No. You can use the Samsung HW-Q990H with a non-Samsung television as a conventional soundbar system through HDMI eARC/ARC or another supported connection. However, Samsung’s Q-Symphony feature—which combines the TV’s speakers with the soundbar—requires a compatible Samsung TV and compatible Samsung audio equipment.
The important distinction is between sending TV audio to the HW-Q990H and adding the TV speakers to a synchronized system. Your exact television model, market and connection determine whether Q-Symphony appears and how it operates.
What “getting the most” from the HW-Q990H actually means
The HW-Q990H is Samsung’s 2026 Q-series 11.1.4-channel home-theater system, supplied with a subwoofer and rear speakers. Its core job—receiving audio from a television and driving the soundbar system—does not depend on the television being made by Samsung. HDMI eARC is a standard TV-to-soundbar audio route, and Samsung documents eARC separately from Q-Symphony.
There are therefore two different ownership goals:
- Use the HW-Q990H for TV sound: connect the television by eARC/ARC, optical or another supported source and select the correct audio output.
- Use Q-Symphony: let the TV speakers and the compatible Samsung soundbar play together. This is Samsung-device integration, not a universal HDMI feature.
Q-Symphony can be worthwhile if you specifically want the television’s speakers participating in the sound field. The official specifications establish the feature and supported configurations, but they do not provide a controlled listening test proving that every room or listener will hear a particular improvement.

What Q-Symphony does—and what it does not do
Samsung defines Q-Symphony as technology that “plays sound from your TV speakers and compatible soundbars or wireless speakers simultaneously, delivering an immersive surround sound experience.” The TV and audio device coordinate playback rather than the soundbar simply replacing the television speakers.
Because the television has to participate in that coordination, Q-Symphony is limited to supported Samsung TV and audio-device combinations. Connecting the HW-Q990H to a television over eARC does not, by itself, create Q-Symphony. eARC carries audio; Q-Symphony controls a Samsung-specific combined-speaker mode.
Samsung’s 2026 Q-Symphony update also describes configurations of up to five sound devices. That is a product/configuration capability, not a promise that every TV, soundbar generation or room can use five devices together. Older, non-2026 sound devices may run in a legacy compatibility mode with limited performance.

That table is a Singapore-market guide, not a guarantee for every country or every television carrying a similar series name. Samsung explicitly warns that support can depend on the model or region and that the feature may not be supported in some cases. See Samsung Singapore’s Q-Symphony compatibility guidance for the local exceptions.
A Samsung Australia 2026 HW-Q990H retailer specification sheet gives a different scope: Samsung TVs from 2022 through 2026, excluding The Serif and The Sero. That narrower statement should not be merged with the Singapore table or treated as a universal rule. Regional product pages can define compatibility differently.
The practical rule is simple: check the full model number of your television against the Q-Symphony support page and the HW-Q990H product page for the country where you will use it. Do not rely only on the TV’s brand, an approximate purchase year or a series name shared across regions.
How to check your exact TV before buying
- Find the complete TV model number in the television’s Settings > Support > About section, on its label or on the original invoice.
- Open the Samsung support page for your country and search for Q-Symphony compatibility.
- Check both the TV model and the HW-Q990H model sold in that market. Confirm that the page names Q-Symphony, not merely HDMI ARC/eARC.
- Look for exclusions, regional notes and firmware requirements. A model-year family can contain variants with different support.
- If the local information conflicts with a global product page, use the local support documentation or ask Samsung support with both full model numbers.
This verification matters especially for older televisions and for sets imported from another region. A television can accept sound over eARC while still lacking the software integration needed for Q-Symphony.

Setting up Q-Symphony on a supported Samsung TV
Samsung’s menus vary by TV generation, but the following path is the example given in its Q-Symphony 4.0 instructions:
- Connect the HW-Q990H to the television. For an eARC connection, use the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar’s HDMI input labeled for TV eARC/ARC.
- On the TV, open Settings > All Settings > Sound > Q-Symphony Setup.
- Select the HW-Q990H or the detected compatible speaker, then apply the setting.
- Choose the soundbar as the active audio device when prompted and play a source to confirm that the combined mode is engaged.
The labels can differ by year and region, so treat that path as a guide rather than a universal screenshot. Samsung Canada’s 2024 instructions also describe HDMI and optical connections; for a 2024-or-newer soundbar connected by HDMI or optical, the TV may require the ARC/eARC source to be selected.
For eARC on supported Samsung TVs, enable HDMI-CEC (Samsung calls it Anynet+) and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto. Use the appropriate ARC/eARC port and a compatible HDMI cable. Samsung’s eARC explanation is available at Samsung’s eARC support page.

These are related but separate operations: eARC establishes the audio path, while the Q-Symphony menu enables the synchronized TV-speaker mode. Activating eARC alone will not make Q-Symphony appear.

- SPACE-SAVING DESIGN: The sleek soundbar mounts easily on a wall or sits neatly on an entertainment center, keeping your setup clean and organized.
Using the HW-Q990H with a non-Samsung TV
A non-Samsung TV can still be a sensible match when your priority is the HW-Q990H’s soundbar, subwoofer and rear-speaker system rather than Samsung’s combined-speaker feature. Connect the TV using the output it supports:
- HDMI eARC: preferred when both devices support it; it can carry TV audio formats through the HDMI link.
- HDMI ARC: suitable for televisions with the older ARC standard, subject to the formats and controls supported by that TV.
- Optical: useful when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable, although it has different format and control limitations.
Set the television’s audio output to the connected soundbar or receiver, then select the corresponding source on the HW-Q990H. TV-brand menus, remote-control behavior, supported formats and lip-sync controls vary, so consult the television maker’s instructions for the exact model.
What you should not expect is the Samsung Q-Symphony setup entry or synchronized use of the non-Samsung TV’s built-in speakers. The soundbar can receive the TV’s audio without the TV being a Samsung model; the integrated mode is the part that is restricted.

| Question | Samsung TV confirmed for Q-Symphony | Non-Samsung TV or unsupported Samsung model |
|---|---|---|
| Can the HW-Q990H play TV audio? | Yes, through a supported audio connection. | Yes, through a supported audio connection. |
| Can the TV speakers and soundbar operate together through Q-Symphony? | Only when the exact TV/audio combination is supported in that region. | No Q-Symphony integration. |
| What must be checked? | Full TV model, local support list, connection and menu availability. | TV output type, supported audio formats and control compatibility. |
| Is a Samsung TV mandatory to own the soundbar? | No. | No. |
Choose the first path only if the synchronized TV-speaker feature is important enough to verify the exact model. Choose the second when you mainly want a surround system and your television already provides a reliable eARC, ARC or optical output.

Troubleshooting Q-Symphony and eARC problems
The Q-Symphony option is missing
- Confirm that the TV’s full model number appears on the local compatibility information, rather than assuming a similar model in the same series qualifies.
- Check that the HW-Q990H is connected and powered before opening the Q-Symphony menu.
- Use the TV’s ARC/eARC port and select the soundbar as the active audio output.
- Install available TV and soundbar firmware updates, then restart both devices.
- Review regional exclusions; Samsung states that support can vary by model or region.
The soundbar works but the TV speakers do not join
This usually indicates that the ordinary audio link is functioning while the Q-Symphony mode is not enabled or is unsupported. Recheck the Q-Symphony Setup menu and the exact model eligibility. Do not infer compatibility merely because the TV sends sound over eARC.
There is no TV audio over eARC
- Verify that the HDMI cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC socket, not a standard HDMI input.
- Enable HDMI-CEC/Anynet+ and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto where those controls exist.
- Select the ARC/eARC source on the TV or soundbar as required by the model’s instructions.
- If the TV has no working ARC/eARC path, test optical output as an alternative and select the optical source.
Performance is inconsistent with older equipment
Samsung says that when older, non-2026 sound devices are included, Q-Symphony can operate in legacy compatibility mode and performance may be limited. That qualification applies to the equipment combination, so check the local documentation rather than assuming every advertised multi-device configuration behaves identically.
What the official specifications do—and do not—promise
Samsung’s US product listing identifies the HW-Q990H as a 2026 11.1.4-channel system with a subwoofer and rear speakers and lists both eARC and Q-Symphony. Those are capability and configuration claims. They do not establish a guaranteed sound-quality increase, a universal compatibility year or a particular result in every room.
For a purchase decision, treat Q-Symphony as a bonus integration feature that requires verification. Treat eARC, ARC or optical connectivity as the basic compatibility question. Separating those two decisions prevents an otherwise suitable television from being rejected—or an incompatible model from being bought—based on the wrong assumption.
