No—not automatically. You need a computer that meets the requirements of the specific shooter and the performance level you want. A basic desktop may run a relatively light competitive game, while a current blockbuster shooter at high settings, high refresh rates, or 4K can need a much faster CPU, a discrete graphics card, more memory, and substantial SSD space. For some games, a supported console is a better alternative than buying a PC.
There is no single “modern FPS” hardware requirement
First-person shooters span a wide range of engines, visual settings and competitive targets. The words minimum, recommended, competitive and 4K Ultra describe different goals, not interchangeable labels.
A minimum specification usually describes the hardware a publisher expects to support the game at a basic level. It does not promise a particular frame rate at your chosen resolution, graphics preset or match size unless the publisher explicitly attaches that target to the tier. A recommended tier may target a stated experience, while a high-refresh or 4K tier can be several steps above it.

What the published requirements look like in practice
VALORANT: modest entry hardware, higher tiers for high refresh
Riot Games Support’s “Minimum & Recommended PC Specs” page, dated May 21, 2026, labels three performance tiers for VALORANT:
| Riot tier | Publisher’s frame-rate label | Example CPU | Example graphics hardware | Memory |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 30 FPS | Intel i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220 | 4 GB RAM |
| Recommended | 60 FPS | Not stated in the supplied tier summary | Not stated in the supplied tier summary | Not stated in the supplied tier summary |
| High-end | 144 FPS | Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | GTX 1050 Ti, Radeon R7 370 or Intel Arc A310 | Not stated in the supplied tier summary |
These are Riot’s published tiers and component examples, not independent benchmark results. A machine containing one of the listed parts can behave differently depending on cooling, drivers, background software, memory configuration, resolution and in-game settings. Riot’s own wording is narrow: “So long as your PC meets our minimum specifications, you’ll have what it takes to play.” That statement applies to VALORANT, not to every shooter or to a guaranteed frame rate on every system.
Riot lists Windows 10 64-bit, build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11 64-bit; DirectX 11 support; and SSE 4.2 or AVX support. On Windows 11, the page also requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. A PC can therefore have an apparently adequate processor and graphics chip yet fail an operating-system or firmware requirement.
Riot also says VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines. Those are not valid workarounds if your local PC does not meet the title’s requirements.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6: substantially heavier tiers
Activision’s support page, displayed with the date 07/02/25 (interpreted here as July 2, 2025), describes desktop-PC specifications for Black Ops 6 and warns that laptop graphics processors with similar names can be different models and may not be supported. The page says the game needs broadband internet and DirectX 12 compatibility, and that updates can require additional storage.
| Black Ops 6 tier | Target or use described by Activision | CPU examples | Graphics examples | RAM | Video memory |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Minimum specification; no frame-rate target stated | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 960 or Intel Arc A580 | 8 GB | 2 GB |
| Recommended | 60 FPS in most situations at high settings | Ryzen 5 1600X or Core i7-6700K | Radeon RX 6600 XT or GeForce GTX 1080 Ti/RTX 3060 | 12 GB | 8 GB |
| Competitive / 4K Ultra | Competitive high-FPS play or 4K Ultra | Ryzen 7 2700X or Core i7-8700K | Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 3080/4070 | 16 GB | 10 GB |
Activision lists Windows 10 64-bit for these specifications. It states that Black Ops 6 requires 102 GB of SSD space at launch; Warzone requires additional space. Treat that capacity as a starting requirement rather than permanent free-space guidance, because patches and optional content can change the amount needed.
The figures show why “can it launch?” and “can it deliver the experience I want?” are separate questions. The minimum tier has 8 GB of RAM and no stated frame-rate goal. The recommended 60-FPS-at-high-settings tier moves to 12 GB, while the competitive/4K Ultra tier specifies 16 GB and much stronger graphics hardware. These are publisher specifications, not independent tests, and Activision says the requirements may be updated.

How to check whether your existing PC is suitable
Use the following process instead of relying on a computer’s marketing label. “Gaming PC,” “office PC” and “creator PC” are not standardized performance classes.
- Name the exact game and edition. Separate a base game from a demanding mode, an expansion, a remastered release or a companion title such as Warzone. Requirements can differ within the same franchise.
- Open the publisher’s current requirements page. Record the minimum, recommended and any competitive, high-refresh or 4K tiers. Note the date and whether the page says the figures can change.
- Identify your exact components. In Windows, open Settings > System > About to see the processor and installed RAM. Open Task Manager > Performance to identify the GPU, its dedicated video memory and the storage drive. For a laptop, record the complete GPU model, not only a family name such as “RTX 3060.”
- Check software and platform prerequisites. Confirm the Windows edition and 64-bit status, DirectX version, processor instruction support, TPM and Secure Boot when required. A compatible GPU alone is not enough.
- Check free storage on the correct drive. A game that requires an SSD may not be satisfied by a nearly full or much slower disk. Leave room for updates; Activision specifically warns that updates can need extra space.
- Match the tier to your goal. If you only need basic play, compare with minimum requirements. For a stated 60-FPS target, use the tier that actually names 60 FPS. For a 144-Hz monitor or 4K, compare with the publisher’s high-refresh or 4K tier when one exists.
- Use the exact component class, not a vague age comparison. Two processors from different generations, or a desktop GPU and its laptop counterpart, can have materially different performance even when their names look similar.
Do not turn a minimum match into a promise that the game will hold a desired frame rate. Real performance also depends on resolution, graphics options, thermal limits, drivers, background processes, map complexity and updates. Without a title-specific test, the responsible conclusion is that the hardware meets a published compatibility tier—not that it will produce a guaranteed number in every situation.
What “gaming PC” usually means for FPS play
For this question, the useful category is a desktop with a discrete graphics card and parts that meet the chosen game’s recommended specification. Integrated graphics can be sufficient for a title whose official minimum tier lists an integrated processor GPU, as VALORANT’s Intel HD 4000 example does. That does not make integrated graphics suitable for every current shooter or every visual setting.
A discrete GPU is especially relevant when the target moves from basic play to high settings, high refresh or 4K. CPU capability matters for frame-time consistency and simulation, while RAM and video memory affect whether the game and its assets fit comfortably. Storage is part of the requirement when a title specifies an SSD and has large updates.

There is no evidence-based “future-proof” part or universal build that can be recommended without a budget, resolution, refresh-rate target and list of games. A sensible purchase brief is more precise: “a PC whose exact CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system and storage meet the current recommended tier for my named titles.”
When a console means you do not need a PC
Some modern FPS games support consoles, so an existing compatible console can remove the need for a PC purchase. Activision lists Black Ops 6 for Windows, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. If Black Ops 6 is your chosen game and you already own one of those supported consoles, compare that route with the cost of a new PC.
This example does not establish that every modern FPS is available on the same consoles. Check the specific game’s official platform list, edition compatibility, online-service requirements and controller or keyboard preferences. Console and PC performance should not be treated as directly equivalent without title-specific evidence.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying from the label alone
A product described as a “gaming desktop” can still have an entry-level GPU or insufficient memory for your target. Ask for the exact CPU, GPU, RAM capacity, storage type and operating system, then compare those parts with the game’s current table.

Comparing a laptop GPU with a desktop GPU by name
Activision explicitly warns that laptop graphics cards that appear to align with its desktop specifications can be different models and may not be supported. Verify the laptop’s exact model and the publisher’s compatibility notes.
Treating minimum as recommended
Minimum hardware may establish basic support but says nothing about high settings, a 144-Hz display or 4K unless the publisher assigns that target. Use the tier that corresponds to the experience you actually want.
Ignoring firmware and API checks
VALORANT’s Windows 11 requirements include TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot, alongside DirectX 11 and SSE 4.2 or AVX support. These checks can stop installation or launch even when the headline CPU and GPU appear adequate.

Assuming cloud gaming solves every mismatch
Riot says VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines. Availability and support vary by game, so never assume streaming is an approved substitute for local hardware.
A practical purchase decision
Buy or upgrade a PC only after you can answer these questions:
- Which exact FPS games will you play?
- Which operating system, API and firmware prerequisites do they list?
- Do you want basic compatibility, a publisher-stated 60-FPS experience, high-refresh competitive play or 4K?
- Does your current PC’s exact CPU, GPU, RAM, video memory and SSD capacity meet that tier?
- Would an already-owned supported console run the title instead?
- Have you allowed for updates, laptop-versus-desktop differences and changing requirements?
If the answers point to a PC, compare complete systems by their named components and the game’s current recommended tier. If they point to a console you already own, there may be no reason to buy a gaming PC for that title. Recheck official requirements before purchase because publishers can revise specifications after launch.
