No. You can begin running with comfortable gear and a manageable run-walk plan; a phone app can record a route if you want data. A GPS watch becomes useful only when you want metrics on your wrist, built-in GPS, phone-free recording, or specific training features.

Running itself does not require a device

The act of starting is separate from measuring it. Your first sessions can be guided by time, effort and how your body feels. A simple run-walk pattern is a practical way to make the workload manageable, and you can decide later whether collecting pace, distance or heart-rate data will help you.

Start with clothing that lets you move comfortably, shoes that fit your feet and a route where you can stop safely. If you want a record, carry the phone you already own and use a compatible tracking app. If you do not want to carry electronics, leave the recording for another day. Missing a map or distance number does not make the run less valid.

A watch is therefore an optional tool rather than an entry requirement. The useful question is not whether beginners are supposed to own one, but whether its particular advantages solve a problem you actually have.

Use your phone to record a run

What a phone setup can do

Strava documents recording activities in its phone app as well as through compatible watches and other wearables. Its support documentation covers the Apple Watch app and a broader list of compatible devices and apps: Strava Apple Watch App and Strava device compatibility.

With the phone in your pocket, belt or hand, the app can use the phone’s location services to create a route record. You see the information on the phone rather than on your wrist, and the phone remains with you for calls, safety contacts or navigation. This is a sensible first experiment because it lets you learn whether you enjoy seeing run data before buying another device.

Phone-recording procedure

  1. Install a tracking app that supports running activities, or open one you already use, and sign in if the service requires an account.
  2. Enable location permission while using the app. Battery-saving settings can restrict location updates, so check the app’s permission if the route does not appear.
  3. Open the app’s recording screen and choose the running activity type. Interface names can change between app versions, but the recording control and activity selection should be visible before you start.
  4. Place the phone where it will stay secure and where you can reach it without changing your stride. A loose phone can be a distraction and can stop an activity accidentally.
  5. Wait briefly for the location indicator to settle, then start the recording and begin your planned run-walk session.
  6. When you finish, stop or pause the recording, review the activity and save it. Let the app upload while you have a connection if the service stores activities online.
  7. After saving, check that the route and elapsed time look plausible. A missing section is easier to investigate immediately than weeks later.

You can also run without recording. If handling a phone makes you tense, leave it in a safe place and use time or landmarks for the session; data collection should not become a reason to avoid running.

What a GPS running watch adds

Information on your wrist

A dedicated watch moves the recording controls and selected fields to your wrist. Garmin describes its Forerunner 70 as an entry-level GPS running smartwatch with GPS, pace, distance, wrist-based heart rate and beginner-oriented plans. Those are examples of features a beginner-focused model may provide, not proof that every watch has the same functions.

Seeing elapsed time, pace or distance without taking out a phone can make an interval or run-walk session easier to follow. Wrist-based heart-rate information may help you observe effort trends, although the value depends on how you use the information and how well the sensor behaves for you.

Recording without carrying the phone

A watch with its own GPS can record a route while the phone stays at home, depending on the model and the way you configure recording. That can make short runs less cumbersome and keeps your hands free. Confirm the specific device’s recording and synchronization behavior before buying: some watches need a phone later to upload activities, while others have broader standalone functions.

Training features

Beginner plans, alerts, interval targets and other guided features can turn a watch into a session cue rather than merely a distance logger. They are useful when you want a particular structure and are willing to follow the device’s prompts. They are not prerequisites for learning a comfortable pace or building consistency.

Decide whether a watch solves your problem

Stay with a phone when

  • You already carry a phone for safety, communication or navigation.
  • You mainly want an occasional route, elapsed-time or distance record.
  • You are still learning whether regular running will fit your routine.
  • You prefer spending your first sessions on movement rather than configuring another device.

Consider a watch when

  • Taking a phone out to check a split interrupts your rhythm.
  • You want to leave the phone behind while still recording with built-in GPS.
  • You will use wrist-based pace, distance, heart-rate fields or structured prompts often enough to justify another device.
  • Your preferred service supports the watch directly, or you are comfortable transferring activity files by an available method.

Delay the purchase without losing progress

There is no deadline by which a new runner must own a watch. Keep a brief note of what you wished you could see or do during several sessions: a route map, an interval alert, a phone-free run or a more convenient view of elapsed time. That list gives you a concrete buying criterion instead of turning the purchase into a test of whether you count as a “real” runner.

GPS accuracy has limits

Use the appropriate activity profile

Garmin’s track-running guidance says that watches supporting a Track Run profile can optimize pace and distance on a standard track. It also advises waiting for GPS acquisition before beginning. Follow the device-specific instructions in Garmin’s track-run accuracy tips when you are running on a marked track.

This is a narrow settings recommendation. It does not show that every GPS watch is always more accurate than a phone, or that any watch will produce perfect readings. Buildings, trees, weather, satellite geometry, firmware, phone placement and watch settings can all affect a recorded route. Treat a sudden pace jump or an oddly shaped map as a measurement issue to investigate, not as a verdict on your fitness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical accuracy checks

  • Wait for the device to report that GPS is ready before starting.
  • Use the activity profile that matches the environment, such as a track profile where your watch supports one.
  • Keep the phone or watch positioned consistently between sessions so comparisons are meaningful.
  • Review the map and elapsed time together; one implausible point does not necessarily invalidate the entire run.

No novice-specific percentage or robust general statistic establishes that one device category outperforms the other. Choose for the workflow you want, then use the device’s documented settings carefully.

How to move from phone tracking to a watch

Identify the missing capability

Before shopping, write the single inconvenience you want to remove. “I want to see intervals without holding my phone” points to a wrist display and alerts. “I want to run without my phone” points to standalone GPS recording. “I want a plan to follow” points to training features and the way they are delivered. A vague desire for better data is harder to match to a model.

Check the functions, not just the word GPS

  • Recording mode: Verify that the watch can record a run without the phone if that is important to you.
  • Fields and alerts: Confirm that the model displays the pace, distance, heart-rate information or interval cues you intend to use.
  • Heart-rate method: A product may list wrist-based heart rate, as Garmin does for the Forerunner 70; decide whether that is sufficient for your use.
  • Training support: Check whether beginner-oriented plans or structured workouts are included and how they are started.
  • Service compatibility: Look up current support for the app or platform where you keep your activities.
  • Phone relationship: Determine whether the watch needs a phone for setup, synchronization or software updates even if it records independently.

Check compatibility before ordering

Strava maintains a current list of compatible devices and apps and describes file-upload options for some unsupported direct integrations in its device compatibility guidance. Check that list for the exact model and your phone platform. Compatibility can change with app and firmware updates, so a product description from a different date is not enough.

Common beginner pitfalls and fixes

Buying before establishing a routine

A feature-rich device cannot create time or motivation. Try several comfortable sessions with a phone or no tracker first. If the watch still addresses a recurring obstacle, you will be better placed to select the features you will actually use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Letting live pace dictate every step

GPS pace can fluctuate, especially near buildings or trees. Early runners often do better using effort and a planned run-walk pattern, then reviewing the recorded data afterward. Live numbers are optional feedback, not instructions to speed up whenever a display changes.

Starting before GPS is ready

Beginning immediately can leave the first part of a route with poor location data. Wait for acquisition as the manufacturer recommends, particularly when you care about the map or distance.

Assuming every watch works with every app

Device support is specific. Confirm direct synchronization or the available upload format before committing to a watch, and understand whether a phone is required to complete the transfer.

Treating a clean map as a performance judgment

A route trace is a measurement record, not a grade. If it looks wrong, check permissions, battery settings, GPS acquisition and the selected activity profile before changing your training plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sensible first-running plan

  1. Choose a safe route and a comfortable run-walk structure that you can finish without exhausting yourself.
  2. Decide whether recording would help. If yes, use the phone you already own and a compatible app; if no, run without a tracker.
  3. After several sessions, note which information or convenience you actually missed.
  4. Buy a GPS watch only if those repeated needs match specific functions such as wrist metrics, phone-free recording or structured training support.
  5. Set up the device, wait for GPS acquisition and test synchronization on a short familiar run before relying on it for a longer outing.

The watch decision can follow your running rather than lead it. Start with the simplest setup that lets you run consistently, and add hardware when its particular capabilities will make your sessions easier or more useful.
