Probably not—unless you need a Copilot+ feature or find a specific model whose complete hardware and software fit justify the price. A Copilot+ PC is a defined class of Windows 11 computer with a neural processing unit (NPU) rated at least 40 tera operations per second (TOPS), at least 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, and Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer under Microsoft’s published consumer baseline. It is not simply any Windows laptop that includes an AI application.
The label can matter for features such as on-device Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions translation, improved Windows search, Click to Do, selected Paint and Photos tools, and Recall (preview). It does not guarantee faster performance in every program, longer battery life, universal app compatibility, or fully offline operation. Decide from the features and applications you actually use, then compare the exact laptop configuration.
What is a Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs as a subset of Windows 11 PCs. Its concise distinction is: “All Copilot+ PCs are Windows 11 PCs, but not all Windows 11 PCs are Copilot+ PCs.” The Copilot+ designation identifies hardware capable of running a set of Windows AI experiences; it does not describe every computer that can access Microsoft Copilot through an app or browser.

| Requirement | Microsoft’s published baseline | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| NPU | At least 40 TOPS | The hardware threshold for Copilot+ experiences to function as intended; it is not a universal speed rating for the whole computer. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | The minimum listed for the class. More may be appropriate for large projects, virtual machines or professional applications. |
| Storage | 256 GB SSD | The minimum listed capacity. Windows, applications and media can make a larger drive practical. |
| Operating system | Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer | Feature availability depends on the installed version, updates and rollout timing. |
Microsoft Learn identifies qualifying processor families that include Qualcomm Snapdragon, AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Core Ultra 200V models. Processor branding alone is not proof of eligibility: check the exact model, NPU rating, memory, storage and Windows edition. Requirements, device lists and feature support can change.
What does the 40-TOPS NPU actually do?
An NPU is a processor designed for AI workloads. It can handle supported inference tasks with less demand on the central processing unit (CPU) or graphics processor (GPU). The 40-TOPS figure is an eligibility marker used by Microsoft. It does not tell you that one Copilot+ laptop will render video, compile code or open spreadsheets faster than every conventional Windows PC.
Overall speed still depends on the CPU and GPU model, cooling, memory configuration, storage, display resolution and the workload. Battery life depends on capacity, screen, wireless use, power settings and applications. No universal performance or “all-day battery” result has been established for Copilot+ PCs as a group, so use independent testing for the exact laptop and workload when those factors matter.
Which Copilot+ features could justify buying one?
Microsoft’s Windows 11 feature documentation lists several experiences. Availability can vary by processor, device, region, language, account, subscription, update and internet connection.
Live Captions translation
Live Captions can translate video and audio subtitles into English from more than 40 languages. Microsoft also lists translation from 27 languages into Simplified Chinese. These are stated product capabilities, not an independent assessment of translation accuracy. This feature is most compelling if you regularly attend multilingual meetings, watch foreign-language media or need captions for accessibility.
Windows Studio Effects
Studio Effects can provide camera and microphone enhancements for supported video calls. A compatible camera is required, and the available effects differ by device. Check the camera hardware and the effects listed for the exact model rather than assuming every Copilot+ laptop offers the same controls.
Improved Windows search and Click to Do
Copilot+ systems add AI-assisted ways to find content and act on items in Windows. The practical value depends on how you organize files and whether the actions match your routine. Confirm the current feature list and supported formats in your region before buying for a particular workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPaint and Photos tools
Microsoft lists image creation and editing capabilities such as Paint Cocreator among Copilot+ experiences. Microsoft says Cocreator and several related tools are optimized for English prompts and require a Microsoft or Entra account plus internet access for cloud services used in responsible-AI safeguards. Therefore, “AI PC” does not mean every creative feature runs entirely offline.
Recall (preview)
Recall remains marked as a preview feature in Microsoft’s specifications. It requires Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security, supports only selected languages, and has content and storage limits. Some enterprise policy-management controls require an enterprise license. Treat it as an optional, changing feature rather than a reason to buy hardware without checking the current requirements.
Automatic super resolution
Automatic super resolution is restricted to a curated set of games and particular processor and device combinations. Verify that your game and the exact laptop appear in Microsoft’s current compatibility information; the Copilot+ label alone does not activate it for every title.
Do Copilot+ features run offline?
Some do, some do not. Microsoft’s component documentation describes Phi Silica as a small language model optimized for supported Copilot+ NPUs and local operation. It also says AI components are serviced separately through Windows Update. That demonstrates that selected Windows AI components can run locally, but it is not a guarantee that every Copilot-branded service or feature works without an account, an update or an internet connection.

Will your existing apps and accessories work?
Many Copilot+ laptops use Windows on Arm. Microsoft says most Windows applications can run on Windows 11 Arm computers. Native Arm applications generally provide the best performance; Prism emulates many applications that do not yet have an Arm build.
“Most” is not a compatibility guarantee for your setup. Microsoft identifies possible problems with some customization utilities, input methods, assistive technologies, cloud-storage clients, third-party antivirus programs, games, hardware peripherals and drivers. A program that launches under emulation may still fail if it depends on an unavailable driver or kernel component.
Make a compatibility inventory
- Write down every must-have work application, game, VPN or security client, accessibility tool and unusual utility.
- List printers, scanners, docks, graphics tablets, smart-card readers and other peripherals, including their driver names.
- Check each software publisher and hardware maker for support on the exact processor architecture and Windows 11 version.
- Give extra weight to applications that install drivers, use copy protection, rely on plug-ins or require specialized peripherals. Do not assume Prism emulation fixes those dependencies.
- If one mission-critical item lacks confirmed support, choose a compatible x86 Windows configuration or keep your current computer until the support question is resolved.
How should you compare Copilot+ laptops?
Compare complete configurations, not stickers. Microsoft’s store currently lists products such as Surface Pro, HP OmniBook X Flip, Samsung Galaxy Book5 360 and ASUS Vivobook S 14 OLED. Those listings show that the class includes different form factors and manufacturers; they are not an independent ranking.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |

Retail prices, inventory and promotional offers change. Microsoft cautions that specifications and offers on its shopping pages can change, so record the exact configuration and seller at the time you buy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should choose a Copilot+ PC?
It is a sensible choice when:
- You specifically need a currently supported Copilot+ feature, such as multilingual Live Captions or a particular Studio Effect.
- Your applications and peripherals are confirmed to work on the processor architecture.
- The laptop’s CPU, GPU, screen, keyboard, ports, weight and storage fit your work even without the AI features.
- You value having an NPU for supported local AI functions and accept that Windows features will evolve through updates.
It is usually unnecessary when:
- You only want Microsoft Copilot in a browser or standard Windows application; that does not require the Copilot+ hardware class.
- Your current Windows 11 computer already handles your work and you have no specific eligible feature in mind.
- You depend on an unsupported driver, game, security tool or accessory and cannot verify Arm compatibility.
- You are paying extra for the badge while accepting weaker ports, storage, display quality or application performance than an alternative PC.
What should you verify before ordering?
- Name the outcome. Write the one or two Copilot+ features you expect to use and the problem each solves.
- Confirm the specification. Check the exact processor and NPU rating, RAM, SSD and Windows 11 version against Microsoft’s current requirements.
- Check feature conditions. Look for camera, language, account, subscription, internet, sign-in and document-format requirements.
- Check compatibility. Obtain written support information for critical applications, drivers, games and peripherals.
- Compare the whole laptop. Evaluate display, keyboard, ports, thermals, repairability, warranty and independent performance tests alongside AI capability.
- Recheck at checkout. Confirm the SKU, region, memory and storage because retailer inventory and configurations can change.
Common problems after purchase
A feature is missing
Install current Windows updates, verify that the device meets the feature’s processor and hardware conditions, and check regional and language availability. Some capabilities roll out gradually or remain preview features.
An application runs poorly or will not install
Look for a native Arm build, the publisher’s supported Windows version and any required driver. If the application relies on a kernel component, an emulated application alone may not solve the problem.
A creative tool asks for an account or internet access
That can be expected. Microsoft documents account and connectivity requirements for cloud safeguards in several Paint image features. Do not treat those prompts as evidence that the NPU is defective.

Final decision
Buy a Copilot+ PC when a specific supported feature matters to you or when the exact laptop is the best complete computer for your software, performance and portability needs. Otherwise, a conventional Windows 11 PC that meets your workload can be the better value. Treat 40+ TOPS, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and Windows 11 24H2 or newer as Microsoft’s class baseline—not as a promise of universal speed, compatibility, privacy or battery life—and verify volatile requirements immediately before purchase.
