A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) turns digital audio data into an analog signal that headphones, an amplifier, or other audio equipment can use. Your phone, computer, streamer, or another source may already have a DAC built in, so an external unit is useful only if it suits your connections and solves a need in your actual listening setup. Product specifications can show compatibility; they do not establish that every external DAC will produce an audible improvement.
What a DAC does in a hi-fi chain
Digital recordings and streams represent audio as numerical data. A DAC converts that data into an analog signal for the next part of the system. In a basic chain, the path is source device → DAC → analog destination, such as headphones or an amplifier connected to passive speakers.
Conversion is the DAC’s core function, but a complete external device may also include a USB interface, filtering, analog output circuitry, volume control, or a headphone amplifier. Those features affect how it connects and what it can drive; they are not all the same thing as digital-to-analog conversion. Texas Instruments’ PCM2706C, for example, is a USB stereo DAC component, not a finished consumer audio device. Texas Instruments’ PCM2706C product information identifies it as a 16-bit part supporting 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz sampling rates, with 98 dB SNR. The linked data sheet is revision B, dated August 25, 2015; those component figures should not be applied to a complete DAC that uses another design.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Start with the source and destination, not with a maximum sample-rate number. Check the ports and output type you need, then confirm the exact input’s supported formats. A USB DAC may connect directly to a computer or phone and provide an analog output; a desktop unit may instead accept USB, optical, or coaxial digital input and send analog audio to an amplifier.

- Plug-and-Play Convenience: Instant HiFi audio with no driver installation. Connect to TVs, computers, speaker systems, or DVD players. Compact design fits anywhere, offering ultimate audio freedom
- Bass and Treble Controls: Adjustable bass and treble knobs for fine-tuning sound. Natural feel with smooth volume adjustment. High-quality metal knobs for a premium experience. Optimize audio for any source
- Compact and High-Quality: Compact DAC converter with full metallic shell. Supports 24-bit/192kHz HD audio with low jitter. Includes output protection circuit for system safety
- Complete Accessories: Includes USB charging cable, optical cable, and PC-USB to Type-B cable. Ensures hassle-free setup and immediate use. Seamless connectivity for various devices. (Note: No microphone input.)
- Source connection: Identify whether your source can send audio over USB, optical, or coaxial S/PDIF. For a phone or tablet, check host support and whether an adapter is required.
- Destination: Match the DAC’s analog output to the next device. A 3.5 mm headphone output is not interchangeable with a fixed-level RCA line output for every purpose.
- Headphones: If you want to connect headphones directly, confirm that the unit includes a headphone amplifier and check its stated output and recommended headphone impedance range.
- Controls and level: Check whether the analog output is fixed or adjustable and where volume will be controlled in the chain.
- Formats by input: Read the specifications for the input you will actually use. USB, optical, and coaxial inputs on the same device may support different bit depths or sample rates.
These checks help avoid buying a device that cannot connect to the source, has the wrong output for the destination, or lacks the headphone drive you need.
What published specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Bit depth and sample rate describe supported digital formats; they are not standalone sound-quality rankings. A higher maximum does not establish that a DAC will sound better in a particular system. Likewise, figures such as signal-to-noise ratio or dynamic range are manufacturer or component specifications unless supported by independently described measurements. The official product pages discussed here document claimed features, not comparative listening results.

Audioengine’s DAC3 page illustrates why the detail behind a headline specification matters. The page describes processing sample rates up to 192 kHz, but its detailed input table specifies native playback from 44.1 to 96 kHz and says 188.2/192 kHz is resampled to 96 kHz. Treat the detailed table as the relevant playback qualification rather than assuming native 192 kHz playback. The same page lists USB audio input, a 3.5 mm stereo analog output, 2.0 V RMS full-scale output, 2 ohm output impedance, and a recommended headphone impedance range of 12 ohms to 10 kohms. It also lists greater than 116 dB SNR; that is a product specification, not evidence of a guaranteed audible benefit. Audioengine’s DAC3 specifications are on a product page that shows no publication date.
Playback software and source settings matter too. AudioQuest says its DragonFly Black v1.5 natively decodes up to 24-bit/96 kHz, can drive headphones directly, and can feed a preamp or AV receiver. The manufacturer lists computer and mobile-device compatibility; some mobile connections require an Apple Camera Adapter or a Made for Android/OTG adapter. It also warns that selecting a playback rate above a file’s native rate converts the data, while selecting a lower rate downsamples high-resolution files. AudioQuest’s DragonFly Black product page does not show a publication date.

How different DAC configurations compare
These examples show why connection and output details are more useful than treating all DACs as equivalent. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent listening-test results.

| AudioQuest DragonFly Black v1.5 | Portable USB connection; headphone drive and connection to a preamp or AV receiver | Manufacturer specifies native decoding up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Some mobile connections require an appropriate adapter; playback-rate settings can convert or downsample. | A portable USB option where the source supports the connection and the required mobile adapter is available. |
| MoFi StudioDAC | USB-B, coaxial S/PDIF, and Toslink inputs; fixed-level RCA output | Manufacturer lists USB bit depth from 16 to 32 bits and coaxial/optical from 16 to 24 bits, with format support varying by input. Its specifications list 115 dB A-weighted dynamic range. | A desktop setup needing several digital input types and a fixed-level RCA feed to downstream equipment. |

A practical way to decide
- Map your existing chain. Write down the source, its available digital outputs, the destination, and the cables or adapters each connection requires.
- Check whether the source already provides an analog output. If it does, you may already have a usable DAC in the chain. Consider an external one only if you need a different connection, output, control, or headphone-driving arrangement.
- Match inputs and outputs. Confirm that the DAC accepts the source’s signal and provides the correct analog connector and level for the destination.
- Verify headphone requirements. If headphones connect directly, check that a headphone amplifier is built in and compare its published compatibility information with your headphones.
- Confirm the formats for your chosen input. Check the source’s output settings and playback software as well as the DAC specification. Distinguish native playback from resampling, conversion, or downsampling.
- Separate compatibility from sound claims. The specifications can establish whether a unit fits the chain. They do not, on their own, prove that you will hear an improvement over your current setup.
What the available evidence establishes
The cited official pages establish the conversion role of DACs, describe several connection and output arrangements, and publish model-specific format and electrical specifications. They do not establish a universal audible improvement from purchasing an external DAC, nor do they provide an independent comparison showing that one of these examples sounds better than another. Treat product descriptions and headline figures as compatibility information unless supported by relevant comparative evidence.
