Sometimes, but not automatically. A mains-only video door phone stops when its power supply fails. A battery-equipped unit may continue showing visitors locally, yet remote unlocking, cloud recording, app alerts and live viewing also depend on the router, modem or ONT, firewall and any PoE switch or injector. The electric strike or maglock has a separate power requirement. Reliable outage operation therefore requires a backup plan for the entire power and network chain, not just the camera or indoor monitor.
What a power cut does to a video door phone
The result is determined by the system’s power topology. A wired outdoor station, indoor monitor and controller normally receive low-voltage power from a mains-fed adapter or power supply. When that supply drops out, the devices shut down unless a UPS, battery-backed access-control supply or an internal battery keeps them energized. DOOR’s outage guidance states that wired devices need constant power and that its wired intercom loses power unless backup is provided.
Loss of the intercom is only one possible failure. A door phone that still has battery power cannot communicate with a powered-off network, and a powered network cannot release a lock whose supply has failed. Treat the installation as several linked loads rather than one appliance.

In a conventional wired system, the outdoor camera, call button, indoor screen and controller all stop when their adapter or distribution supply is off. The visitor may hear no ring, the resident sees no video, and an unlock command cannot be processed. Urmet lists a 230 Vac, 50 Hz, 38 VA supply for one basic video-door-phone system; that figure describes the specified supply requirement, not guaranteed outage runtime.

Battery-equipped stations
Some doorbells and compact intercoms include a rechargeable battery. The ENFORCER DP-236Q manual says its camera battery acts as a backup during an outage. Yale similarly states that the internal battery in its Smart Video Doorbell remains charged from mains and powers the doorbell when mains fails. These statements establish fallback operation, not a universal number of hours. Runtime varies with camera activity, infrared illumination, wireless radio use, temperature, battery age and the functions enabled on the exact model.
Local operation versus remote operation
A battery-backed camera may continue to detect a visitor or ring a paired indoor unit on a local circuit. App notifications, cloud recording, remote live view and phone-based unlocking require the local network and the internet path to remain powered. If the router, firewall, modem or optical network terminal (ONT) is off, the door station may appear healthy while every cloud feature is unreachable.
Back up the complete power and network chain
ButterflyMX’s access-control guidance says that maintaining full operation during an outage requires backup power for every component in the chain, not only the intercom and controller. Inventory each load before choosing a UPS.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Component | What fails without it | Backup question |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor station or doorbell | No camera, call button, microphone or visitor detection | Is it mains-fed, PoE, or internally battery-backed? |
| Indoor monitor | No local ring or video display | Does its adapter or distribution rail connect to the UPS? |
| Controller or door-release module | No authentication or unlock command | Is its supply separate from the monitor? |
| PoE switch or injector | A PoE station loses both power and network connectivity | Are all PoE ports and the injector on backed-up power? |
| Router and firewall | No local IP path, app connection or remote administration | Do their power adapters share the UPS? |
| Modem or ISP ONT | No internet route for cloud alerts and remote viewing | Will the ISP equipment remain online during the outage? |
| Electric strike or maglock supply | The lock may remain locked, release, or become inoperable | Is the lock power supply separately backed up and correctly rated? |
A UPS connected only to the intercom is insufficient when the network or lock supply is elsewhere. Use one appropriately sized UPS, or coordinated listed battery supplies, so that every required component has power for the same outage window. Keep network equipment within the UPS load; a battery camera cannot create app connectivity by itself.

Will the door unlock during an outage?
Lock behavior depends on the hardware type, wiring and the site’s life-safety design. Confirm the actual lock and controller rather than assuming every installation behaves alike.
Electric strikes: commonly fail-secure
ButterflyMX describes typical electric strikes as fail-secure: without power, the strike remains locked from the outside. A backed-up controller and strike supply can continue authorized release, but only if the battery system can deliver the strike’s voltage and current during activation.
Maglocks: commonly fail-safe
Magnetic locks are commonly wired fail-safe, meaning they release when power is removed. This can permit egress during a power failure, but it also means an unbacked maglock may unlock as soon as the supply fails. The cited guidance warns that the actual installation must be verified; local fire, accessibility and egress rules may dictate the acceptable arrangement.
Document the real behavior
Record whether the lock is a strike, maglock or another mechanism; whether the controller switches power or a dry contact; and what happens when mains, UPS output and network connectivity are removed separately. A door that unlocks from an indoor exit button may still reject a remote command when the controller or network is down.

How to choose and size backup power
There is no industry-wide runtime figure for video door phones. The published material provides no independent outage-duration statistic, so use the exact model’s battery specification when one exists and measure the installed load for a UPS design.
- List every load. Include the outdoor unit, indoor monitor, controller, PoE switch or injector, router, firewall, modem or ONT, and lock power supply. Note each device’s input voltage, current or wattage and whether its draw is continuous or intermittent.
- Separate essential and optional functions. Decide whether the outage objective is local calling, video, controlled unlocking, app alerts, cloud recording, or all of them. Cloud features require the network and internet equipment; a local-only objective may need less equipment on battery.
- Measure real consumption. Use the operating load, including night infrared lighting, display brightness and a lock-release event. Do not size from the adapter’s maximum label alone, and do not assume the 38 VA Urmet figure applies to another model.
- Check startup and surge capacity. A UPS must tolerate the inrush of switch-mode adapters and the short, higher-current pulse of an electric strike. Verify the UPS output waveform and transfer behavior against the manufacturers’ requirements.
- Set a target runtime. Base it on the site’s typical outage duration and the safe state required for the door. Battery runtime falls as load rises and as batteries age; obtain a model-specific runtime chart or test the installed configuration.
- Provide monitoring and maintenance. Use UPS alarms or network monitoring where available. Schedule battery replacement according to the UPS and access-control manufacturer, and test after replacement.
For a battery doorbell, do not infer runtime from another brand or from a phone power bank. The ENFORCER and Yale documentation confirms backup capability but does not establish a common duration for all installations.
Voltage, adapters and electrical safety requirements
Use the power source specified for the exact model. Dahua’s video-door-phone quick-start guidance requires the supplied or correctly rated adapter, SELV power meeting IEC 62368-1, protective earthing where specified and compliance with local electrical codes. Yale’s support documentation specifies a compatible 8–24 V DC supply and warns not to connect 110–240 V mains directly to the doorbell terminals.

- Use an approved replacement adapter with matching voltage, adequate current capacity and the correct connector and polarity.
- Do not place mains voltage on a low-voltage doorbell or intercom terminal.
- Keep mains wiring, low-voltage wiring and outdoor cable entries protected as required by local code.
- Provide protective earthing and residual-current protection where the equipment and regulations require them.
- Have a licensed electrician or qualified access-control installer perform mains work, panel work and any installation subject to local permitting.
A UPS does not make an incorrectly rated adapter safe. It only keeps that adapter energized, so every downstream component still has to meet its own electrical specification.

Installation procedure for outage-ready operation
- Map the system. Identify the outdoor station, indoor monitor, controller, PoE switch or injector, router, firewall, modem or ONT, lock and every power supply. Photograph labels and note which outlet feeds each item.
- Read the exact manuals. Confirm voltage, current, battery limits, earthing, environmental rating and supported backup method. Do not substitute a generic adapter because its plug fits.
- Choose the backup architecture. Put all required electronics on an appropriately sized UPS or use listed battery-backed access-control supplies designed for the lock and controller. Keep the network path on backup if app or cloud functions matter.
- Connect the lock correctly. Verify whether the device is fail-secure or fail-safe, how the relay is wired and whether the backup supply can handle the release current. Follow fire and egress requirements for the building.
- Label circuits and bypass points. Mark the UPS outlets, lock supply, battery disconnect and network equipment so a responder can identify what remains powered during an outage.
- Restore normal power and charge batteries. Allow internal and UPS batteries to reach the manufacturer’s stated charge condition before testing. Check for fault indicators or low-battery alarms.
- Run a controlled outage test. With occupants and security staff informed, remove mains to the backed-up circuit and test every required function before declaring the system ready.
What to test after installation
Simulate an outage at a quiet time and record the result for each function:
- Press the call button and confirm the expected local ring.
- Verify two-way audio and indoor video, including night operation if relevant.
- Attempt an authorized unlock from the indoor monitor.
- Check the physical lock response and confirm the documented fail-safe or fail-secure state.
- Attempt an app notification, live view and remote unlock while the router, firewall and modem remain on UPS.
- Disconnect the internet path while keeping local power on to distinguish network failures from intercom failures.
- Observe UPS load, alarms and battery-estimated runtime.
- Restore mains and verify that all devices reconnect without manual reconfiguration.
Repeat the test after changing the router, PoE switch, lock, adapter or battery. A system that passed when new can lose runtime as batteries age or as additional network equipment is added.

The camera works, but the app shows offline
The door station’s battery is operating, but the router, firewall, modem or ONT is not backed up, or the ISP service is unavailable. Place the complete network path on UPS and test internet reconnection separately from local video.
The indoor monitor rings, but unlocking fails
The controller or lock supply may be outside the backup circuit, or the UPS may not handle the strike’s release current. Trace the unlock relay and measure the lock supply under load.

The lock opens as soon as power fails
This is consistent with a fail-safe maglock, but it may also indicate a wiring fault or an unintended loss of a holding circuit. Verify the lock type and have the installer check life-safety compliance.
The battery unit shuts down quickly
High motion activity, infrared lighting, weak Wi-Fi, cold temperatures or an aged battery can increase consumption. Check the model’s specified runtime conditions, inspect battery health and measure actual load; do not assume another model’s figures apply.
The replacement adapter causes resets
An adapter can have the wrong voltage, insufficient current, incorrect polarity or excessive cable drop. Replace it with the manufacturer-specified or explicitly compatible supply and inspect the cable run.

Key decisions before you rely on the system
- Define whether “working” means local conversation, video, remote alerts, cloud recording, remote unlock or every function.
- Verify every power and network dependency, including equipment that may be installed in another room or building.
- Use the exact voltage, current, earthing and battery requirements in the model manual.
- Confirm the lock’s real fail-safe or fail-secure behavior with the installer and applicable safety rules.
- Size backup from measured load and a stated runtime target, then validate it with a simulated outage.
