No subscription is required for basic live use of a Ring doorbell or camera. Ring says you can open Live View and respond to alerts as they happen without a Ring Protect plan. You do need a subscription to review recorded video later; without a plan, Ring does not save videos or photos for later viewing.
That makes the decision straightforward: pay for a plan if you need video history, richer alerts, or professional monitoring. If you only check a live feed and react to notifications in the moment, the no-plan functionality may be enough.
What a Ring device does without a subscription
Live video remains available
Ring’s subscription FAQ says, “No. Your Ring products provide certain features without a plan.” The main feature is live access: you can view what the doorbell or camera sees when you open Live View. Ring also says users can respond to alerts as they happen.

Recorded history is not included
Without an active plan, Ring says videos and photos are not saved for later review. If you miss an alert, close the app, or want to investigate an event from earlier in the day, there is no Ring cloud recording to open afterward. A no-plan setup is therefore live-only rather than a surveillance archive.
What a Ring Protect plan adds
Recorded video and event history
A Ring Protect subscription is the gateway to recorded-video review. Ring says motion-event recordings can remain in cloud storage for up to 180 days, although the account’s storage setting can make the retention period shorter. The 180-day figure is a stated maximum, not a guarantee that every account or event will remain available for that entire period.
Recording starts only after an eligible trial or paid subscription is active. Events that occurred before coverage began are not retroactively added to your history.

Ring’s plan descriptions include smart alerts for supported devices, extended Live View, and device modes. Higher tiers add intelligent features and, for eligible configurations, features such as Pro Intelligence. “Supported” and “eligible” matter: the same plan name does not guarantee that every doorbell or camera receives every feature.
Ring’s current plan information also lists search and other intelligent capabilities on higher tiers. Treat these as device- and region-dependent benefits and verify compatibility in your account before subscribing for a specific feature.

Alarm and professional monitoring options
The highest displayed tier, Virtual Security Guard, adds live video monitoring and deterrence by security professionals. Monitoring services can have separate compatibility, jurisdiction, language, and geographic requirements. An alarm setup and a camera-only setup should not be assumed to have identical benefits.

How to choose the right level of coverage
Choose no plan if live-only use meets your needs
- You normally watch Live View while an event is occurring.
- You can respond to notifications immediately.
- You do not need to prove what happened after the event.
- You are comfortable with there being no saved video or photo history.
For this use case, start with the device alone and test live access and alert response at the location where it is installed.
Choose Solo for one covered device
Solo is designed for one home doorbell or camera. It is the narrowest paid option when your priority is recorded event history for a single device. Adding a second device at the same address may make Multi more economical, depending on the current prices and features shown in your account.

- Capture it all with Retinal 4K video — See your home or business in the ultimate clarity with Retinal 4K.
- Zoom in up to 10x — Catch details at a distance with up to 10x Enhanced Zoom.
- See, hear and speak to visitors on camera — With Live View & Two-Way Talk with Audio+, you’ll be able to interact with who’s there in real time, right from your phone.
- Tailored detection for more exact alerts — 3D Motion Detection pinpoints motion on your property so you’ll receive more precise alerts and fewer interruptions.
- True color, even in low light — With Low-Light Sight, just a little ambient light gives you true color video. In total darkness, your camera switches to crisp black-and-white to keep details sharp.
Choose Multi for several devices at one address
Multi covers all Ring devices at one location. It avoids buying a separate one-device plan for every camera in the same home. “One location” is important: devices installed at separate addresses are not automatically combined under one Multi subscription.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Pro for higher-tier features
Pro covers all devices at one location and is the tier Ring associates with additional intelligent features. It is the relevant comparison when you want more than basic recording and alerts, but do not need the professional monitoring service in Virtual Security Guard.
Choose Virtual Security Guard for professional intervention
The $99 monthly tier is for customers who specifically want live video monitoring and deterrence by security professionals. Confirm that your address, devices, language, and local jurisdiction qualify before paying for monitoring.
Trials, new devices, and location rules
How the free trial works
Ring’s U.S. plan information says an eligible setup generally starts a free 30-day Ring Protect trial after you set up a doorbell, camera, or alarm, unless an existing subscription already covers that location. The offer is generally tied to new or certified refurbished compatible devices; accessories are excluded. Retail promotions can differ from the standard offer.
If you add devices to an active Multi or Pro plan at the same location, Ring says those devices are covered automatically. A device at another address does not receive that automatic coverage.

Separate addresses need separate coverage
Plan coverage is based on the location, not simply the number of devices in your account. A Multi or Pro plan can cover all eligible devices at one location, while a second home, office, or rental property normally requires its own plan. Review the address attached to each device before assuming it is covered.
What happens when a trial or subscription ends
Ring says stored recordings are lost when a trial or paid plan ends without renewal, and those recordings cannot be retrieved. This is the most important cancellation consequence: downloading or otherwise preserving any video you may need must happen before coverage expires.
- Open your Ring account’s subscription or plan-management area in the Ring app or on Ring’s website.
- Check which location and devices are listed as covered.
- Before canceling, review the event history and save any footage that may be needed for insurance, a delivery dispute, or a security report.
- Confirm the effective end date shown by Ring and whether cancellation stops renewal immediately or at the end of the paid term.
- After expiration, test Live View and alert response so you know which live functions remain available without recording.
Do not treat a cancellation confirmation as a backup. Once the plan ends, Ring’s stated policy is that stored recordings cannot be recovered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Standard event storage versus 24/7 Continuous Recording
Motion-event history
The ordinary plan benefit is event recording triggered by motion or another supported event. Ring states that these recordings may be stored for up to 180 days, with the actual duration controlled by account settings and eligibility.
24/7 Continuous Recording
Ring lists 24/7 Continuous Recording as a separate add-on for eligible cameras and plans. It uses temporary cloud storage for up to 14 days. That 14-day period is not an alternative description of the standard 180-day motion-event history; the two services have different recording models, eligibility rules, and retention periods.
Best Value
- AI-Powered Smart Detection: Advanced AI technology accurately identifies people while filtering out vehicles and animals, so you only get the alerts that matter most
- Secure Cloud Storage: Protect your recordings with AES-128 encrypted cloud storage
- Pre-Capture Recording: Cloud subscribers benefit from pre-capture functionality, ensuring the camera starts recording right at the moment motion begins - never miss a thing
- Reliable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Connection: Optimized for 2.4GHz networks to deliver stable, uninterrupted performance. (Not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.)
- Exceptional Night Vision: Equipped with four powerful infrared LEDs and an advanced image sensor, providing sharp, detailed footage even in total darkness
Before selecting the add-on, verify that your exact camera, plan, power setup, and location support it. A plan that records motion events does not automatically provide continuous recording.
Device, country, and feature limitations
Ring says features vary by country. Smart features and monitoring services can be limited by device compatibility, local jurisdiction, language, and geography. A feature shown on a U.S. plan page may not be offered in another country, and a compatible camera may still require a particular plan or add-on.
- Confirm your country and address during enrollment.
- Check the exact model number of each doorbell or camera.
- Read the eligibility notes for intelligent alerts, Pro Intelligence, and Continuous Recording.
- For monitoring, verify local emergency-service and language requirements before subscribing.
Ring Protect names and legacy billing
Ring’s 2026 plan-change notice says plan names transitioned to Ring Protect names. If your account uses a legacy name or older billing arrangement, do not assume it maps perfectly to a current Solo, Multi, or Pro tier. Use the plan and benefits displayed inside your Ring account when deciding whether to change or cancel coverage.
A practical decision checklist
Answer these questions before you subscribe:
- Do you need to review an event later? If yes, a subscription is required for Ring’s recorded-video history.
- How many devices are at the same address? One points toward Solo; several point toward Multi or Pro.
- Do you need intelligent alerts or search? Check whether your model and country support the specific higher-tier feature.
- Do you need an alarm or human monitoring? Compare the monitoring requirements of Virtual Security Guard with your address and equipment.
- Could you lose important evidence? If so, plan how you will save footage before any trial or paid term ends.
Bottom line
You do not need a Ring subscription to use a Ring doorbell or camera for live viewing and real-time alert response. You do need Ring Protect to review recordings later. The current U.S. choices range from $4.99 per month for one device to $99 per month for professional monitoring, with Multi and Pro covering all eligible devices at one location. Choose based on the one question that matters most: whether live-only access is enough, or whether you need a reliable recorded history after the event is over.
