No—not by themselves. Deleting a file, issuing TRIM, and letting an SSD run garbage collection are normal storage-management operations, not proof that the data has been securely sanitized. TRIM tells a supporting SSD that certain logical pages are no longer valid; garbage collection later reorganizes valid pages and reclaims stale flash blocks. Neither operation, on its own, demonstrates that every physical representation of the data is inaccessible.
If you are selling, transferring, or retiring a drive, use a sanitization method that the exact SSD and interface support, selected for the sensitivity of the information. The current guidance is NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published September 26, 2025. Follow the drive maker’s current procedure and retain evidence that the operation completed.
What deletion, TRIM, and garbage collection actually do
File deletion changes the file system’s record
When you delete a file, the operating system normally removes or changes the directory information that identifies the file and marks its logical space as available for reuse. The NAND cells that once held the file are not necessarily cleared at that instant. Until other activity reuses those logical addresses, recovery may be possible through appropriate tools, although the exact result depends on the drive, operating system, and subsequent writes.
TRIM is a notification, not an eraser
TRIM is an operating-system-to-drive command. It tells a compatible SSD that specified logical ranges no longer contain data the file system needs. Samsung’s manufacturer FAQ describes it this way: “TRIM is a feature that allows OS to notify the SSD when data is marked as erased or no longer valid.” See Samsung Semiconductor’s explanation of internal SSD features.

That notification lets the controller avoid preserving invalid pages during later housekeeping. TRIM can improve write performance and reduce the work required during block reclamation, but it does not specify when a physical flash cell must be cleared, and it does not provide a completion certificate that a deleted file is unrecoverable.
Garbage collection reclaims blocks internally
Flash memory is written and erased in different-sized units. To make a block reusable, an SSD controller copies still-valid pages elsewhere, marks the old block for erasure, and then makes the reclaimed space available for future writes. This internal process is generally called garbage collection. Stale pages can be discarded because TRIM, ordinary overwrites, or later file-system activity have made them invalid.
Garbage collection is therefore a storage-efficiency process. Its timing depends on the controller, workload, available free space, power state, and other firmware decisions. A drive may reclaim a particular block quickly, much later, or not before the drive is powered down. That variability is useful for performance management but unsuitable as a security assurance.

Secure sanitization has a different objective from routine storage management. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 defines media sanitization as “a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” The question is not whether the file system now regards a file as deleted; it is whether an attacker using the relevant level of effort can still obtain the target data from the media.

TRIM operates on logical addresses exposed by the file system. An SSD controller translates those addresses to physical flash locations and manages stale and valid pages internally. As a result, a logical notification does not let you inspect or certify every physical location that may have held earlier data. NIST’s flash-storage guidance explains the practical consequence: an ordinary overwrite may miss “unmapped physical media,” where old data can remain.
That does not mean a deleted file is always recoverable after TRIM, nor that it is always unrecoverable. The official material does not establish a universal recovery rate or a fixed period after which TRIM guarantees physical erasure. It establishes that TRIM and garbage collection should not be represented as a verified sanitization result.
What current NIST guidance says about SSD sanitization
Rev. 2 is the current edition
NIST published SP 800-88 Rev. 2 on September 26, 2025. It supersedes Rev. 1 and places the emphasis on a sanitization program: identify the information and media, select an appropriate method and control level, perform the operation, and record the result. The method must fit the sensitivity of the data and the capabilities of the particular device.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 was published December 17, 2014 and is withdrawn. Its flash-specific appendix is still useful background because it warns that overwriting flash can reduce the media’s effective life and may fail to sanitize unmapped physical media. Do not treat Rev. 1 as the current program requirement; use Rev. 2 and the manufacturer’s current instructions.

The withdrawn appendix’s ATA SSD table lists device-supported approaches such as ATA sanitize block erase and cryptographic erase where available. Those are examples of commands that may be appropriate on a particular drive, not universal commands that every SSD or USB bridge exposes. The Rev. 1 status page confirms that the document has been withdrawn and superseded.
How common approaches compare

Whether an operation is categorized as Clear or Purge depends on the applicable guidance, device implementation, and verification. Do not infer a category solely from a button labeled “erase.”
A practical process for a drive you will transfer or retire
Use this sequence for a whole-drive disposition. It is intentionally device-specific: a procedure that works on one SSD can be unavailable or unsafe on another.

Record the manufacturer, model, firmware version if shown, capacity, and connection type. Determine whether the drive is attached through a native interface or a USB/SATA/NVMe bridge, because a bridge may not pass through every drive-level command.
- Define the required assurance. Decide whether the drive is being kept in service, transferred to another person, returned to a supplier, or retired. Classify the information and select the sanitization outcome required by your policy or contract. A routine deletion while keeping the drive is a different problem from disposal of a drive containing sensitive records.
- Check current manufacturer documentation. Find the procedure for the exact model and interface. Confirm whether the vendor supports Secure Erase, ATA sanitize, cryptographic erase, or another named function, and note prerequisites such as a supported boot environment. Do not substitute a similarly named utility from another product line.
- Back up anything that must be retained. A whole-drive sanitize operation is destructive. Verify the backup before starting; after sanitization, the original files should not be expected to return.
- Disconnect unnecessary storage. Select the target by model and serial number, not merely by capacity or a drive letter. This reduces the risk of erasing the wrong disk.
- Run the documented operation. Follow the vendor’s exact sequence, including any requirement to remove a security lock, boot from separate media, or keep stable power. Do not interrupt a sanitize command unless the documentation says how to recover.
- Verify and record the result. Use the verification step supplied by the vendor or your management procedure. Record the target identity, method, date, operator, software or firmware version, completion status, and any error. A progress bar alone is not an independent proof of sanitization.
- Escalate failures. If the drive does not expose a supported sanitize function, the command fails, or the required assurance cannot be validated, do not rely on TRIM or a normal format. Quarantine the drive and use an approved destruction process if policy requires a stronger outcome.
If you are keeping the SSD and deleting individual files
Whole-drive sanitization is usually incompatible with continuing to use the existing installation because it destroys the contents. For ordinary day-to-day deletion, enabling the operating system’s TRIM support helps the SSD manage invalid pages and maintain performance. It is reasonable to view this as maintenance, not as a promise of secure file erasure.

If a policy requires assured deletion of selected information while other data remains, first determine whether the SSD, its encryption design, and the approved software expose a documented, verifiable method for that use case. The sources cited here do not establish a universal per-file secure-delete command for SSDs. Do not advertise a tool as secure merely because it issues TRIM or overwrites a visible logical range.

Assuming a quick delete is a physical erase
A file-system deletion changes allocation metadata. It does not give you a report about every flash cell that previously contained the file.
Treating TRIM as an immediate wipe
TRIM is a notification. Garbage collection may act later according to firmware policy, and neither mechanism supplies the sanitization definition or verification required for a disposition decision.

Logical overwrites can miss unmapped physical media and may unnecessarily consume program/erase cycles. Use a drive-level method that the manufacturer and your current sanitization policy support instead.

Ignoring the connection path
An internal connection and an external enclosure may expose different commands. Confirm that the interface used for the operation can deliver the required sanitize function to the target controller.
Confusing old and current NIST editions
Rev. 1’s flash appendix is a useful explanation of limitations, but it is withdrawn. Cite and apply Rev. 2 for current guidance, then use the device maker’s instructions for implementation details.
Bottom line
TRIM tells an SSD that logical data is no longer valid, and garbage collection reclaims flash blocks containing stale pages. Those mechanisms support normal operation; they do not, by themselves, securely erase deleted data or prove that recovery is infeasible. For transfer or retirement, identify the exact SSD and interface, choose a supported sanitization method appropriate to the information’s sensitivity, follow current manufacturer instructions, verify completion, and use physical destruction when a supported, verifiable method is unavailable.
