Yes, a turntable needs a phono preamp somewhere in the audio chain—but it does not always need a separate preamp box. A turntable with a built-in preamp can send a LINE-level signal to an AUX, CD, or similar receiver input. Otherwise, connect its PHONO output to a receiver’s PHONO input, or add an external phono preamp between the turntable and a line input. The key is to match the turntable’s output to the receiver’s input.

What a turntable preamp does

A phono preamp, also called a phono stage, prepares a turntable’s cartridge signal for the next device in the system. A cartridge’s PHONO output is lower and different from the LINE-level signal expected by inputs such as AUX or CD. The phono stage provides the needed amplification and, where applicable, the phono equalization built into a phono input or preamp.

A line input is designed for a signal that has already been brought to line level. Connecting a PHONO output directly to AUX can therefore produce very quiet sound. Simply turning up the receiver may not fix it and can make noise more noticeable. Sony’s support guidance also identifies a missing or incorrect phono stage as a cause of low or distorted volume.

“Preamp” can refer to different components in audio equipment. For this connection question, it means the phono preamp—not a receiver’s general preamplifier section, a headphone amplifier, or a power amplifier. Look for a PHONO input, a phono stage setting, or a turntable’s PHONO/LINE control to identify the relevant function.

Do you need a separate phono preamp?

Use this decision path before buying anything: check the turntable’s outputs or PHONO/LINE selector, then check the label on the receiver input you plan to use. A separate unit is only needed when the equipment you already have does not provide the phono stage required for the connection.

  • Receiver has PHONO; turntable can output PHONO: Connect the turntable’s PHONO output to the receiver’s PHONO input. Set the turntable to PHONO, or disable its built-in phono stage if the manual gives that option.
  • Receiver has no PHONO; turntable has a built-in preamp: Set the turntable to LINE and connect it to AUX, CD, Tape, Video, or another line input.
  • Neither device provides a phono stage: Place an external phono preamp between the turntable and a receiver line input.
  • Turntable is set to PHONO and receiver has no PHONO input: Route it through a compatible external phono preamp, then connect the preamp’s line output to the receiver’s line input.

Sony’s setup guidance makes the same distinction: if a receiver has no PHONO input, the turntable needs a built-in amplifier or an in-line amplifier to connect to another stereo input. A built-in or external stage can each solve the problem; the connection labels tell you which one to use.

PHONO and LINE: what the labels mean

PHONO identifies the turntable’s unamplified cartridge signal and the type of input or preamp designed to receive it. A receiver’s PHONO input normally includes a phono stage. A standalone preamp’s phono input serves the same role.

LINE identifies an output that has already passed through a phono stage. It is suitable for receiver inputs such as AUX, CD, or Tape. A built-in preamp may be switched on and off, or a turntable may provide separate PHONO and LINE outputs; follow the labels and the specific manual.

Do not treat PHONO and LINE as interchangeable input names. PHONO output into AUX usually lacks the amplification and equalization the system expects. LINE output into PHONO sends an already processed signal through another phono stage, which can cause excessive or distorted sound. The useful rule is simple: PHONO output to PHONO input; LINE output to a line input.

How to connect each common setup

Turntable with a built-in preamp and receiver with AUX

  1. Check that the turntable has a built-in phono stage and a LINE output or PHONO/LINE selector. Do not assume every deck has one.
  2. Set the selector to LINE, if present.
  3. Connect the turntable’s RCA output to a line input on the receiver, such as AUX, CD, Tape, or Video.
  4. Select that same input on the receiver and start playback at a moderate volume.

Sony’s PS-LX310BT is one documented example of a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, PHONO and LINE outputs, and a selector. Its setup illustrates the distinction; it does not mean another turntable has the same features. The model’s specifications also list selectable gain settings of Low (-4 dB), Mid (0 dB), and High (+6 dB). Those are settings for that particular deck, not a general rule for setting up every turntable.

Turntable with PHONO output and receiver with PHONO

  1. Set the turntable to PHONO, or switch off its built-in phono stage if the model has a bypass setting.
  2. Connect its PHONO output to the receiver’s PHONO input.
  3. Connect any ground wire as directed by the equipment manuals, then select PHONO on the receiver.

In this arrangement, the receiver provides the phono stage, so a second one is not needed in the signal path. If the turntable has both PHONO and LINE settings, use PHONO for this route; sending LINE into the receiver’s PHONO input can put the signal through another phono stage.

Turntable with PHONO output and receiver without PHONO

  1. Connect the turntable’s PHONO output to the external preamp’s phono input.
  2. Connect the external preamp’s line output to the receiver’s AUX, CD, Tape, or other line input.
  3. Connect a ground wire if the manuals specify one or if hum occurs, and select the receiver input used for the preamp.

The external unit must be a phono preamp compatible with the installed cartridge. A generic line-level preamp is not a substitute for a phono stage.

How to choose a separate preamp

If your turntable has no built-in stage and your receiver has no PHONO input, a standalone phono preamp is the practical fix. Before selecting one, confirm that it accepts your cartridge type and provides the connections your system needs. The manuals for the turntable, cartridge, and preamp are the safest way to verify matching; Pro-Ject’s E1 Phono instructions, for example, call for correct cartridge matching and amplification.

  • Cartridge compatibility: Check the cartridge installed on the turntable and the preamp’s supported cartridge type. Do not assume compatibility from the presence of RCA jacks alone.
  • Signal connections: The turntable needs to connect to a phono input on the preamp, and the preamp needs a line output that can connect to the receiver’s line input.
  • Grounding: Check whether the turntable has a separate earth wire and whether the preamp provides a grounding terminal. Follow the manuals’ instructions.
  • Existing controls: If a turntable already has an adjustable phono stage, verify its output setting before adding another component.

A separate box is not automatically an upgrade or a requirement. It solves a specific connection gap. If either the turntable or the receiver already has a compatible phono stage, use that stage instead of adding another one.

Compare the three ways to provide a phono stage

Option When it fits Connection to check
Receiver PHONO input The receiver has a PHONO input and the turntable is sending PHONO output. Turntable PHONO to receiver PHONO; follow instructions for any ground wire.
Built-in turntable preamp The turntable provides LINE output and the receiver has a line input but no PHONO input. Turntable LINE to AUX, CD, Tape, Video, or another line input.
Standalone phono preamp The turntable sends PHONO output and the receiver has no PHONO input. Turntable PHONO to the preamp’s phono input; preamp line output to receiver line input.

These options solve the same basic need in different places in the signal chain. The receiver’s PHONO input avoids an extra box when compatible; a built-in stage can simplify a connection to a line input; and a standalone stage fills the gap when neither existing device supplies one. Compare the available connections, cartridge match, and any grounding instructions—not just whether a component is described as a preamp.

Why a turntable may be quiet or distorted

When playback sounds wrong, check the signal path before replacing equipment. Start with the source and input labels, then confirm that exactly one suitable phono stage is active between the cartridge and the line-level receiver input.

  • PROTECTED FROM ANY ELECTRONIC INTERFERENCE - Internal metal shielding enclosure to block electro-magnetic interference and electronic noise
  • Very quiet sound on AUX or CD: The turntable may be sending PHONO output directly to a line input. Switch the deck to LINE if it has a built-in preamp, or add an external phono stage.
  • Distorted or unusually loud sound: LINE output may be connected to a receiver’s PHONO input, causing the signal to pass through phono amplification twice. Move the connection to a line input or set the turntable to PHONO if the receiver’s PHONO input is the intended path.
  • No sound or very low sound: Verify that the receiver is set to the input where the turntable or external preamp is connected, and confirm that the turntable’s output and receiver input are a matching pair.
  • Hum: Check the grounding instructions for the specific turntable and preamp. Pro-Ject’s E1 Phono manual says its earth wire may be connected to the amplifier’s earth terminal if hum occurs; follow the instructions for your own equipment rather than assuming every system uses the same arrangement.

After correcting the connection, bring the volume up gradually. If the signal remains low or distorted, consult the manuals for the turntable, cartridge, receiver, and any external phono stage. Sony’s low/no-audio troubleshooting guidance likewise distinguishes a turntable with a built-in preamp from a standard turntable that needs an amplified PHONO input or an external preamp.

What to check before rewiring or buying

  1. Read the turntable’s output labels. Look for PHONO, LINE, an output selector, or instructions describing a built-in amplifier or preamp.
  2. Read the receiver’s input labels. A PHONO input includes a phono stage; AUX, CD, Tape, and similar inputs are line inputs.
  3. Trace the connection from cartridge to receiver. Make sure the signal passes through one compatible phono stage before reaching a line input, or goes directly from PHONO output to a PHONO input.
  4. Check cartridge and grounding requirements. Use the component manuals to confirm compatibility and any earth-wire connection.
  5. Test the corrected route at moderate volume. If sound is still abnormal, troubleshoot the exact model instructions rather than assuming the preamp itself is faulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a preamp for a turntable?

A phono stage is needed somewhere in the signal chain, but it may already be built into the turntable or receiver. If neither has one, add a compatible external phono preamp between a PHONO-output turntable and a receiver line input.

What is the difference between PHONO and LINE?

PHONO is the turntable’s cartridge-level output and needs a phono stage. LINE has already passed through a phono stage and can connect to AUX, CD, Tape, or another line input. Match PHONO to PHONO and LINE to a line input.

Why is my turntable quiet on AUX?

AUX is a line input. If the turntable is sending PHONO output directly to it, the signal has not passed through the required phono stage. Switch the turntable to LINE if it has a built-in preamp, or connect an external phono preamp before AUX.

Can I connect a turntable with a built-in preamp to a receiver’s PHONO input?

Use the turntable’s PHONO output or turn its built-in stage off if its manual provides that option. Sending LINE output to PHONO can run the signal through phono amplification twice and cause excessive or distorted sound.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A turntable needs one compatible phono stage, not necessarily a separate box. Use PHONO output with a receiver’s PHONO input, or use LINE output with AUX, CD, Tape, or another line input. If the receiver has no PHONO input and the turntable has no built-in preamp, add a compatible standalone phono preamp. Check the labels, cartridge match, and grounding instructions before buying or rewiring.
