For Japanese subscribers, Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says unused Steam Wallet funds expire six months after they are added. The clause is explicitly limited to Japanese subscribers; it does not establish a general six-month inactivity rule for every Steam player. The countdown runs from each funds-addition date, not from the last time you log in.
What the Steam Subscriber Agreement says
Valve describes the Steam Wallet as a prepaid balance for ordering content and services, and says it can also be used to purchase hardware. The agreement’s six-month expiry sentence appears under a section titled “For Japanese Subscribers”: “Any funds added to your Steam Wallet that you have not used within six (6) months following the date you added them will expire, as required by Japanese law.” Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement also says users can review their funds and their expiration dates in the Steam Wallet in their Steam account.

Who the six-month term applies to
The clause is expressly introduced for Japanese subscribers. It should not be generalized into a policy that Valve cancels every player’s wallet balance after six months. The agreement attributes the term to Japanese law, but the cited text alone does not identify the specific statute or explain how it applies legally.
When the countdown starts
The agreement measures the six months from the date funds are added. It does not describe a deadline based on your last login or general account inactivity. Nor does its wording say that spending from one addition resets the expiry date for other funds; it refers to funds and their respective addition dates.

For the relevant account, check the Steam Wallet in your Steam account for the balance and any listed expiry dates, as the agreement directs.
Expiry is different from account cancellation
Valve’s agreement separately allows it to restrict or cancel accounts or subscriptions in specified circumstances, including breaches of its terms. It says unused wallet funds will not be refunded when cancellation is for breach or improper or illegal activity. That provision is distinct from the Japan-specific six-month expiry clause and does not establish a universal inactivity-based cancellation policy.

Other limits on Steam Wallet funds
The agreement generally describes added funds as non-refundable and non-transferable, subject to exceptions stated in the agreement, and says they have no cash value outside Steam. These general terms do not change the geographic scope of the six-month clause. Steam Support’s Steam Wallet guidance discusses wallet currency and existing balances; it does not independently establish a six-month expiry rule.
