The Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter BR400 was designed to let a Schlage Sense BE479 deadbolt connect to Wi-Fi for remote app control. It is not a general-purpose Wi-Fi bridge, and Schlage now lists both products as discontinued. More importantly, Schlage’s September 2026 support guidance says the Sense’s Wi-Fi and remote-access features are unavailable, while other Schlage pages still describe BR400 setup and troubleshooting. Treat current remote operation as uncertain and confirm your specific setup with Schlage before relying on it.
What the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter does
The BR400 provides a Wi-Fi connection path for the Schlage Sense BE479 deadbolt. The adapter is required for the Sense’s documented Wi-Fi setup; without it, owners can still pair the discontinued lock to the Schlage Home app by Bluetooth, but that is local control rather than Wi-Fi remote access. Schlage’s Sense Works With page identifies BR400 for the BE479.
Schlage’s original adapter manual describes the intended result: “After setting up the Wi-Fi Adapter, you can use the Schlage Sense app to control your lock from anywhere.” That explains why the adapter was made, not a guarantee that remote service remains available today.
Does BR400 remote access still work?
Schlage’s current guidance is inconsistent. Its support article updated September 2, 2026 says the discontinued BE479 can pair with Schlage Home locally but that Wi-Fi and remote-access features are unavailable. Meanwhile, Schlage continues to publish BR400 pairing instructions and a Wi-Fi troubleshooting page for the discontinued Sense setup. Those instructions do not establish that the service is currently operational for every owner or configuration.

Schlage says the Sense and its Wi-Fi adapter were discontinued in July 2020. Given the conflicting support material, do not buy a used BR400 on the assumption it will restore remote access, and do not depend on an existing setup for access away from home without confirming it with Schlage.
How to set up a BR400 you already own
Schlage’s published pairing flow calls for adding the adapter in the Schlage Home app. The current instructions are useful as a reference for existing equipment, but following them does not resolve the uncertainty about remote service.

- In the Schlage Home app, choose the option to add the Wi-Fi adapter and scan the QR code on the BR400.
- Plug in the adapter and follow the app prompt to connect your phone to the adapter’s temporary network.
- Select your home wireless network in the app and enter its password.
- Place the adapter no more than approximately 15 feet from the BE479 lock, as Schlage recommends.

- Try a soft reset of the adapter, following Schlage’s published troubleshooting steps.
- If app behavior remains problematic, Schlage’s guidance includes reinstalling the app.
- Check the router’s dual-band configuration. Schlage’s instructions call out 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network considerations; confirm your network setup meets the app’s prompts.
- Move the adapter closer to the lock, keeping it within the recommended approximately 15-foot distance.
See Schlage’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting instructions. A successful local pairing or a troubleshooting step completing is not proof that remote access is currently available.
Should you keep Sense and BR400 or choose another lock?

Schlage describes the Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt and its Encode WiFi FAQs separately from Sense. The Encode is an alternative lock, not a way to add built-in Wi-Fi to a BE479.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and HomeKit are different capabilities
Bluetooth pairing lets the BE479 connect locally to Schlage Home; it does not mean the lock has internet access for remote control. BR400 was intended to supply the separate Wi-Fi path. Schlage’s current article on the discontinued Sense also says the lock is no longer supported by Apple HomeKit. If HomeKit compatibility is important, check Schlage’s current Sense support notice and verify a replacement’s platform support before buying.
