Usually, no. Ordinary 3.5 mm wired earbuds send analog audio directly through a compatible headphone jack and normally have no companion app or user-updatable firmware. USB-C and Lightning earbuds are more dependent on the host device, operating-system support and adapter type. A few digital or feature-rich wired models do contain updateable electronics, but an update is generally tied to a specific model and documented problem—not a routine requirement for every pair.
What “wired earbuds” can mean
The connector determines much of the answer. “Wired” describes the physical connection, not a single technical design. Earbuds may use an analog 3.5 mm plug, a Lightning connector, or USB-C. The latter two can carry digital audio and may include a small digital-to-analog converter, microphone circuitry, buttons, noise-cancellation electronics or other firmware-controlled components.
| Connection | Signal path | Typical software expectation | Primary compatibility check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm | Analog audio from the device’s headphone output or adapter | No app and normally no firmware updates | Compatible headphone jack or a suitable audio adapter |
| Lightning | Digital connection to compatible Apple devices | No general earbud app requirement; device and operating-system requirements apply | Lightning support and the required iOS version |
| USB-C | Usually digital audio, with the host supplying or negotiating audio support | Usually plug-and-play, but model-specific software or firmware is possible | USB-C digital-audio support, not merely a USB-C-shaped port |
Firmware is the embedded software that operates electronics inside the earbuds. An app is a separate control interface. A product can have one without the other: for example, inline buttons and active noise cancellation may work through hardware controls even when the manufacturer offers no app.

A conventional 3.5 mm pair does not contain a network connection or a general-purpose software platform that needs regular maintenance. Insert the plug into a standard headphone jack, select the output if your device asks, and audio should work without installing anything. Apple’s wired-headphone documentation lists its 3.5 mm EarPods for devices with a standard headphone jack: Apple’s wired-headphone requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
The main qualification is the device at the other end. Many current phones omit a 3.5 mm socket, so you may need an adapter. The adapter must provide the right audio path, and its microphone or remote-control wiring may not behave identically to a built-in jack. A passive-looking plug does not guarantee that every phone, tablet or computer will support headset controls.
There is no reason to search an app store for a routine “3.5 mm earbud update.” If one side is silent, the likely causes are a loose plug, debris, a damaged cable, a muted or misrouted output, a bad jack or an incompatible adapter—not obsolete earbud firmware.
Lightning earbuds: connector and iOS requirements
Lightning earbuds are digital accessories rather than ordinary analog plugs. Apple lists Lightning EarPods as requiring iOS 10 or later and describes compatible Lightning adapters in its support material: Apple’s wired-headphone guide. Those are host-device requirements, not a standing instruction to update the earbuds.

Connect them directly to a supported Lightning device and test playback. If audio works but a remote button or microphone does not, check the documentation for both the earbuds and the host. Apple notes that some controls may not work with earlier products. A control limitation is different from a missing firmware update: the hardware, wiring standard or device support may simply not expose that function.
USB-C earbuds: the port shape is not enough
USB-C is a connector standard, not a promise that a device accepts USB-C audio. Google’s Pixel instructions say to make sure the device uses USB-C digital audio: Pixel USB-C earbud setup. Bose likewise warns that some USB-C ports do not provide audio: Bose’s USB-C wired-earbud connection guidance.
Before blaming the earbuds, verify the phone, tablet, computer or console’s specifications. Some devices require USB-C audio to be enabled; others reserve particular USB-C ports for charging, data or video. Call support can vary as well. Google notes that some devices may not allow calls through USB-C earbuds even when media playback works.

USB-C models can include more electronics than a 3.5 mm pair. That makes model-specific firmware technically possible, but it still does not create a universal update obligation. Look for an update only when the manufacturer documents one for your exact model, host device and symptom.

Do ANC and inline controls require an app?
No automatic rule links advanced controls to an app. A wired product can put its controls in the cable or earbud housing and operate them locally. Belkin states that its SoundForm ANC Wired Earbuds (USB-C) are “plug-and-play on supported USB-C devices” and that inline controls switch active-noise-cancellation and hear-through modes. That statement applies to that named model, not to every USB-C ANC product: Belkin’s SoundForm ANC Wired Earbuds FAQ.
Some feature-rich products may offer optional software for equalizer settings, firmware delivery or diagnostics. Optional software can add convenience without being required for basic playback. Belkin’s FAQ also conditions Hi-Res playback on device and app support, illustrating why a feature claim must be checked against the exact product and host combination.

When a wired-earbud firmware update really matters
Samsung documents a concrete exception for some older Samsung USB-C earphones used with Galaxy S23 phones. The reported symptoms are intermittent sound, lockups or sound lag. Samsung says, “If this occurs, it can be easily resolved by updating the earphones firmware,” and provides a procedure that uses the phone’s earphone notification flow. The support page was last updated January 31, 2023: Samsung’s Galaxy S23 USB-C earphone troubleshooting page.
That example establishes three useful boundaries. First, updateable firmware can exist in a wired USB-C accessory. Second, the update is associated with a documented compatibility problem and a defined phone/earphone combination. Third, it does not establish a recurring maintenance schedule for all wired earbuds. Samsung’s general instructions for connecting USB-C headphones to Galaxy devices are separate from this issue-specific procedure: Samsung’s USB-C headphone connection guide.

Step-by-step troubleshooting before looking for an update
- Identify the connector. Record whether the plug is 3.5 mm, Lightning or USB-C. Also note whether an adapter, dock or hub is in the chain.
- Confirm the host audio path. A 3.5 mm set needs a functioning headphone output. Lightning earbuds need a supported Lightning device and operating system. USB-C earbuds need USB-C digital-audio support; the presence of the port alone proves nothing. Use the host manufacturer’s specifications and the relevant Google USB-C guidance or Bose connection guidance as applicable.
- Remove unnecessary intermediaries. Test the earbuds directly instead of through a monitor, dock, splitter or hub. Each additional device can change power, audio-routing or microphone behavior.
- Check the adapter’s direction and function. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter is intended to connect 3.5 mm headphones to a USB-C host. Apple documents such an adapter for that use: Apple’s adapter information. Adapter compatibility is not universal, so verify that it supports audio and, if needed, microphone and remote controls.
- Test basic playback first. Play a known audio file, raise the device volume and select the wired output. If both channels work, the connection is fundamentally established; investigate controls or calls separately.
- Test the microphone, calls and buttons independently. A device can play music while rejecting headset calls or failing to pass inline commands. Google documents call-support variation for USB-C earbuds, and Apple notes that some controls may not work on earlier products.
- Inspect physical causes. Reseat the plug, clean lint from the jack without forcing objects into it, look for cable damage and try a second compatible device. Do not assume an intermittent cable is a software fault.
- Search the exact support page. Use the full model name, host device and symptom. Install firmware only when the manufacturer supplies a matching instruction, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S23 procedure.
Choosing between connection types
| Reader need | What to verify | Likely software issue |
|---|---|---|
| Simple music and podcasts | Jack or adapter delivers audio | Very unlikely with 3.5 mm; usually none with supported Lightning or USB-C |
| Phone calls | Host supports the earbud microphone and call routing | Call support may be limited by the device, especially over USB-C |
| Inline volume or playback buttons | Wiring and host recognize the control protocol | Controls can fail even when audio works; an update is not automatically the fix |
| Active noise cancellation or hear-through | Product-specific controls and power behavior | Some models may have optional software; others operate plug-and-play |
| Intermittent sound, lag or lockups | Exact model, phone model and documented symptoms | Check for a model-specific firmware remedy, such as Samsung’s documented case |
What an app can and cannot do
An app can expose settings that are otherwise hidden, deliver a firmware package, show battery or diagnostic information, or configure equalization. It cannot make an incompatible electrical or digital-audio path compatible. Installing software will not turn a USB-C charging-only port into a USB-C audio port, replace a missing digital-to-analog converter, repair a broken cable or guarantee microphone support.
For ordinary listening, begin with the device specification and connection. Treat an app as a model-specific utility, not a prerequisite implied by the word “wired.” If the product page says “plug-and-play,” follow that claim for the supported devices and retain the manufacturer’s instructions in case a documented update becomes necessary.
How to decide whether to update
- Do not update: playback works, the manufacturer lists no update for your model, and you are only looking for routine maintenance.
- Investigate compatibility: playback fails immediately, the host may lack USB-C digital audio, or an adapter is involved. Resolve the connection path first.
- Check for a firmware remedy: the exact support page names your model, host device and symptom, and supplies an official update process.
- Stop and seek manufacturer support: the update fails, the accessory disconnects during installation, or the instructions do not match your hardware. Do not substitute firmware from a similar-looking model.
The practical rule is simple: a conventional analog pair is a passive listening accessory; digital wired earbuds are peripherals whose compatibility belongs to the host device and, occasionally, to model-specific firmware. Follow the exact documentation only when the product’s design and symptoms warrant it.
