Usually, no separate driver download is needed to type with a standard, compliant keyboard. Windows, macOS, and Linux include support for common Human Interface Device (HID) keyboards. The operating system still uses drivers; the distinction is that it normally supplies the driver automatically rather than requiring you to install one yourself.
What “no driver needed” actually means
A driver lets the operating system communicate with hardware. A keyboard can therefore use a driver even when you never download or install one: the operating system provides the relevant support and detects a compatible keyboard when it is connected.
For basic key input, a standards-compliant keyboard usually works through this built-in support. A device that is unusual or does not follow the expected standards may behave differently, so “usually” is more accurate than “always.”

Windows
Windows supports keyboards through its HID architecture and system-supplied keyboard drivers. Microsoft Learn says, “Vendor drivers aren’t required for keyboards and mice that are compliant with the supported HID Usages and top level collections.” Windows also provides an in-box HID-over-USB driver on client editions. Its Plug and Play system enumerates USB devices and looks for matching identifiers, which is why a typical compatible USB keyboard can work without a manual driver installation. macOS
Apple says it supplies drivers and services for common HID types, including keyboards. That supports the general expectation that a standard keyboard does not need a separate manufacturer driver for basic typing. For model-specific functions, consult the keyboard maker’s current instructions; Apple’s cited documentation is developer guidance, not a setup guide for every keyboard model. Linux
The Linux input subsystem documentation describes automatic USB HID detection and support for USB keyboards. Linux’s HID transport documentation also lists USB and Bluetooth as supported transports. A standard, compliant keyboard generally uses the system’s HID and input support, though an unusual or nonconforming device may need device-specific handling. When keyboard software may matter
Basic typing and model-specific configuration are different needs. A manufacturer utility may expose additional controls or proprietary features, but that does not mean every keyboard has downloadable software or that every feature requires a separate driver. HID devices can exchange input and output reports, including reports used for keyboard LEDs, and vendors can add functionality. Check the official support page for your exact model and operating system to learn whether a particular feature requires software. Microsoft’s HID overview explains HID reports and device concepts.
Keyboard layout settings are also distinct from a hardware driver: they tell the operating system how to interpret key presses for a language or layout. Changing a layout is not a way to install or repair a driver.

If the keyboard does not work
Start with connection and detection rather than downloading a driver from an unofficial site. These checks can help isolate the cause, but none is a guaranteed fix:

- Check power and connection. For a USB keyboard, reconnect it and try another port. If practical, connect it directly to the computer instead of through a hub.
- Restart the computer. Then check whether the operating system detects the keyboard.
- Isolate the device or computer. Try the keyboard on another computer, or test a known-working keyboard on the original computer. This can help distinguish a keyboard problem from a computer or port problem.
- Separate typing problems from feature problems. If ordinary typing works but a special control does not, look up that feature in the manufacturer’s official documentation for the exact keyboard model and operating system version. Install model-specific software only if the manufacturer identifies it as necessary for that feature.
