Yes, a coaxial amplifier can help a TV antenna signal that is already usable but loses strength through a long cable run or splitters. It compensates for some distribution loss; it cannot create a signal the antenna does not receive. The answer here is about terrestrial TV antenna systems—not cable internet or every device that uses coax.
What a coax booster does
“Coax booster” is an imprecise label. For TV antennas, the relevant equipment is generally a preamplifier or a distribution amplifier. Both add gain to a signal, but they address different parts of an installation.
Antenna preamplifier
A preamplifier is installed near the antenna, before a long downlead can weaken the received signal. Antennas Direct says a low-noise amplifier may be a good choice for a cable run over 100 feet or an installation with splitters, and advises placing it as close to the antenna as practical. That is manufacturer guidance for its equipment, not an independent test or universal length rule. Antennas Direct’s preamplifier installation guidance

Distribution amplifier
A distribution amplifier is intended for a home coax network feeding multiple TVs or outlets. It compensates for loss introduced by splitting the antenna signal. Televes describes domestic distribution amplifiers with different output counts and gains, so the appropriate model depends on the installation. Televes distribution amplifier guidance

When an amplifier is likely to help
An amplifier is worth considering when reception is otherwise available, but signal distribution is the likely problem—for example, a long cable path or several splitters feeding multiple TVs. The antenna still needs to be suitable for the location and aligned well, and the amplifier needs correct placement and power.
- For signal loss along the cable before it reaches the home, consider a preamplifier near the antenna.
- For an antenna signal split to multiple rooms or TVs, consider a distribution amplifier designed for the required outputs.
- Match the device to the signal source, frequency range, gain and output needs, installation location, power method, and existing antenna and splitter setup. More gain is not automatically better.
Check the exact model’s specifications and compatibility before buying. Manufacturer product guidance establishes these categories and intended uses; it does not show that any one amplifier will improve every installation. Televes antenna amplifier product guidance

When a booster will not solve the problem
An amplifier cannot recover a broadcast signal that is absent or too weak to recover. Nor does it fix a damaged cable, poor connector, incorrectly aligned antenna, or every kind of interference. Televes lists several possible reasons an amplifier may not resolve pixelation or a black screen:
- The amplifier is not receiving power.
- The system is overdriven.
- Interference is present, including from nearby 5G or two-way radio signals.
- The antenna is poorly aligned, or the amplifier is too far from it.
- The incoming signal is too weak to recover.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not proof that any one is the cause in a particular home. Televes troubleshooting advice for pixelation or a black screen

How long can the coax run be?
There is no universal maximum cable length established by the manufacturer guidance cited here. The result depends on the signal received, the number of splitters and TVs, and the minimum signal the receiving TV needs. Cable quality and connectors matter too: Televes recommends good-quality, shielded RG-6 cable and avoiding unnecessarily long runs. Televes guidance on coax cable length
Troubleshoot before adding gain
- Confirm the service. The advice in this article applies to a terrestrial TV antenna. It does not establish that a generic coax amplifier improves cable internet.
- Check the antenna first. Confirm that its type suits your location and that it is positioned and aligned appropriately.
- Inspect the coax path. Check cable condition, connectors, splitters, and unnecessary cable length. Replace damaged parts and use suitable shielded cable.
- Identify where signal is being lost. A long run from the antenna points toward a preamplifier; a multi-room split points toward a distribution amplifier.
- Verify installation and behavior. Check power and placement, and watch for signs of overdrive or interference. If the cause is unclear, Televes recommends contacting an antenna installer or technical support.
Why results vary
Whether an amplifier helps depends on the whole antenna system: the signal arriving at the antenna, antenna choice and alignment, cable and connector condition, run length, splitters, and receiver requirements. Manufacturer guidance explains the intended roles of amplifiers and common failure causes, but it is not independent comparative testing. No general effectiveness percentage or single cable-length cutoff is established by the sources cited here.
