No. A 60 Hz TV is enough to display a game running at 60 frames per second (FPS). A 120 Hz TV matters when you want to play compatible games at up to 120 FPS; it does not turn a 60 FPS game into one with twice as many game-rendered frames.
What FPS and Hz mean for your game
FPS describes how many new frames the game renders each second. Hz describes how many times the screen refreshes each second. They are related, but they measure different parts of the system.
A 60 Hz TV can show a 60 FPS signal. On a 120 Hz TV, a 60 FPS game’s frames may be shown across repeated refreshes. The screen does not create a second, independently rendered game frame. A TV’s motion interpolation, if available, is separate image processing and is not the same as native 120 FPS gameplay.
When a 120 Hz TV makes a difference
A 120 Hz TV is useful if your console and the particular game mode can output above 60 FPS. Xbox Series X supports up to 120 FPS as an option for developers, but each game determines whether it offers a 120 FPS mode. PlayStation’s guidance likewise says to enable 120 Hz output for a TV and games that support it. See Xbox’s explanation of next-generation gaming features and PlayStation’s PS5 resolution guide.

If your games run at a steady 60 FPS, a 120 Hz TV is not required to see those 60 frames. Its value in that situation depends on other features and on the exact TV and signal path.
Can 120 Hz reduce input lag at 60 FPS?
Possibly, but it is not a guaranteed improvement across TVs. Microsoft says HDMI frame-transmission time is 16.6 ms at 60 Hz and 8.3 ms at 120 Hz, and explains that the shorter transmission interval can benefit games at different frame rates. Those figures describe Microsoft’s signal-transmission comparison—not total controller-to-screen input lag, nor proof that every 120 Hz TV will feel more responsive than every 60 Hz model. Game processing, console output, TV processing, Game Mode, and the connection path also affect responsiveness. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X latency explanation.

For a specific TV, look for independent input-lag measurements in Game Mode at the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. A panel’s refresh-rate label alone does not establish its total input lag.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the game’s output. It can help smooth games whose frame delivery varies and reduce tearing, but it does not make a 60 FPS game render more frames. Xbox describes VRR as synchronizing display refresh to game frame rate; PlayStation notes that PS5 VRR results vary by TV and game. See PlayStation’s PS5 features page.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
ALLM can switch a compatible TV into a low-latency mode when a supported device is connected. It is a display-mode convenience, not a way to increase a game’s FPS. Whether it is available depends on the TV, console, and connection.
What to check before buying or changing settings
- Native refresh rate: Check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact TV model. Do not assume a marketing motion-rate label means the panel natively refreshes at 120 Hz.
- Resolution at 120 Hz: Confirm that the TV supports the resolution and refresh-rate combination you want. Support can differ by model and HDMI input.
- Your games and console settings: Look for a 120 FPS mode in the games you actually play, and check that your console and TV support the required output. On PS5, the resolution guide includes connected HDMI device capability information and the 120 Hz output setting.
- VRR compatibility: If you want VRR, confirm compatibility across the console, TV, selected HDMI port, and any receiver or soundbar in the path.
- Input lag: Compare measurements for the exact model in Game Mode, rather than inferring responsiveness from refresh rate alone.
- HDMI ports and the whole connection chain: Some TVs support key features only on selected inputs. Microsoft recommends checking the TV manual; an AV receiver or soundbar can also affect which modes pass through. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is included with Xbox Series X, according to Microsoft, but replace a cable only if your existing cable or signal path cannot carry the mode you need.
Should you upgrade for 60 FPS gaming?
If your goal is simply to play at 60 FPS, keep a working 60 Hz TV: it can display that output. Consider a 120 Hz model if you want compatible games to run above 60 FPS or if the particular TV offers other benefits you have verified, such as suitable VRR support or lower measured input lag. The right choice depends on the games, output mode, TV model, and connection—not on 60 FPS by itself.
