Video games are not shown to cause brain damage in everyone who plays. The clearest concern is a persistent pattern of gaming that a person cannot control, that crowds out important parts of life, and that continues despite harm. Research links symptoms of this pattern most consistently with depression, but it does not establish that gaming alone causes depression or permanent brain changes.

What does “negative effects” mean?

It helps to separate playing games—even for long periods—from gaming that has become difficult to control and is harming a person’s life. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines gaming disorder by three features: impaired control over gaming; gaming taking priority over other interests and daily activities; and continuing or escalating play despite negative consequences. For a diagnosis, the pattern must cause significant impairment in important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.

Hours alone do not establish gaming disorder. WHO says the condition affects only a small proportion of people who play digital or video games. The relevant question is whether play is persistently displacing daily responsibilities or coinciding with significant changes in health or social functioning. (World Health Organization, “Gaming disorder: Frequently Asked Questions,” ICD-11.)

What do studies say about depression and other mental-health outcomes?

A 2024 systematic review by Düll, Müller, and Steins-Loeber examined 48 longitudinal studies—research that follows people over time. The most consistent association was between gaming-disorder symptoms and depression. The findings do not show that gaming is the sole cause: depressive symptoms may come first, gaming difficulties may come first, or both may develop together amid other influences.

Among the 21 studies in that review that examined depression, the reported patterns were:

Finding reported by the studies Number of studies
Did not find gaming-disorder symptoms preceding depression 7
Found gaming-disorder symptoms predicted later depression 6
Linked increases in gaming-disorder symptoms with later increases in depressive scores 3
Found reciprocal associations between gaming-disorder symptoms and depression 5

These counts describe the findings of individual studies, not a pooled estimate of risk or the likelihood that a particular player will become depressed. The review did not combine results in a meta-analysis because the studies and measures varied.

The review also examined anxiety, distress, life satisfaction, loneliness, ADHD symptoms, aggression, school performance, relationships, and physical health. Evidence in these areas was less consistent or more limited. For school performance, three studies found no causal relationship, while four reported later GPA deterioration. Evidence concerning physical health was sparse and mixed. These are not established outcomes for every person who games.

Do brain scans show that gaming damages the brain?

No. A 2021 systematic review in JMIR Serious Games assessed 18 neuroimaging studies involving professional gamers and people with gaming-disorder symptoms. It reported differences in brain structure or activity in selected groups, but those observations are not proof of injury or permanent damage.

The review described different patterns across populations. Professional gamers showed improvements in some measured cognitive functions, including attention and sensorimotor function. People with gaming-disorder symptoms showed patterns associated with weaker cognitive control and stronger gaming cravings, as well as evidence of skill acquisition. The studies were limited, and most were cross-sectional: they captured a group at a point in time rather than showing how an individual’s brain changed before and after gaming. Researchers therefore could not determine whether gaming caused the observed differences, whether pre-existing traits contributed, or whether the differences represented harm.

It would go beyond this evidence to say ordinary gaming shrinks the brain, destroys neurons, negatively rewires everyone, or causes permanent brain damage.

Can gaming affect attention or cognition?

The evidence does not support a simple claim that gaming uniformly worsens cognition. In an NIH account of a cross-sectional study of children, those who reported playing at least three hours a day performed better on some cognitive measures than children who reported no gaming. They also had higher scores on some attention, depression, and ADHD measures, but those scores did not meet clinical thresholds.

Because the study measured children at one point in time, it cannot establish that gaming caused either the better test performance or the higher symptom scores. Its findings may also depend on activities or game types, but the study did not assess genre-specific effects. The NIH page records a 2023 retraction and replacement notice and says key findings were retained. (National Institutes of Health, “Video gaming may be associated with better cognitive performance in children,” 2022.)

A separate 2023 pediatric review by Daniel Alanko reported that children aged 8 to 17 spent an average of 1.5 to 2 hours a day playing video games. That is a review-reported estimate, not a current universal benchmark, a recommended limit, or evidence of a safe or harmful number of hours.

When should gaming become a concern?

Pay attention to sustained changes in day-to-day life rather than relying on an hours cutoff. WHO advises noticing when gaming excludes other daily activities or coincides with changes in physical or psychological health or social functioning.

  • Gaming repeatedly takes priority over responsibilities, relationships, or other interests.
  • The person has difficulty controlling play and continues despite clear negative consequences.
  • There are significant or persistent changes in mood, health, school or work functioning, or social life.

These signs are reasons to take the situation seriously, not a way to diagnose someone from a checklist. If the pattern is persistent and significantly affecting functioning, discuss it with a qualified health professional. A fixed daily limit cannot determine by itself whether an individual’s gaming is harmful; the available sources do not establish a universal safe or harmful number of hours.
