No. You can photograph the northern lights with a smartphone, and you do not always need a tripod. Modern phones with a Night, Night Sight, or astrophotography mode can make usable aurora images. A tripod becomes increasingly valuable as exposure times get longer, but a hat, book, the ground, or another stable surface can substitute for quick attempts.

A dedicated camera gives you more control and is better suited to planned, repeatable results, yet it is not a requirement. The right setup depends on your phone or camera, how brightly and quickly the aurora is moving, the darkness of your location, and whether you want a quick keepsake or maximum control.

What you actually need

A phone can be enough

NASA has documented an aurora photographed with a handheld iPhone Night Mode exposure of about three seconds. That example proves that a dedicated camera and tripod are not prerequisites, but it does not mean every phone will produce the same quality. Sensor size, camera software, available night modes and the brightness of the display all affect the result.

Recent phones may offer an automatic night mode, a dedicated astrophotography mode or manual controls inside the camera app. The Associated Press describes Night Mode on iPhone 11 and newer, Night Sight and astrophotography behavior on Pixel phones, and Expert RAW options on some Samsung devices. Names, limits and menu paths vary by model and software version, so check the modes available in your own camera app before you travel.

A dedicated camera is useful, not mandatory

A mirrorless or DSLR camera can provide a larger sensor, interchangeable lenses and more direct control over exposure. Those advantages matter when the aurora is dim, when you want a wide composition, or when you need to change settings quickly as the display accelerates. The Canadian Space Agency’s baseline list calls for a camera capable of exposures of at least 10 seconds, a sturdy tripod, a remote or cable release and, ideally, a wide-angle lens. Those are recommendations for a dedicated-camera workflow, not universal minimums for phones or every photographic situation.

A tripod prevents movement during long exposures

Any movement while the shutter is open can make stars and aurora detail look smeared. The longer the exposure, the more important stability becomes. The Canadian Space Agency recommends a sturdy tripod, and NASA says a tripod or another way to stabilize a smartphone is needed for long exposures.

You do not have to buy a tripod for a single attempt. The Associated Press suggests resting a phone on a stable surface such as a hat, book or the ground. A timer helps because pressing the shutter can move the phone even when the support itself is solid. A phone mount on a tripod is more flexible and easier to aim, but a stable surface is a free alternative when the composition allows it.

Choose a setup for your goal

Situation Practical setup What to expect
Quick phone attempt during a bright display Phone night mode; handheld if the exposure is short and your hands are steady Fast to use, but movement and noise may reduce sharpness
Phone exposure lasting several seconds Phone on a tripod or stable surface; use a timer Cleaner detail and less shake; framing is less convenient on an improvised support
Phone with an astrophotography mode Follow the app’s instructions and keep the phone immobile Software may control exposure automatically; exact behavior differs by model
Dim aurora or rapidly changing conditions Dedicated camera, wide-angle lens, sturdy tripod and remote or cable release More manual control and easier adjustment as brightness and motion change
Planned, repeatable landscape images Dedicated camera with tripod and spare power Best control over composition and exposure, with more equipment to carry

Prepare before you leave

Find darkness and an unobstructed sky

City light competes with the aurora and can wash out faint color. NASA’s viewing guidance recommends planning a location with a clear view, checking conditions and considering safe parking. Avoiding clouds is just as important as avoiding light pollution: a strong aurora cannot be photographed through an overcast sky.

Choose a place where you can set down equipment without standing in traffic or near an unsafe edge. A clear horizon helps you include more of the display and the surrounding landscape. If you are unfamiliar with the area, identify the parking and walking route during daylight.

Bring power for the cold

Cold outdoor sessions can drain a phone or camera battery quickly. NASA lists extra power among the useful gear for aurora outings. Carry a charged phone battery pack or spare camera batteries, and keep them protected from the cold until needed. A dead device cannot capture a display that lasts only a few minutes.

Decide how you will stabilize the device

If you plan to use a tripod, confirm that the phone mount fits your phone and that the legs can stand securely on uneven ground. If you are relying on a surface, bring a hat, book or similar item that can support the phone at the angle you need. A timer is useful in either case because it removes the jolt caused by touching the shutter button.

Step-by-step phone workflow

  1. Open the camera app before the display peaks. Confirm whether it offers Night Mode, Night Sight, astrophotography or another low-light setting. Feature names and availability differ by phone.
  2. Turn off the flash. Flash illuminates nearby subjects, not the distant aurora, and can distract people around you.
  3. Compose a wide view. Include enough sky to show the shape of the aurora and, if desired, a foreground such as trees or a building for scale.
  4. Stabilize the phone. Use a tripod, or place the phone on a hat, book, the ground or another firm surface. Handheld capture is most realistic when the phone selects a short exposure and the display is bright.
  5. Set a timer when the app permits it. A short delay gives the phone time to settle after you tap the shutter.
  6. Start with the phone’s automatic night or astrophotography mode. Do not assume that a setting from one brand applies to another. Let the app expose a frame, then inspect it at full size.
  7. Watch for motion blur. If the curtains or rays look smeared, reduce the exposure if your app allows that, or use a mode that captures a shorter frame. If the image is too dark and the aurora is moving slowly, a longer exposure may collect more light.
  8. Capture several frames. The aurora changes quickly, and a sequence gives you a better chance of a sharp moment without requiring a purchase.

Step-by-step dedicated-camera workflow

  1. Use a wide-angle lens when possible. A broad field of view makes it easier to fit an expanding aurora and foreground into one frame.
  2. Mount the camera on a sturdy tripod. Extend and lock the legs securely, and avoid touching the camera while the shutter is open.
  3. Enable a remote or cable release. If you do not have one, use the camera’s self-timer to reduce movement from pressing the shutter.
  4. Confirm that the camera supports long exposures. The Canadian Space Agency’s guide uses at least 10 seconds as a baseline capability for its recommended setup. That figure describes the camera workflow in the guide; it is not a target every scene requires.
  5. Choose a wide composition and make a test frame. Review the aurora, stars and foreground rather than relying only on the rear-screen preview.
  6. Change exposure as the display changes. A bright, slower display may tolerate a longer exposure. A fast curtain may need a shorter exposure to retain folds and rays.
  7. Recheck stability after every adjustment. Moving the tripod, cable or lens hood can introduce shake. Inspect a frame at magnification before committing to a long sequence.

How exposure time changes the result

Exposure is a balance between brightness and motion. A longer exposure gathers more light, which helps when the aurora is faint, but it also records more movement during the same frame. A short exposure preserves rapidly changing structure but may leave a dim scene underexposed.

What you see Try first Reason
Bright, slowly moving bands A longer exposure, provided the device is firmly supported Extra time can collect more light without as much structural blur
Fast curtains, rays or rapidly shifting shapes A shorter exposure Less time records less movement, preserving folds and edges
Dark frame with little visible color Stabilize the device and allow more exposure if the aurora is not moving quickly Light gathering improves, but only when motion will not smear the subject
Blurred aurora or star trails caused by shake Use a tripod or firm surface, a timer or remote release, and shorten the exposure if movement itself is the issue Stability and shutter duration both affect sharpness

There is no universal exposure time for every aurora. NASA and the Canadian Space Agency both emphasize adjusting for motion. Treat the first frame as a test: if the shapes smear, shorten the exposure; if the scene is clean but too dark and the aurora is moving slowly, lengthen it.

When handheld phone photography works

Handheld capture is most plausible when your phone chooses a brief exposure, the phone’s stabilization is effective and the aurora is bright enough that the software does not need to hold the shutter open for many seconds. The NASA example of an approximately three-second handheld iPhone Night Mode frame shows what is possible under suitable conditions.

Handheld shooting becomes less reliable when the app uses a long exposure, when you are tired or standing on unstable ground, or when you want many consistent frames. Even slight wrist movement can soften stars and make the foreground look doubled. If a stable surface is available, use it; there is little advantage in accepting blur when support costs nothing.

Common problems and fixes

The picture is black or much darker than the sky

  • Move away from nearby artificial light and recheck that clouds are not blocking the aurora.
  • Use the phone’s night or astrophotography mode rather than the regular automatic camera mode.
  • On a dedicated camera, allow a longer exposure only if the aurora is moving slowly enough to avoid blur.
  • Review the frame after capture; the live preview can look brighter or darker than the saved image.

The aurora is a blurry green smear

  • Shorten the exposure if the aurora itself is moving quickly.
  • Switch from handheld use to a tripod or stable surface.
  • Use a timer or remote release so tapping the shutter does not shake the device.

The stars or foreground are smeared even though the aurora looks bright

  • Check whether the support moved during the exposure.
  • Keep the phone or camera untouched until the frame finishes.
  • Use a sturdier tripod position or a flatter surface, and repeat the frame.

The phone does not show an astrophotography option

Not every phone includes the same feature. Look for a night or low-light mode, check whether a manual or specialist camera app supplied by the phone maker is available, and follow that app’s own instructions. The AP examples for iPhone, Pixel and Samsung illustrate how different the controls can be; they are not a guarantee that another model has the same modes.

Do you need to buy anything?

For a first attempt, no purchase is required. Use the phone you already have, its night-capable mode and a stable surface. A tripod with a phone mount is an optional convenience when you expect repeated long exposures, want precise framing or need to keep the phone aimed at one part of the sky. For a dedicated camera, a sturdy tripod and remote or cable release are practical parts of the recommended setup, while a wide-angle lens is desirable rather than an absolute rule.

Spend on support only after identifying the limitation that is ruining your frames. If the image is bright but blurred, stability or a shorter exposure is the answer. If it is sharp but too dark, a longer exposure, a brighter display or a device with stronger low-light capability matters more than a tripod alone.

A simple decision rule

  1. Have a modern phone with a night or astrophotography mode? Start with it; a camera purchase is unnecessary for an experiment.
  2. Is the phone exposure short and the aurora bright? Try handheld capture, then compare it with a supported frame.
  3. Is the exposure several seconds or longer? Use a tripod or stable surface and a timer.
  4. Do you need manual control, a very dim-scene solution or repeatable landscape work? A dedicated camera, wide-angle lens, tripod and remote release provide a more controllable setup.
  5. Are fast curtains losing their shape? Shorten the exposure, even if that produces a darker frame.
