Yes—but not as conscious memory. In plant science, “drought memory” describes measurable effects of an earlier water shortage on later growth, physiology, or responses to a second drought. Researchers often call the longer-lasting effects drought legacy effects. A tree’s growth can lag for years, although water status, photosynthesis, and survival may recover on very different schedules.
Previous drought does not automatically make a tree tougher. The outcome depends on species, drought severity, timing, tissue damage, soil conditions, and the function being measured. A controlled 2025 study, for example, found different responses in western larch, Douglas-fir, and black walnut seedlings rather than one universal form of resilience.
What “drought memory” means in trees
It is a biological history effect, not recall
Trees have no brain or nervous system that stores memories in the human sense. The word memory is shorthand for a lasting change caused by earlier conditions. Drought can alter roots, buds, wood formation, hormones, stored carbohydrates, microbes around the roots, or the hydraulic system that moves water. Those changes can influence what happens after rain returns or when drought strikes again.

Drought legacy and stress priming are related but different
A drought legacy is any measurable effect that persists after the original drought, including multi-year lags in tree growth or forest productivity. A narrower idea, stress priming, concerns how an earlier exposure changes the response to a later stress. Priming could produce a faster or stronger defense, but it could also leave a tree depleted and less able to respond. A study showing slower post-drought growth demonstrates a legacy; it does not by itself prove beneficial priming.
How drought can outlast the dry period
Drought affects several linked systems, and each can recover at a different rate:
- Water transport: Dry soil lowers the water available to roots and increases tension in the xylem, the tissue that conducts water upward.
- Gas exchange: Stomata close to limit water loss. That protects leaves but also reduces carbon dioxide uptake and photosynthesis.
- Growth: A tree may stop making wood, leaves, or roots while water is scarce. Rebuilding those tissues takes time after rewetting.
- Stored resources: Carbohydrates and nutrient balances can be altered by prolonged stress, affecting later growth and defense.
- Hydraulic integrity: Severe tension can produce embolisms that block water transport. Repair and replacement of damaged conduits may require new growth.
- Biological partners: Drought changes soil moisture and the activity of symbiotic microbes, potentially altering nutrient acquisition and root function.
Because these processes do not switch back simultaneously, a tree can look recovered in one measurement while still carrying a legacy in another. A full canopy does not prove that wood production or hydraulic safety has returned to its pre-drought state.

| Evidence scale | What is measured | What it can reveal | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controlled seedling experiment | Water status, gas exchange, biomass allocation, budbreak, root growth | Candidate mechanisms and species differences under known stress and rewatering schedules | Seedlings in a greenhouse may not respond like mature trees exposed to variable weather, competition, and soil conditions |
| Tree rings | Annual or seasonal changes in radial growth | Whether growth remains below or above expectation in years after drought | A ring records growth, not a single mechanism; climate, insects, disease, and competition can also affect it |
| Forest-scale observations | Gross primary productivity, canopy condition, mortality, or water fluxes | How drought legacies affect whole stands and carbon cycling | Different studies and sensors capture different functions, and causes are harder to isolate |
A 2020 review of drought legacies found that the size and duration of a legacy in the United States varied depending on whether researchers used tree-ring growth or gross primary productivity. That difference is not a contradiction: the measurements represent different parts of the forest system. The review also emphasized that the mechanisms and carbon-cycle consequences remain uncertain.
Does a previous drought make trees more resilient?
There is no universal answer. A 2025 controlled greenhouse study followed drought-primed seedlings of three species and found distinct outcomes:
| Species | Measured response after drought priming | What the result does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Western larch | Greater allocation to new roots | Suggests a possible shift toward below-ground investment in that experiment; it does not establish a benefit for mature larch in the field |
| Douglas-fir | Earlier budbreak and greater allocation to foliage | Shows a different developmental response from western larch; earlier budbreak could interact with later frost or renewed drought, so the study does not establish a universal advantage |
| Black walnut | No measured change in biomass allocation or gas exchange | Demonstrates that priming effects were not detectable for every species or measured trait under the study conditions |
The researchers explicitly caution that a controlled design cannot establish whether these responses persist under field conditions with fluctuating temperature, competing vegetation, uneven soil moisture, pests, and repeated drought. The study is valuable precisely because it rules out a simplistic claim that all trees “learn” to withstand the next drought.

Experiments on woody plants show why the answer changes with the variable being measured. A synthesis reports that leaf water potential and the drought hormone abscisic acid commonly return toward pre-drought values within days after rewatering. Gas-exchange measures, including photosynthetic performance, often recover more slowly.

| Function or signal | Typical pattern reported in controlled studies | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf water potential | Often rebounds within days after rewatering | Rapid water-status recovery does not prove that transport tissues or growth have fully recovered |
| Abscisic acid | Often declines toward earlier levels within days | Hormone recovery can precede recovery of photosynthesis or new tissue |
| Gas exchange | Usually slower than water-status recovery | Greater drought severity and hydraulic impairment can lengthen the delay |
| Stomatal function after severe stress | May remain depressed until damaged pathways are repaired or replaced | Juvenile-plant experiments do not predict an identical timetable for every mature tree |
| Radial growth and canopy production | Can show a legacy into subsequent years | Weather, insects, disease, and competition also influence annual growth |
At the severe end, drought can damage the hydraulic system. A 2018 review identifies catastrophic hydraulic failure as a principal mechanism involved in extensive crown death and tree mortality, while stressing that drought responses are multidimensional. Hydraulic failure is therefore an important pathway, not the only cause of death: carbon starvation, heat, pests, pathogens, and interactions among stresses can also matter.
Why the same drought leaves different legacies
Species and provenance
Different species vary in rooting depth, xylem structure, leaf habit, phenology, and their ability to close stomata without losing carbon uptake. Populations from different provenances can also carry genetic differences in timing and drought response. A response measured in Douglas-fir cannot be transferred automatically to black walnut or to another Douglas-fir population.
Severity, duration, and timing
A short spring dry spell is not equivalent to a multi-season drought that coincides with high heat. The developmental stage matters as well. Stress during bud formation, leaf expansion, or late-season carbohydrate storage can leave a different legacy from stress at another time of year. Repeated droughts may arrive before a tree has rebuilt roots, foliage, or reserves.

Soil texture, rooting depth, groundwater access, stand density, shade, and neighboring plants change how much water remains available. Symbiotic soil microbes can influence nutrient and water acquisition, and drought itself can reshape those communities. These factors help explain why a greenhouse result may not predict a forest response.

The trait chosen by the researcher
Growth, gas exchange, survival, and whole-forest productivity answer different questions. A tree can regain leaf water status while still growing slowly. A forest can maintain aggregate productivity even while some individual trees suffer. Any claim about memory should state the measured outcome, not treat one proxy as the entire tree.
Drought memory in the wider system
A 2024 review treats drought as a continuum rather than always as a sharply bounded event. Dry and wet periods can overlap, recur, and cascade through ecological, hydrological, and social systems. Its five case studies—Chile, the Colorado River basin, northeast Brazil, Kenya, and the Rhine River basin—describe four broad patterns:
- Impact and recovery: a pronounced shock followed by substantial return toward earlier conditions.
- Slow resilience building: gradual adjustment that improves the system’s ability to handle later stress.
- Gradual collapse: accumulated impacts erode function over time.
- High resilience–big shock: a system that usually absorbs disturbance but is overwhelmed by an unusually large event.
These are system-level archetypes, not four kinds of tree memory. They are useful for framing forests within watersheds and communities, but they should not be cited as direct physiological evidence for an individual tree.
How scientists test whether a tree carries a drought legacy
Tree-ring analysis
Researchers compare ring width or density before, during, and after drought, often against climate records and nearby reference trees. A persistent post-drought reduction can indicate a legacy. Ring evidence is strongest when the analysis accounts for other growth controls, because insects, disease, fire, competition, and unusually cold years can produce similar patterns.

Controlled drought and rewatering
Greenhouse or chamber studies let researchers impose a known drought, restore water, and measure roots, leaves, hormones, gas exchange, budbreak, and biomass. They are well suited to testing mechanisms and repeated-stress responses. Their trade-off is realism: pots, young plants, and stable temperatures omit many field interactions.
Forest-scale monitoring
Flux towers, remote sensing, inventories, and repeated canopy surveys can reveal whether productivity or water use remains altered across a stand. These methods capture ecosystem behavior but are less able to assign a particular legacy to one tissue or pathway.
Increment borers as a specialist method
An increment borer removes a narrow wood core so annual rings can be examined without felling the tree. It is a research instrument, not a shortcut to diagnosing drought damage. Sampling design, tree health, core handling, and climate comparison determine whether the resulting chronology is informative.

How to interpret a claim that trees “remember” drought
Use five checks before accepting a headline:
- What was measured? Ask whether the result concerns ring growth, a physiological variable, survival, or whole-forest productivity.
- When was it measured? Separate conditions during drought, immediate rewatering, and effects in later years.
- At what scale? Identify whether the evidence comes from seedlings, mature trees, or an entire forest.
- How severe was the stress? Duration, heat, soil drying, and the timing of repeat drought all matter.
- Which species or provenance? A result for one taxon is not a rule for all trees.
This framework prevents two opposite errors: treating a short-lived physiological change as a multi-year memory, and treating a multi-year growth lag as proof that every tree has been permanently damaged.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Evidence supports the existence of drought legacies: growth and ecosystem function can remain altered after water returns, sometimes for years. It also supports species-dependent priming and recovery, with faster rebound in some water-status measures than in gas exchange or growth. Severe drought can damage hydraulic function and contribute to mortality.
Evidence does not support a single recovery time, a guaranteed resilience benefit from prior drought, or a universal mechanism. The best-supported conclusion is conditional: a tree’s history can shape its later performance, but the direction, duration, and ecological importance of that effect depend on species, stress history, site, and the trait being observed.
