Sometimes. A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter needs a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) when the phone, tablet or computer sends digital USB audio. A passive adapter can work only when the host supports USB-C analog audio accessory mode and sends analog audio through the connector. USB-C by itself does not tell you which audio path a device supports.

The short answer depends on the host device

Traditional 3.5 mm headphones receive an analog left-and-right audio signal. USB-C can carry either digital audio data or analog headset signals, so an adapter may need to perform very different jobs.

  • Digital USB audio: The host sends digital audio. A DAC inside the adapter converts it into the analog signal required by the 3.5 mm socket.
  • Analog audio accessory mode: The host puts analog headset signals on designated USB-C pins. A passive adapter can route those signals to a 3.5 mm jack without converting them.

Therefore, a DAC-equipped, sometimes called “active,” adapter is the safe type when the host’s documentation says it outputs digital USB audio or requires a DAC. A passive adapter is suitable only when the exact host model supports analog audio accessory mode.

How the two USB-C audio paths work

Digital audio converted in the adapter

With digital USB audio, the operating system treats the adapter as a USB audio device. Audio samples travel over USB to the adapter, whose DAC creates the analog waveform for the 3.5 mm headphones. The adapter may also contain an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for a headset microphone.

The Android Open Source Project’s USB-C-to-analog adapter specification describes two-channel digital-to-analog conversion for stereo output and one-channel analog-to-digital conversion for microphone input. It also covers insertion and microphone detection, output-impedance detection, and translation of headset-button presses into HID events. Those capabilities are separate from simply producing sound, so check them when you need calls, voice recording or media controls.

Analog audio accessory mode

In analog audio accessory mode, the host routes analog headset signals through USB-C connector pins. The adapter is essentially a wiring breakout: it connects those pins to the 3.5 mm contacts. No DAC in the adapter is needed because conversion has already happened inside the host.

Appendix A of the USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification, Release 1.3 (July 14, 2017), describes this mode as multiplexing four analog audio signals over connector pins. The specification also says a host implementing analog audio accessory mode shall support USB Type-C digital audio with nominally equivalent functionality and performance. That requirement does not mean every USB-C host implements analog mode; support remains model-specific.

Passive versus DAC-equipped adapters

Adapter type What the host sends What the adapter does When it works
Passive analog adapter Analog headset signals through USB-C accessory mode Routes existing analog signals to the 3.5 mm socket Only on hosts that explicitly support analog audio accessory mode
DAC-equipped (active) adapter Digital USB audio Converts digital output to analog; may convert microphone input back to digital On hosts that support the documented USB digital-audio adapter type and the adapter’s required headset functions

A passive adapter cannot create analog audio from a digital-only USB-C port. Conversely, buying an active adapter does not guarantee compatibility: the host must recognize USB audio, and the adapter must support the host’s headset, microphone and control requirements.

What Android requires

The Android Open Source Project’s USB-C-to-analog adapter documentation states: Only digital-to-analog adapters are allowed. This is a requirement for the documented Android adapter type, not a universal rule for every USB-C product or operating system. Android’s platform guidance describes an adapter that receives digital USB audio and performs the conversion externally; analog-only adapters described in the cited USB specification appendix are not supported by that adapter specification.

Android’s USB digital-audio documentation explains that audio can route to USB in accessory mode. Moving the DAC and final analog stages onto an external circuit board can isolate those stages from electrical noise on the device’s main board. That is a design rationale, not evidence that every external DAC sounds better than every built-in circuit. Sound quality depends on the complete host, adapter, headphones and implementation.

What Samsung Galaxy guidance means

Samsung UK’s support page, updated August 12, 2026, says that some Galaxy devices need a USB Type-C to 3.5 mm headset-jack converter with a built-in DAC. It advises checking that a third-party adapter is DAC-compatible and identifies Samsung’s own converter as an option.

This is Samsung guidance for affected Galaxy models, not a rule for all USB-C devices. Galaxy compatibility can vary by model, market and software. Read the support page or specifications for your exact phone before choosing a passive adapter.

How to choose the right adapter for your device

1. Identify the exact host model

Record the complete model name and number, not just the product family. A phone series can contain regional or generation-specific variants with different audio implementations. Start with the manufacturer’s manual, support page or technical specifications.

2. Look for the audio-mode wording

Search the documentation for terms such as “USB digital audio,” “USB audio,” “DAC adapter required,” “analog audio accessory mode” or “3.5 mm adapter.” If the manufacturer explicitly requires a built-in DAC, use an active adapter. If it explicitly lists analog accessory-mode support, a passive adapter may work.

3. Match headset functions

Decide whether you need only stereo playback or also a microphone and inline controls. Android’s documented adapter behavior includes microphone input, insertion and microphone detection, output-impedance detection and headset-button events. A listing that mentions only stereo output may not provide the other functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check USB audio compatibility

For an active adapter, verify that the host supports the adapter’s USB audio class or implementation. Compatibility wording should name the relevant device family rather than promise support for every USB-C product.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

5. Treat extra ports as separate features

Adapters that add charging, data passthrough or multiple connectors have additional compatibility requirements. Do not assume that an adapter that handles audio will also support charging at the expected rate or pass USB data correctly; verify each function for the host model.

Will a USB-C headphone adapter work with your phone?

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Check the phone’s official documentation for DAC or USB-audio requirements.
  2. If it requires digital USB audio, choose a DAC-equipped adapter and confirm microphone and button support if needed.
  3. If it supports analog audio accessory mode, a passive adapter can work, provided its wiring and headset contacts match the phone.
  4. If the documentation is silent, do not infer compatibility from the presence of USB-C. Prefer an adapter whose manufacturer lists the exact model and states whether a DAC is built in.
  5. After connecting it, select the USB audio output if the operating system displays an audio-device prompt, then test playback, the microphone and inline controls separately.

Common failure symptoms and likely causes

No sound with a passive adapter

The most likely cause is that the host provides digital USB audio only and does not expose analog accessory mode. Replace the passive adapter with a DAC-equipped model listed as compatible with the host. If the host documentation does support analog mode, inspect the adapter’s wiring and test another known-compatible passive adapter.

Sound works but the microphone does not

The adapter may support stereo output without an ADC, or it may not implement the headset microphone-detection and impedance behavior expected by the host. Check the adapter specification for microphone input and CTIA headset support, then test the microphone in a recorder or call rather than relying on playback alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buttons do not control playback

Inline buttons require the adapter and operating system to recognize headset events. Android’s documented adapter type translates those events to HID events, but not every adapter implements that path. Confirm button-event support and test volume, play/pause and call controls individually.

The phone repeatedly connects and disconnects

Intermittent behavior can result from an adapter that the host does not recognize, a damaged USB-C connection or an adapter drawing functions the host does not support. Remove other USB accessories, update the host software where the manufacturer recommends it, and compare with a model-specific DAC adapter.

Charging or data passthrough fails

Audio compatibility does not establish charging or data compatibility. Check the accessory’s specifications for passthrough support and the host’s limits. A simple audio adapter may intentionally provide neither function.

Does an external DAC improve sound quality?

Not automatically. An external DAC relocates conversion and analog circuitry, which can help a design isolate those stages from noise on a crowded device circuit board. Android documents that rationale, but the documentation does not establish a universal audible improvement or a performance ranking among adapters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a practical decision, treat the DAC first as a compatibility requirement. Compare implementation details only after confirming that the adapter works with the host and supports the functions you need. Headphone sensitivity, output level, impedance handling and the adapter’s own analog design can matter as much as the fact that a DAC is present.

Questions to ask before buying

  • Does the exact phone, tablet or computer output digital USB audio or analog accessory-mode audio?
  • Does the adapter contain a DAC, and is that DAC required by the host?
  • Is the exact host model named as compatible?
  • Does it support a headset microphone, microphone detection and inline buttons?
  • Are charging and data passthrough required, and are those functions separately documented?
  • Is compatibility stated for the relevant region, model variant and software environment?

Bottom line

A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter needs a DAC when the host sends digital USB audio. A passive adapter works only when the host supports USB-C analog audio accessory mode. Android’s documented adapter type permits digital-to-analog adapters, while Samsung says some Galaxy devices require a built-in-DAC converter. Check the exact host model and the headset functions you need instead of assuming that every USB-C port supports the same audio path.
