controls depend on your dialer, phone model, Android release, carrier, and country. The common built-in tools are caller-ID warnings, spam labels, manual blocking, reporting a call as spam, automatic filtering, and call screening.

Google’s Phone app is listed for most Android devices running Android 9.0 or later and includes caller ID and spam protection. A phone may still use a manufacturer or carrier dialer instead, so the menus below may not appear exactly as written.

Set up Google Phone’s spam protection
If your phone uses Phone by Google, configure the controls before shopping for another app.
- Open the Phone app. Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Open Caller ID and spam. Turn on See caller ID and spam. This allows the dialer to identify businesses and warn you about likely spam.
- Turn on Filter spam calls if the option is available. Google says filtered calls are kept in your call history, but they do not produce a missed-call or voicemail notification.
- Check Call Screen. On supported Pixel phones, open the Call Screen settings and review automatic-screening choices. Spam autoblocking may be offered, but the choices depend on the phone and region.
- Review a suspicious call. In Recents, open the call details. Use Block or Report spam when appropriate.
Google states that numbers outside your contacts may be sent to Google to identify a business caller or determine whether a call is spam. Google says it does not obtain phone numbers from your Contacts list for this purpose. If that data handling is unacceptable, leave the feature off and rely on manual blocking, voicemail, carrier controls, or a service whose privacy terms you have reviewed.
What filtering looks like in practice
A filtered call may never ring. Because it also does not create a voicemail notification, check the Phone app’s call history periodically if you are concerned about a legitimate caller being classified incorrectly. Add important organizations, doctors, schools, delivery services, and family members to your contacts, but do not assume that every unwanted call will use a number outside your address book.

Set up spam protection on a Samsung Galaxy
Compatible Galaxy phones integrate Samsung’s Smart Call and spam-protection controls into the Samsung Phone app. Samsung documents an option to block spam and scam calls, while noting that support depends on the Galaxy model and software.

- Open the Phone app and tap the three-dot menu.
- Open Settings and look for Caller ID and spam protection, Smart Call, or similarly named options.
- Enable caller identification and the setting that blocks or warns about spam and scam calls, if your device offers it.
- Use the call-log action to block or report numbers that get through.
Samsung’s labels and switch locations can change with One UI versions, carrier firmware, model, and region. If you cannot find Smart Call, install available system and Phone-app updates, then check the support page for your exact model. The FCC describes Smart Call as a manufacturer solution that labels potentially unwanted calls and lets users block or report them; it is not a guarantee that all unwanted calls will be stopped.
Why a separate app is not automatically better
A third-party blocker may have a larger or more specialized database, but it does not remove the underlying problems. Caller IDs can be spoofed, newly used numbers may not yet be classified, and a legitimate call can resemble a robocall. The FTC specifically warns that call-labeling can still allow shady calls through and that spoofed numbers can defeat blocking technology.
Android 11 (API level 30) and later support STIR/SHAKEN caller-number authentication. The default caller-ID and spam app can access the authentication verdict, which may help distinguish calls whose displayed number was validated by the network. Authentication does not prove that the caller is trustworthy, and it does not ensure that every unwanted call is blocked.

Adding an app can also increase access to sensitive data. Depending on its design, a blocker may request permission to manage calls, read call logs, access contacts, display over other apps, or become the default dialer. Those permissions may be necessary for real-time screening, but they give the provider more visibility into who calls you and when.

When installing another blocker makes sense
Escalate only after you have tested the native controls. A separate app is reasonable in these situations:
- Your phone’s dialer has no caller-ID or spam-filtering option, or the feature is disabled by the manufacturer or carrier.
- Spam calls continue to disrupt you after warnings, filtering, manual reports, and voicemail are configured.
- You need rules the stock dialer does not provide, such as blocking number ranges, applying different rules to contacts and non-contacts, or routing unknown callers through a screening workflow.
- You need a specialized reporting, household, business, or call-log workflow and accept the additional permissions.
- Your carrier’s network filter and the phone’s on-device filter leave a documented gap that a carefully selected app can fill.
Do not make an app the default dialer merely because it advertises a large database. Use that setting only when the app’s screening behavior and controls justify the broader access and the inconvenience of changing your calling interface.
How to evaluate a third-party blocker
Compare products using evidence you can inspect rather than an advertised blocking percentage. No authoritative source establishes a directly comparable effectiveness rate for Android spam blockers.

Install from the official Google Play store, read the privacy policy before granting access, and test the app with known safe callers. If it blocks an expected call, use its allowlist or disable automatic blocking rather than assuming the caller will try again.

Use your carrier as a second layer
Many mobile carriers offer network-level call labeling or blocking. Network filtering can complement on-device controls because it operates before a call reaches the phone, but features, prices, supported countries, and plan eligibility vary. Check your carrier account or support page for its current call-filtering option and whether it is included in your plan.
A carrier service can be useful when spam arrives even while the phone is offline, when several family lines need one policy, or when you want filtering managed outside the handset. It can also produce its own false positives, so look for an allowlist, appeal process, or call history before enabling aggressive blocking.
A practical decision path
- Identify the dialer. Determine whether calls are handled by Phone by Google, Samsung Phone, or another manufacturer or carrier app.
- Enable warnings first. Turn on caller ID and spam warnings, then observe what is labeled without immediately blocking every unknown number.
- Enable filtering or screening. Use Google’s Filter spam calls or supported Call Screen, or Samsung’s spam and scam blocking, if offered.
- Keep voicemail as a safety valve. Let uncertain callers leave a message and inspect call history for filtered calls or false positives.
- Report accurately. Mark genuine spam in the call log and unblock legitimate numbers. Accurate feedback improves your own list and may inform the provider’s database.
- Update the phone. Install Android, dialer, and carrier updates; spam databases and authentication support depend on current software.
- Check the carrier. Compare its network filter with the controls already enabled on the phone.
- Escalate selectively. Install a third-party blocker only if the remaining problem is specific and measurable, then audit its permissions, privacy terms, controls, ratings, updates, and subscription.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
The spam setting is missing
Confirm which Phone app is the default, update it and Android, and check whether your model, carrier, and country support the feature. Google Phone’s availability is broad on Android 9.0 and later, but individual features such as Call Screen are more restricted. On Galaxy phones, Smart Call support is model- and software-dependent.

Make sure the filtering switch—not just caller-ID warnings—is enabled. Add manual blocks for repeat numbers, report calls from the Recents list, and check the carrier’s network option. Expect some calls to bypass every layer when the caller spoofs a number or uses a newly assigned one.

A legitimate call was filtered
Open call history, identify the number, unblock or allow it, and add it to contacts. If the call was filtered without a voicemail notification, tell important callers to leave a message through another channel or call from a known number. Reduce filtering aggressiveness if your work or medical calls are frequently misclassified.
The blocker asks for excessive access
Stop before granting permission. Read the app’s explanation and privacy policy, compare it with a carrier or built-in alternative, and uninstall it if its data access is disproportionate to the feature you need. Recheck default-dialer and call-management settings after removal.

For most people, Android’s built-in protections are the right starting point and often the complete solution. A separate app is an escalation choice—not a requirement—and should earn its place by solving a problem your phone and carrier controls demonstrably do not.
