No. A conventional third-party pro gamepad is not guaranteed to work with PS5-version games. PlayStation’s current guidance says PS5 games can be played only with DualSense wireless controllers. Licensed third-party gamepads are intended for supported PS4 games running on a PS5, while certain specialty peripherals—such as racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks—can work with PS5 games when the individual game supports them.
The short answer: compatibility depends on the game format and controller type
The phrase “PS5 game” can describe two different situations. A PS5 console may be running the PS5 version of a title, or it may be running the PS4 version through backward compatibility. The controller rules are different for those formats.

Therefore, a controller having a PlayStation license, a “pro” label or a USB connection does not by itself make it compatible with every PS5 game. PlayStation also warns that not every officially licensed or third-party controller will work on PS5. Compatibility must be checked for the exact model and title.
What counts as a third-party pro controller?
Standard pro-style gamepads
A standard pro controller has the same basic layout as a conventional gamepad: two analog sticks, a directional pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons and system controls. Extra features might include rear paddles, remappable buttons, adjustable triggers, interchangeable stick caps or onboard profiles. For compatibility purposes, those additions do not change its category. It remains a standard gamepad.

PlayStation’s compatibility rule is the important distinction: licensed PS4 gamepads can be used with PS4 games running on PS5, but PlayStation’s FAQ states that they are not supported for playing PS5 games. This applies even when the controller was designed specifically for competitive play or carries an official license.
Specialty peripherals
Racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks are treated separately from ordinary gamepads. A supported, officially licensed wheel can function in a PS5 racing title, and an arcade stick can function in a compatible fighting game. The exception is based on the peripheral type and the game’s implementation, not simply on the presence of a license.
A specialty peripheral can still fail to work if the title does not support it, if the manufacturer lists only the PS4 version, or if a particular regional or hardware revision has different support. A wheel that works in one racing game should not be assumed to work in every other racing game.
Controllers for accessibility assistance
PS5 includes a second-controller-for-assistance feature. When supported, a second person can help operate the same game using another controller, including certain third-party devices. This is a specific accessibility function. Seeing a third-party pad recognized for assistance does not prove that it can serve as the main controller in every PS5 game or that all of its advanced buttons will operate normally.
Why PS4 and PS5 versions behave differently
The version selected on the console determines which input rules apply. A game may offer both versions, and the PS5 can keep both installed or let you switch between them. The title’s icon, game hub or storage menu normally identifies whether you are launching the PS4 or PS5 version.

- PS4 version: The PS5 is using backward compatibility. DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and supported licensed PS4 gamepads may be available.
- PS5 version: PlayStation’s stated rule is DualSense wireless controller support for standard gameplay.
- Cross-generation purchase: Owning both versions does not merge their controller support. You must check the version you actually launch.
Some games expose different features in each version. Haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and other DualSense functions are designed for PS5 software; choosing the PS4 version may permit an older licensed gamepad but remove those PS5-specific features. Conversely, choosing the PS5 version may restore the game’s enhanced features while restricting standard third-party gamepads.
How to check a controller before buying or installing a game
1. Identify the exact controller model
Record the complete product name, revision, connection mode and region. “Pro controller” is a marketing category, not a technical compatibility specification. A wireless and wired mode may have different support, and a refreshed model can differ from an earlier model with a similar name.

If it has a conventional two-stick gamepad layout, apply the standard-gamepad rule. If it is a wheel, arcade stick or flight stick, look for the game-specific peripheral list instead. Do not use the specialty-peripheral exception to justify a conventional pro pad.
3. Check the game version
Look for separate PS4 and PS5 entries in the console interface and in the publisher’s support information. A statement that a controller works on PS5 may mean “works with PS4 games on a PS5,” so read the version wording carefully.
4. Read the manufacturer’s current compatibility list
PlayStation recommends checking the manufacturer for the specific product and titles. Use the model number rather than relying on a retailer’s generic compatibility badge. Confirm whether support applies to the PS5 version, the PS4 version, or both.

5. Check the game’s own peripheral support
For a wheel, arcade stick or flight stick, the game developer’s control documentation is decisive. Look for supported input devices, button mapping instructions and any required in-game setting. A console-level license does not guarantee game-level support.

6. Verify the connection and firmware requirements
Check whether the product requires a USB cable, a wireless adapter, a firmware update or a particular operating mode. If the manufacturer lists separate PC, PS4 and PS5 modes, select the PS5 mode only when the title and device documentation say it is supported.
What officially licensed examples do—and do not—prove
PlayStation’s accessories listing includes officially licensed products such as Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded Wireless, Razer Raiju and Nacon Revolution 5 Pro. Their appearance on an official accessories page confirms that PlayStation recognizes the products as licensed accessories. It does not establish that every one works with every PS5 game, nor that every regional model has identical behavior.
For any of these or another licensed controller, check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information and the individual game’s requirements. Treat “licensed” as evidence of an approval relationship, not as a universal compatibility promise.

For readers who want pro-style customization specifically for native PS5 games, its first-party status removes the standard third-party gamepad question. You still need to pair it and keep the console and controller software current, but it is designed for PS5 use and PlayStation provides a PS5 pairing guide. “Can I use my PS4 pro controller to play a PS5 game?”
Not as a standard primary controller under PlayStation’s stated rule. If you launch the PS4 version of the game on your PS5, a supported licensed PS4 gamepad may work. If you launch the native PS5 version, use a DualSense wireless controller or another device explicitly supported by that title under the applicable peripheral rules.
“My controller is licensed. Why does the PS5 game ignore it?”
Licensing does not override the game-format rule. The title may be the PS5 version, while the controller is approved only for PS4 games on PS5. It may also require a particular wired mode, firmware version or game-specific profile. Consult the exact model’s support page and the game developer’s documentation.
“Will a wheel or arcade stick work in every PS5 game?”
No. Specialty peripherals are eligible for separate support, but each game must implement them. A wheel is relevant to a compatible racing game; an arcade stick is relevant to a compatible fighting or arcade title. Check the title’s supported-device list.

Menu navigation is not proof of in-game compatibility. A console can detect a USB or wireless device while a game rejects its inputs, omits button prompts or disables advanced controls. Test against the game’s documented support rather than the dashboard alone.

“Can I use it as the second controller for assistance?”
Possibly, if the device is supported for the PS5 second-controller-for-assistance feature. That use case is narrower than normal gameplay and does not establish compatibility as the primary controller.
Troubleshooting a controller that does not work
- Check the version you launched. From the game’s options or home-screen menu, determine whether the PS4 or PS5 version is running.
- Switch to the documented connection mode. If the manufacturer requires a cable, adapter or mode switch, follow that procedure exactly.
- Update firmware. Install the controller firmware specified by the manufacturer, then restart the PS5 and reconnect the device.
- Test a supported title. For a specialty peripheral, use a game that explicitly lists the device. Failure in an unsupported title is expected behavior, not necessarily a hardware fault.
- Check individual button mapping. A game may accept the controller but leave rear paddles, touchpad functions, motion controls, adaptive triggers or haptics unavailable.
- Contact the manufacturer with precise details. Provide the exact model, firmware, PS5 system version, game version and connection method. Ask whether the specific title is supported.
A factory reset or replacement should be considered only after compatibility has been established. No reset can make a standard third-party gamepad comply with a game that accepts only DualSense input.

The safest purchase process is to choose the game first, identify the version you will play, then verify the exact controller model against both PlayStation’s guidance and the manufacturer’s title list. Buying by the words “pro,” “licensed” or “PS5-compatible” alone leaves too much ambiguity.
