Usually, no. Whether you need a Dolby Atmos television or eARC depends on the Naim model and on whether you want ordinary two-channel TV sound or an immersive Atmos soundtrack. Most Naim all-in-one and connected systems are stereo devices: set the television to PCM, LPCM or Stereo. The notable exception is the Mu-so Utopia, which Naim specifies for Dolby Atmos, multichannel Dolby formats and HDMI eARC. For that model, a TV with an eARC output is the correct route to Atmos from built-in streaming apps, a game console or other TV sources.

Start with the model, not the television

Naim uses several different architectures under the all-in-one and connected-system labels. A built-in-speaker system, a compact stereo unit and a streaming amplifier with separate passive speakers do not have the same HDMI inputs or decoder capabilities. Buying an Atmos television before identifying the model can therefore leave you with an expensive feature the Naim system cannot use.

The practical split is simple:

  • Mu-so Utopia: the Atmos-capable path in this group. It has an HDMI eARC input and accepts multichannel Dolby formats.
  • Mu-so 2nd Generation: a stereo TV solution using HDMI ARC or optical, with the television set to a two-channel output.
  • Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation: a compact system with optical TV input; Naim’s guide does not describe it as an Atmos endpoint.
  • Uniti Atom, Uniti Star and Uniti Nova: streaming amplifiers that can take TV audio, but they need separate passive speakers. Their documented TV use is stereo rather than Atmos.

Naim’s compatibility guidance states that its stereo-oriented devices decode two-channel signals only. A television left in Dolby Digital, Auto or another multichannel mode can consequently produce silence, clicking or distortion instead of sound.

Which Naim systems need Atmos or eARC?

Naim path Atmos and eARC requirement TV connection and output mode What the setup is suited to
Mu-so Utopia eARC is needed for the full Atmos-from-TV path. Naim lists Dolby Atmos and multichannel Dolby support. TV eARC socket to the Utopia HDMI eARC input; use a compatible high-speed cable and select a supported Atmos format on the TV. Immersive films, concerts, games and other TV sources where height and surround information matter.
Mu-so 2nd Generation Dolby Atmos and eARC are not required for its documented TV operation. HDMI ARC or optical; choose PCM, LPCM or Stereo and avoid Dolby or surround output. One-box stereo TV improvement combined with music streaming.
Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation Naim’s guide does not specify an Atmos requirement or Atmos decoding. Optical input; configure the TV for two-channel PCM/LPCM/Stereo. Compact music listening and basic TV playback, not a soundbar-style immersive system.
Uniti Atom, Star or Nova Atmos and eARC are not required for the documented stereo TV path. HDMI ARC on the listed models (with earlier Atom variations) or optical; set the TV to PCM/LPCM/Stereo. Streaming amplification and TV integration with separately chosen passive speakers.

The table describes the capabilities documented by Naim, not a promise that every television, firmware version or source device will expose the same menus. Check the exact model name and current manual before purchasing accessories.

What ARC and eARC actually do

HDMI ARC for stereo

Audio Return Channel (ARC) sends sound from a television back through the same HDMI cable that carries control and video signals. It is sufficient for a two-channel PCM signal, which is the format Naim recommends for its stereo-oriented products. ARC is therefore useful on a Mu-so 2nd Generation or a compatible Uniti system even when the television has no Atmos support.

eARC for the Utopia Atmos route

Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) provides the higher-bandwidth connection required for lossless and multichannel formats used by an Atmos-capable system. Mu-so Utopia has a dedicated HDMI eARC input; connect the television’s socket marked eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input. Dolby’s connection guidance identifies HDMI 2.1 as necessary for eARC installations, so the cable and both HDMI ports must support that standard. A TV that has only ARC can still send ordinary stereo to a compatible device, but it does not provide the specified Utopia Atmos path.

Optical as the simple alternative

Toslink optical carries a straightforward digital stereo feed and avoids HDMI control-handshake issues. It is the documented TV input for Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation and an alternative on systems that provide an optical socket. Optical is appropriate when you want reliable two-channel sound and do not need TV remote control through HDMI-CEC or multichannel Atmos.

Setting up a legacy stereo Naim system

Use this procedure for Mu-so 2nd Generation, Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation and the stereo TV path on Uniti products.

  1. Identify the correct input. For HDMI, plug the Naim unit into the television’s HDMI socket labelled ARC. For optical, connect the TV’s optical output to the Naim optical input. Do not route the cable through an AV receiver or switch while diagnosing a problem; Naim recommends a direct connection.
  2. Select the Naim input. Choose the HDMI or optical source in the Naim control application or on the unit, according to the model’s controls.
  3. Open the television’s sound menu. Menu names vary, but look under Settings, Sound, Audio Output or Digital Audio Output.
  4. Choose PCM, LPCM or Stereo. These labels describe the two-channel output Naim’s stereo devices are designed to decode.
  5. Turn off multichannel processing for this output. Avoid Auto, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Bitstream, Pass-through or Surround when the Naim model is stereo-only. The exact labels differ by television manufacturer.
  6. Enable HDMI-CEC for ARC. CEC may have a manufacturer-specific name. It allows the TV and Naim unit to discover the ARC connection and lets the television remote control volume where supported.
  7. Test a built-in TV app and a live HDMI source. Testing both helps distinguish a television-output setting from a source-specific format problem.

Naim specifically warns that Auto or Dolby settings can result in distortion, clicking sounds or silence on its two-channel devices. Changing the digital output to PCM or LPCM is the first corrective action, not replacing the speakers.

Setting up Mu-so Utopia for Dolby Atmos

Atmos playback requires a complete chain: an Atmos-capable source, a television that can pass the relevant format through eARC, and the Mu-so Utopia’s HDMI eARC input.

  1. Confirm the television’s port. Locate the socket explicitly marked eARC. A port labelled only ARC is not the documented full-bandwidth connection for Utopia Atmos.
  2. Connect directly. Run the HDMI cable from the TV eARC port to the Mu-so Utopia HDMI eARC input. Keep an AV receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch out of the path while establishing the connection.
  3. Use an appropriate cable. Dolby’s guidance calls for HDMI 2.1 in eARC setups; a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable is the relevant specification.
  4. Enable eARC in the TV menu. Some televisions expose a separate eARC toggle under advanced audio settings. Set it to On or Auto as the manufacturer describes.
  5. Enable CEC. HDMI-CEC is commonly required for ARC/eARC discovery and power or volume coordination.
  6. Choose the source’s Atmos-capable output. Streaming apps, consoles and disc players may offer Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus or another Dolby mode. Select the format the television and source both support; if the source offers only stereo, the Naim system cannot create the missing source channels.
  7. Verify the signal on the TV and Naim controls. Look for an eARC connection status or an Atmos/Dolby indicator where the firmware provides one. Begin with a known Atmos title or test signal before changing several settings at once.

Naim’s 2026 product specification lists Mu-so Utopia at 720 watts total output, 15 speaker drivers and a maximum listed Dolby Digital AC4 configuration of 7.1.4 channels. Those figures describe the product’s specified hardware and decoding capability; they do not mean every program is mixed in 7.1.4 or that a stereo source will become native Atmos.

Cable and port requirements

For ARC stereo connections

Naim’s HDMI troubleshooting guidance recommends using the television’s ARC-labelled port, connecting the Naim device directly, enabling CEC and using an HDMI cable rated version 1.4 or higher. A newer cable is acceptable, but the important checks are the port label, direct path and active CEC.

For eARC and Atmos

Use the eARC-labelled TV port and Utopia eARC input with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. The cable cannot add Atmos decoding to a stereo Naim product, nor can it turn an ARC-only television into an eARC television. It only removes one possible bandwidth and compatibility limitation in a chain that already supports eARC.

For optical

Optical needs no HDMI-CEC negotiation. Select optical as the TV’s output and the corresponding Naim input, then keep the TV format at PCM/LPCM/Stereo for models whose documented operation is two-channel.

Troubleshooting: silent, clicking or distorted TV audio

No sound on a stereo Naim model

  • Change Digital Audio Output from Auto, Dolby, Bitstream or Pass-through to PCM or LPCM.
  • Confirm that the Naim unit is on the HDMI ARC or optical input actually in use.
  • For HDMI, move the cable to the TV socket labelled ARC and enable CEC.
  • Remove intermediary switches and receivers, then connect the TV directly to Naim.
  • Power-cycle the television and Naim unit after changing ARC settings so they renegotiate the connection.

ARC connects but volume control does not work

Audio can pass while CEC control fails. Re-enable CEC on both devices, check the television’s device-control setting and try a direct cable. CEC names differ among manufacturers, so the setting may not literally be called CEC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Utopia does not show Atmos

  • Verify that both ends use eARC-labelled ports, not ARC-only ports.
  • Check that eARC is enabled in the TV’s advanced audio menu.
  • Replace an unknown or damaged lead with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable.
  • Confirm the source subscription, title or game actually provides Atmos and that the source device is permitted to pass it through.
  • Temporarily set the TV to a supported Dolby or PCM mode to determine whether the issue is format negotiation rather than the physical connection.

Optical works but HDMI does not

That result usually points to ARC/eARC handshake, CEC or port selection rather than a failed speaker system. Keep optical if dependable stereo is all you need; otherwise repeat the direct-connection and port checks before adding other equipment.

Choose the television according to your goal

If you want clear stereo TV sound

You do not need a Dolby Atmos TV, and you do not need eARC. A television with HDMI ARC or optical output is enough for a Mu-so 2nd Generation, Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation or the stereo path of a Uniti system. Set the output to PCM/LPCM/Stereo and choose the model whose speaker arrangement and room coverage suit you.

If you want Atmos from TV sources

Choose a television that explicitly provides eARC and supports the Dolby formats your sources use, then pair it with Mu-so Utopia. Confirm the port labels and cable specification before purchase. Atmos support in the TV’s internal apps does not by itself guarantee that every external console or player will pass Atmos through; source, TV and Naim settings must agree.

If you are considering a Uniti product

Remember that Uniti Atom, Star and Nova are amplifiers, not integrated speaker bars. Budget for a suitable pair of passive speakers and place them to create the intended stereo image. Their HDMI ARC or optical input adds TV integration, but the documented path remains two-channel rather than a built-in Atmos array.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What an Atmos television cannot fix

  • It cannot make Mu-so 2nd Generation, Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation or a stereo Uniti setup decode multichannel Dolby.
  • It cannot compensate for selecting Dolby or Auto output on a Naim model that expects PCM.
  • It cannot create height information when the program is stereo.
  • It cannot overcome a missing eARC port, incompatible cable or disabled CEC on a Utopia installation.

Conversely, an eARC cable is not mandatory for ordinary stereo playback. It becomes relevant when the model, television and source are all being used for the multichannel Atmos objective.

A quick buying and setup checklist

  • Write down the exact Naim model and generation.
  • Decide whether the goal is stereo TV enhancement or Dolby Atmos immersion.
  • For legacy stereo models, confirm HDMI ARC or optical availability and plan to use PCM/LPCM/Stereo.
  • For Mu-so Utopia Atmos, confirm a TV eARC port, compatible Dolby support and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable.
  • Use a direct TV-to-Naim connection while configuring.
  • Enable HDMI-CEC for ARC/eARC control and discovery.
  • Test with a known source, then change one setting at a time.
  • Check current product documentation because specifications, firmware behavior and television menus can change.
