Not automatically. Steam Frame Controllers have a documented compatibility fallback in SteamVR: it tries a Frame Controller binding first, then an OpenXR Generic Controller binding, and then an Oculus Touch binding remapped to the Frame layout. That makes support broad, but it does not guarantee that every VR title has a suitable binding or that every control will feel correct. Games without VR-input support can use a separate gamepad path in the Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.

The practical answer is therefore title-specific. A game may have native Frame support, work through a remapped OpenXR or Oculus Touch profile, accept gamepad input, or remain poorly supported. Test the actions you actually use instead of treating a successful launch as proof that every feature works.

What “compatible” means with Steam Frame Controllers

There are several different levels of compatibility, and confusing them is the main reason claims about “every VR game” become misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Native Frame Controller support

A game has the strongest support when its developers provide a binding specifically for Steam Frame Controllers. A native binding lets the developer choose actions and interactions for the Frame layout instead of relying on a translation from another controller type. Valve says tailoring a title to Frame Controllers gives users a better experience.

Automatic fallback support

If SteamVR cannot find a Frame-specific binding, Valve documents a fallback sequence. SteamVR checks for an OpenXR Generic Controller binding and then an Oculus Touch binding, remapping the available actions to the Frame layout. The game may therefore launch and accept input even though it was never configured specifically for Steam Frame Controllers.

Compatibility is not the same as a perfect control scheme

A remapped binding can make a title playable while still leaving awkward button placement, missing actions, or interactions that do not feel natural. Valve’s Steamworks documentation puts the distinction plainly: “While you will always get a better user experience by tailoring your title to the Frame Controllers specifically, our controller compatibility modes have become quite robust.” The statement describes a robust compatibility mechanism, not a promise that every title works perfectly.

Gamepad mode for titles with no VR inputs

Valve’s October 9, 2026 SteamVR beta notes add another path. In a VR game that does not support VR inputs, Frame Controllers default to gamepad input. You can change the preferred mode for that individual game in Steam Input settings or in VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page. Valve identifies this behavior as requiring both the Steam Beta and the SteamVR Beta.

Support level How input is supplied What it tells you
Frame binding The game or its input configuration provides a Frame Controller binding. Best opportunity for controls designed around the Frame layout.
OpenXR fallback SteamVR uses an OpenXR Generic Controller binding and maps it to Frame controls. Potentially playable, but the mapping was not authored specifically for Frame.
Oculus Touch fallback SteamVR uses an Oculus Touch binding and remaps it to the Frame layout. Another compatibility route; quality depends on the title’s available actions and binding.
Gamepad mode Frame Controllers present gamepad input for a title without VR-input support. Available as a per-game preference in the Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.

How SteamVR selects a binding

For a VR title, SteamVR’s documented order is important because it explains why one game can work immediately while another needs adjustment.

  1. SteamVR looks for a Frame Controller binding. If the title has one, that is the preferred route.
  2. If none is available, it checks OpenXR Generic Controller bindings. SteamVR can remap that configuration to the Frame layout.
  3. If an OpenXR Generic binding is unavailable, it checks Oculus Touch. That binding can also be remapped to Frame controls.
  4. If the title has no usable VR-input path, use the gamepad route where available. The October 9, 2026 beta behavior lets you choose the preferred mode per game.

Valve also describes SteamVR as able to attempt automatic rebinding for SteamVR Input and OpenXR games. Automatic rebinding is a convenience layer: native support and explicit bindings give developers and users the greatest control over actions.

Why a title can start but still be unsuitable

Launching successfully proves only that SteamVR found a way to expose input. It does not prove that every action is mapped, that gestures behave correctly, or that the default configuration is comfortable. A title can have a valid fallback while a particular interaction remains difficult because the original binding was designed for a different controller layout.

For example, basic menu selection may work while a less common action is unassigned. A game can also display controller prompts that refer to another device, making otherwise functional controls harder to learn. These are reasons to inspect the active configuration and test a complete play sequence rather than relying on the first successful button press.

1. Start the game and test the default binding

Launch the VR title through SteamVR with the Frame Controllers active. Test the actions you actually need: menu navigation, movement, turning, grabbing, selecting, and any game-specific interaction. Do not assume that a successful launch means the complete control set is available.

2. Identify which binding SteamVR selected

Open the game’s SteamVR controller-binding interface and inspect the active configuration. Look for a Frame Controller binding first, followed by an OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch configuration. This tells you whether the game is using native-style support or a fallback.

3. Inspect and change the binding when actions are missing

If an action is unassigned or mapped inconveniently, use SteamVR’s binding controls to review the available actions and choose a more suitable configuration. Valve’s SteamVR 1.24 announcement describes compatibility tools for choosing a controller type to emulate and rebinding OpenXR titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Try a compatibility mode when the title expects another controller

SteamVR compatibility mode can emulate a different controller type. This is useful when a game checks for a specific controller profile rather than accepting the Frame profile directly. Change the compatibility option, then test the game again.

5. Restart if the change does not take effect

Valve notes that some games may need a restart after compatibility options change. Close and relaunch the title before concluding that the new mode failed. If the game stores its own input state, check the in-game control screen again after relaunching.

6. Test the complete interaction set

Do not stop after verifying locomotion or the first menu. Check every action that matters in normal play. A fallback can cover basic buttons while leaving a less common action unavailable or awkwardly placed. Test both controllers, hand-specific actions, menus, grabbing, selection, and any action that you perform repeatedly.

7. Record the result as title-specific

Describe the game as using a native binding, a fallback, or gamepad input rather than simply calling it “compatible.” That distinction is useful if you return to the title after an update or share the setup with another player. Note which mode was active and whether you changed any assignments.

  1. Use the required beta branches. The documented behavior requires both the Steam Beta and the SteamVR Beta.
  2. Launch the game and open its Now Playing page.
  3. Open either Steam Input settings or VR Controller settings. The beta notes identify both locations for changing the preferred mode.
  4. Choose the preferred input mode for that game. Frame Controllers default to gamepad input for titles in this category, but the per-game setting lets you change the preference.
  5. Relaunch and test the title. Verify that menus and gameplay respond as expected after the mode change.

This path is different from remapping a SteamVR Input or OpenXR action set. A gamepad-only title is receiving gamepad-style input, not a newly created native VR interaction model. Whether that is useful depends on how the game was designed to be played. A title built around tracked hands may not gain meaningful hand interaction merely because its buttons can be presented as gamepad input.

If the setting is missing, first confirm that both beta branches are active and that you are changing the preference for the correct game. The beta feature is per game, so a mode selected for one title should not be assumed to apply to another.

How to judge compatibility for an individual game

Valve’s standalone verification criteria include checking whether the default controller configuration works well with Steam Frame Controllers. That is a reminder that compatibility is a per-title question, not only a platform feature.

Question to check Why it matters
Is there a native Frame Controller binding? It indicates that the title’s controls can be authored for the Frame layout rather than translated from another profile.
Can SteamVR use an OpenXR Generic Controller binding? This is the first documented fallback when a Frame binding is unavailable.
Can SteamVR use an Oculus Touch binding? This is the next documented fallback route.
Does the game support SteamVR Input or OpenXR rebinding? Those systems give SteamVR a set of actions it can attempt to remap.
Does the game lack VR inputs entirely? If so, investigate the per-game gamepad mode in the required beta branches.
Is the default configuration verified for Steam Frame? Verification addresses whether the supplied configuration works well, not merely whether the game launches.
Are the controls suitable for the game? A technically valid mapping may still be poor for frequent or precision-sensitive actions.

There is no current authoritative, title-by-title compatibility matrix established by Valve’s official material for this question. Do not label a named game “confirmed compatible” solely because SteamVR documents these general fallback mechanisms. Check the game’s actual binding and behavior.

A quick comparison worksheet

When comparing two games, use the same questions for both. First, look for a native Frame binding. Next, check whether SteamVR exposes an OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch fallback. Then determine whether the title uses SteamVR Input or OpenXR actions, or whether it has no VR-input support and must use gamepad mode. Finally, test the default configuration and rate the actions you care about: movement, turning, grabbing, menus and special interactions.

This avoids an unfair comparison in which one game is called “supported” because it launches and another is called “unsupported” because a single action was never tested. It also separates technical availability from comfort. Two games can use the same fallback while offering very different practical results because their action sets and interaction demands differ.

Common symptoms and what to try

The game launches, but one or more buttons do nothing

  • Open the SteamVR binding interface and check whether the missing action is assigned.
  • See whether another available configuration exposes the action through an OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch binding.
  • Try a compatibility mode that emulates the controller type the game expects.
  • Restart the title after changing compatibility options, because Valve notes that some games require a restart.
  • Test the action in a different scene or menu in case the game only enables it in a particular context.

The game accepts input, but the layout feels wrong

  • Determine whether the title is using a fallback rather than a Frame-specific binding.
  • Review the action-to-button assignments and choose a better available binding where possible.
  • For a repeatedly played title, treat the result as remapped compatibility rather than native support when describing it to others.
  • Pay particular attention to actions used repeatedly or with both hands; an awkward fallback can be more noticeable there than in menus.

The title ignores VR controls completely

  • Confirm whether the game supports SteamVR Input or OpenXR at all.
  • If it does not support VR inputs, use the gamepad workflow documented in the Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.
  • Open the game’s Now Playing page and set the preferred mode under Steam Input settings or VR Controller settings.
  • Relaunch after changing the mode and test both menus and active gameplay.

A mode change appears to have no effect

  • Check that both required beta branches are enabled for the gamepad behavior.
  • Confirm that the preference was changed for the intended title, not globally or for another game.
  • Close and relaunch the game after changing the setting.
  • If the title still behaves incorrectly, do not treat the general compatibility documentation as confirmation for that particular game.

Prompts show another controller’s labels

A fallback can translate actions without changing every on-screen prompt. Read the action names in the SteamVR binding interface and test the physical control rather than assuming a prompt proves that the mapping is wrong. If the action itself is missing or unusable, change the binding or compatibility mode and restart as needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Native support versus fallback: the practical trade-off

Native support is preferable when a title depends on controller-specific gestures, carefully placed buttons, or frequent interactions. The developer can map those actions intentionally for Frame Controllers.

Fallback support is valuable because it can make a larger library usable without waiting for every developer to publish a Frame-specific configuration. OpenXR Generic Controller and Oculus Touch mappings give SteamVR known action sets to translate. The trade-off is that translation cannot guarantee the same ergonomics or complete action coverage as a binding created for the target controller.

Automatic rebinding sits between those extremes. It can save setup time for SteamVR Input and OpenXR games, but it remains an attempt to infer a workable mapping. If an action is critical, verify it in the game rather than relying on the presence of an automatic configuration.

Requirements, limits and maintenance

The ordinary fallback process depends on SteamVR finding a usable binding. The game must expose an input system or controller profile that SteamVR can use; a general compatibility feature cannot create actions that a title does not provide. For a title with no VR inputs, the documented gamepad workflow adds the explicit requirement of both Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility can also change when a game updates its action set or when SteamVR changes a binding. Keep a note of any custom assignments and retest important actions after updates. If a title suddenly behaves differently, inspect the active binding again before assuming that the controller hardware has failed.

There is no published percentage that establishes how many VR games work, and the official material does not provide a current result for every individual title. Avoid converting broad fallback coverage into a numerical success claim. The most defensible description is always the mode actually shown in SteamVR and the behavior you observed.

Controller and battery context

Valve’s Steam Frame product information describes each controller as having standard gamepad inputs plus additional tracking and touch capabilities. Each controller uses one AA battery. Those hardware details explain why both VR-style mappings and a gamepad path are relevant, but they do not establish compatibility with any particular game.

For practical setup, have a fresh AA battery available for each controller and test the controls before committing to a long session. No official price, battery-runtime figure or universal accessory cost establishes the expense of this setup, so do not infer a total ownership cost from the compatibility documentation. The important software decision remains the binding mode: Frame-specific, OpenXR Generic fallback, Oculus Touch fallback, or gamepad input for a title without VR inputs.

What you can safely claim about a game

  • “Native Frame support” means a Frame-specific binding is available and the title’s configuration is intended for that layout.
  • “Works through SteamVR fallback” means SteamVR found an OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch binding and remapped it.
  • “Works in gamepad mode” means the title lacks VR-input support and is being used through the beta gamepad path.
  • “Unverified” is the accurate description when the title has not been tested or its default configuration has not been checked.

Valve’s compatibility documentation supports broad fallback coverage, but it does not provide a universal guarantee or a current authoritative result for every SteamVR title. The only dependable answer for a particular game comes from its available binding, its required input system, and a direct test of the actions you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Steam Frame Controllers work with every VR game?

No. SteamVR offers a broad fallback sequence, but a game may lack a suitable binding, omit actions or feel awkward when remapped. Check the individual title and test its important controls.

What binding does SteamVR try first?

It first looks for a Frame Controller binding. If none is available, it checks an OpenXR Generic Controller binding and then an Oculus Touch binding, remapping the result to the Frame layout.

Is an OpenXR or Oculus Touch fallback the same as native support?

No. A fallback can make a game playable, but it was not authored specifically for the Frame layout. Native or explicit Frame bindings generally provide more control over ergonomics and action coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I set up Steam Frame controller bindings?

Launch the game, open its SteamVR controller-binding interface, inspect the active profile, and test all important actions. If needed, choose another binding or a compatibility mode, then restart the game because some changes require a relaunch.

What if a VR game does not support Steam Frame controllers?

First determine whether it supports SteamVR Input or OpenXR rebinding. If it has no VR-input support, use the per-game gamepad preference on the Now Playing page under Steam Input settings or VR Controller settings. This documented behavior requires both Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.

Why does a game launch but have missing buttons?

Launching only shows that SteamVR found an input path. Inspect the active binding, look for an alternative OpenXR Generic or Oculus Touch configuration, try a compatibility mode, and restart after changing it.

Can I call a game compatible if it uses gamepad mode?

Describe it more precisely as working in gamepad mode. That means the game lacks VR-input support and receives gamepad-style input; it does not mean the title has native tracked-controller interactions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an official list showing which games are confirmed for Steam Frame?

The official material documents the compatibility mechanism and verification criteria but does not establish a current authoritative, title-by-title matrix. Confirm support by checking the game’s binding and testing it.

Do Steam Frame Controllers require special batteries?

Valve’s product information says each controller uses one AA battery. Keep a fresh AA battery available for each controller, but compatibility itself is determined by the software binding and input path.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Steam Frame Controllers do not work perfectly with every VR game by default. SteamVR first seeks a Frame binding, then falls back to OpenXR Generic Controller and Oculus Touch mappings; titles without VR inputs can use per-game gamepad mode in the Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta. Treat those as compatibility tools, not universal guarantees. Check the active binding, test every important action, use compatibility options and restart when required, and describe each game by its actual support level.
