Usually, it depends on why you are flying. In the United States, a flight strictly for recreation can use the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations instead of a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. You still must pass the free Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), keep proof that you passed, follow the exception’s operating conditions, and meet registration and airspace rules.

A business, work, public-safety, or other non-recreational flight generally follows Part 107. That requires an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. “License” is common shorthand, but the FAA’s name for the credential is Remote Pilot Certificate.

Start with the purpose of the flight

The FAA pathway is determined primarily by the operation’s purpose, not by the drone’s size, camera, purchase price, or whether someone hands you money. Decide what the flight is for before you register the aircraft or schedule a test.

Planned operation FAA pathway What to do first
Strictly a hobby or recreational flight under the statutory exception Exception for Limited Recreational Operations Pass TRUST, retain proof, follow the exception’s conditions, and register when required.
Business, work, public-safety, or another non-recreational operation Part 107 Obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate and satisfy Part 107 requirements.
Either type of operation in controlled airspace Your applicable operating pathway plus airspace authorization Obtain authorization before takeoff through LAANC where available or FAA DroneZone.

Borderline situations are not settled by one payment arrangement or by calling a flight “personal.” If the purpose is unclear, use the FAA’s current getting-started guidance for the facts of your operation before flying.

Do I need a license to fly a drone for fun?

Not a Part 107 certificate, when the flight is genuinely recreational and qualifies for the FAA’s Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. “For fun” means the operation is limited to hobby or recreational purposes and meets every condition of that statutory exception.

You do still have obligations. A recreational flyer must pass TRUST, retain the completion proof so it can be produced if requested, comply with the exception’s operating conditions, and satisfy aircraft-registration and airspace requirements that apply to the planned flight.

What the recreational exception does not do

  • It does not replace TRUST.
  • It does not register the aircraft for you.
  • It does not authorize flight in controlled airspace.
  • It does not override state, local, park, landowner, or other site restrictions.

The exception is a legal operating path, not a blanket permission to fly anywhere. Keep your purpose and the location’s restrictions separate when making the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is TRUST the same as a Part 107 license?

No. TRUST and the Remote Pilot Certificate serve different categories of operation.

Credential or record Who uses it Key facts
Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) completion proof Recreational flyers operating under the statutory exception FAA-approved administrators offer it free. Keep the completion certificate available if requested. If you lose the certificate, the FAA says you must retake TRUST.
Remote Pilot Certificate Operators conducting Part 107 flights A formal FAA certificate earned through Part 107 requirements, including the initial aeronautical knowledge exam and continuing knowledge recency.

Passing TRUST does not qualify you for Part 107 work. Conversely, holding a Remote Pilot Certificate does not eliminate aircraft registration, Remote ID, airspace authorization, or local restrictions.

How to complete TRUST

  1. Choose an FAA-approved TRUST test administrator.
  2. Complete the administrator’s online safety and aeronautical-knowledge test. The approved administrators offer it at no charge.
  3. Follow the administrator’s instructions for receiving your completion certificate.
  4. Store the proof somewhere accessible on every flying day. A digital copy is useful, but follow any current FAA or administrator instructions about acceptable proof.

There is no separate FAA license issued after TRUST. The document you retain is evidence that you completed the recreational test.

When do I need a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate?

Use Part 107 when the operation is not strictly recreational and falls within the FAA’s small-unmanned-aircraft rules. The FAA states that a person operating under Part 107 must hold a Remote Pilot Certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First-time eligibility requirements

The FAA’s Part 107 guidance lists these requirements for a first-time applicant:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English, with the safety-related qualifications required by the FAA.
  • Be physically and mentally able to operate safely.
  • Pass the initial Unmanned Aircraft General—Small (UAG) aeronautical knowledge examination.

After certification, complete recurrent training within every 24 calendar months to keep aeronautical knowledge recency. The certificate is the pilot credential; it does not by itself register a drone or grant permission for a particular airspace.

A practical Part 107 decision

If you are planning paid aerial photographs, inspections, real-estate work, content made for an organization, or another operation whose purpose is not a personal hobby, plan for Part 107 before the flight. Do not wait until after accepting an assignment to decide that the recreational exception applies.

Do I need to register my drone?

Registration is an aircraft obligation separate from TRUST and separate from the pilot credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Operation Registration rule described by the FAA Threshold or term
Recreational operation under the statutory exception Register when the drone weighs more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams). Drones at or below 0.55 pounds (250 grams) are excepted from recreational registration.
Part 107 operation Drones operated under Part 107 must be registered. The recreational 250-gram exception does not remove the Part 107 registration requirement.

The FAA registration page lists a $5 fee and three-year validity for recreational inventory registration and for each Part 107 drone registration. Fees, inventory rules, and validity periods can change, so verify the current FAA page when you register rather than relying on an old receipt or third-party summary.

Registration checklist

  1. Classify the flight as recreational or Part 107.
  2. Check the aircraft’s weight against the recreational 0.55-pound (250-gram) threshold if the flight is recreational.
  3. Use the FAA’s current registration process and pay the listed fee, if one applies.
  4. Record the registration number with the aircraft and keep the registration information available.
  5. Display the registration number on the exterior when required. A plain identification label can display the number; a label is not a substitute for completing registration.

Registering a drone does not certify the person flying it, and passing TRUST does not register a drone.

What about Remote ID?

The FAA says drones that are required to be registered or are registered—including drones flown for recreation, business, or public safety—must comply with Remote ID. That makes Remote ID a separate compliance check after you determine whether registration is required.

Two equipment approaches

  • Standard Remote ID drone: the aircraft has an FAA-compliant Remote ID function built in.
  • Remote ID broadcast module: a compatible module is attached to an aircraft that uses that method.

Compatibility is not universal. Acceptance depends on the specific drone and module. Check the current FAA Declaration of Compliance information and the aircraft or module manufacturer’s documentation before buying or installing anything. Do not assume that a generic broadcast device will make an otherwise incompatible aircraft compliant.

Common Remote ID misunderstanding

Registration and Remote ID are related but not interchangeable. A registered aircraft must meet the applicable Remote ID rule, while a Remote ID module does not complete registration or provide airspace authorization.

Can I fly near an airport?

“Near an airport” is not enough information to answer yes or no. The controlling question is whether the planned location is in controlled airspace and what authorization that location permits.

Recreational flyers must obtain airspace authorization before operating in controlled airspace. LAANC is available in enabled areas through FAA-approved service suppliers. FAA DroneZone handles other authorization requests. Use the current FAA tool for the exact launch point, operating area, altitude limit, and time; limits vary by location and authorization.

Airport-area steps

  1. Identify the exact takeoff location, not merely the airport’s name.
  2. Check the current FAA airspace map or authorization tool.
  3. If the location is controlled airspace, request and receive authorization before flying.
  4. Use LAANC when the area is enabled and the planned operation fits its available authorization; otherwise submit the appropriate request through FAA DroneZone.
  5. Save the authorization details and follow any altitude, area, or time limitation attached to it.

TRUST, registration, and a Remote Pilot Certificate do not themselves grant permission to enter controlled airspace.

  1. Define the purpose. Write down whether the flight is strictly recreational or serves work, business, public safety, or another non-recreational objective.
  2. Select the pilot pathway. Recreational operations use the statutory exception and TRUST; non-recreational operations use Part 107 and a Remote Pilot Certificate.
  3. Check eligibility and documents. Recreational flyers should have TRUST proof. Part 107 applicants should confirm the minimum age, English, physical and mental capability, and UAG exam requirements.
  4. Handle aircraft registration. Apply the 250-gram recreational threshold only when the flight is recreational. Register every aircraft operated under Part 107.
  5. Check Remote ID. If the drone is registered or required to be registered, confirm a compliant standard system or compatible broadcast module using current FAA records.
  6. Check the location. Determine whether controlled airspace authorization is required and obtain it through LAANC or FAA DroneZone before takeoff.
  7. Check non-federal restrictions. Confirm rules for the state, municipality, park, property owner, or facility. Federal compliance does not automatically grant permission to launch or land at a particular site.
  8. Recheck when circumstances change. A new purpose, aircraft, launch site, or Remote ID configuration can change the required steps.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

“My drone is under 250 grams, so I can use it for paid work.”

The 250-gram exception described by the FAA applies to recreational registration. It does not turn a non-recreational operation into a recreational one. Reclassify the operation and follow Part 107, including its pilot-certificate and registration requirements.

“I passed TRUST, so I can fly in an airport zone.”

TRUST is a recreational safety test, not an airspace clearance. Check the location and obtain controlled-airspace authorization before operating there.

“The drone is registered, so Remote ID is optional.”

The FAA says registered or registration-required drones must comply with Remote ID. Verify the aircraft’s standard Remote ID status or an approved compatible module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I lost my TRUST certificate, but I remember passing.”

The FAA says a flyer who loses the completion certificate must retake TRUST. Keep the replacement proof accessible.

“The rules at my local park are the same as federal rules.”

This federal FAA framework does not resolve every state, local, park, landowner, or international restriction. Check the authority that controls the launch and landing site as well as FAA requirements.

What these rules do not answer

The requirements above are U.S. federal FAA rules. They do not establish the rules in another country, identify every state or municipal restriction, decide whether a particular payment arrangement makes a flight recreational, or confirm compatibility of a particular Remote ID module. FAA fees, test-administrator listings, authorization procedures, and equipment records can change. Check the current FAA pages and the relevant local authority immediately before flying.
