Some do, but Steam has no genre-wide guarantee. Controller coverage, Steam Cloud, co-op modes, player limits and cross-platform support are set by each game. Read the current Steam Features row, then verify controls, cloud synchronization and platform limits before committing to a long-running farm.
What the Steam feature panel can—and cannot—tell you
Steam exposes these capabilities as per-game metadata rather than as a promise for every farming simulation. A title can list Steam Cloud but still require you to resolve sync conflicts manually. It can advertise online co-op while restricting who can open the farm save. “Partial Controller Support” also means a game may work well for movement while leaving menus, chat or text entry dependent on a keyboard.
Use the game’s current store page as the first check. Look specifically for controller wording, Steam Cloud, Online Co-op, LAN Co-op, Shared/Split-Screen Co-op, Cross-Platform Multiplayer and Remote Play. Treat a missing label as unconfirmed, not as proof that the feature is absent.
Controller support by game
Stardew Valley: explicit Xbox controller support
The Stardew Valley Steam listing explicitly says: “Xbox controller support (with rumble)! (Keyboard still required for text input).” That is the clearest controller signal in this group. An Xbox-compatible XInput pad is therefore the safest starting point, but keep a keyboard nearby for naming, chat and other text fields.

For local split-screen, Stardew Valley’s documentation requires a controller for each additional player. Connect and test every pad before creating the farm, including the button used to join. A single controller shared between players will not satisfy that local-player requirement.
Sun Haven: Partial Controller Support
Steam marks Sun Haven as “Partial Controller Support.” This confirms that controller play is supported in some form, but it does not promise that every screen or action has a complete gamepad mapping. Check inventory, crafting, dialogue, map and multiplayer menus before starting a permanent character. Keyboard-only actions can still exist even when movement and combat feel fine.
Coral Island: controller status unlisted in the reviewed panel
The reviewed Coral Island Steam feature panel did not expose a controller-support label. Do not promise full controller support from the store page alone. If you plan to play on a Steam Deck, console-style pad or Steam Input layout, test the current build’s bindings during the refund-eligible period and confirm that menus and text entry are usable.

Farming Simulator 22: check bindings for a large simulation interface
The extracted Steam panel for Farming Simulator 22 did not provide a controller-rating label. GIANTS Software’s multiplayer material discusses controller-using players, but that is not the same as a complete Steam controller certification. Farming Simulator 22 exposes many vehicle, equipment and management controls, so inspect the in-game binding screen and confirm that you can reach the functions you use most.
Steam Deck and Steam Input
A Steam Deck presents a controller-first interface, but Deck usability is still title-specific. A game may have native XInput support, rely on Steam Input, or leave some actions to the virtual keyboard. On the game’s Steam page, read the current controller label; then launch the game and test movement, menus, text fields, map access and multiplayer joining. Save a working layout before beginning a long farm.
Steam Cloud: what syncs and what it does not
All four reviewed games list Steam Cloud. That means Steam can upload and download supported save files between devices, but it does not turn a cloud save into a shared multiplayer world. Cloud synchronization also depends on Steam completing its upload; closing the client immediately after saving can leave the newest file only on the original machine.

Safe cloud-save procedure
- On the game’s Steam library page, open Properties and check the General section for the Steam Cloud option. Leave synchronization enabled on every device you intend to use.
- After quitting the game, wait for Steam to show that the cloud update has finished before switching computers or launching the game elsewhere.
- If Steam displays a cloud conflict, compare the local and cloud timestamps and choose deliberately. Select the copy that contains the latest intended progress; do not click through the dialog without checking the dates.
- Launch the game on the second device and verify that the expected character or farm appears before making new progress.
Cloud sync is not a backup strategy by itself. A mistaken conflict choice can replace the copy you wanted, and a save can be damaged before Steam uploads it. For a valuable farm, keep an additional local backup using the game’s documented save location and your operating system’s normal file-copy tools.

Stardew Valley’s host-owned world
In Stardew Valley co-op, the host owns the farm save. Farmhands cannot open that world while the host is offline, even when Steam Cloud is enabled. Cloud synchronization moves the host’s save between the host’s devices; it does not transfer ownership to another player or make the world independently available to farmhands.
Multiplayer modes and player limits
The following figures are the limits stated by the cited Steam listings or official publisher material available for these editions. A listed maximum is not a promise that every platform combination can use it.

Stardew Valley’s eight-player wording
The Steam description says “8 Player Farming! Invite 1-7 players to join you in the valley online!” That is an eight-player farm, not eight additional guests. LAN and shared/split-screen options are separate from online play, and Remote Play Together is a streaming feature rather than native cross-platform networking.
Sun Haven’s eight-player wording
Sun Haven’s listing says, “Share a farm and play with up to 8 friends online, or keep to yourself and play solo.” The wording describes eight friends joining the host, so confirm how the current build counts the host and whether a specific platform imposes a lower lobby limit.

Coral Island states: “Team up with up to 3 friends (4 farmers total) to build the farm of your dreams!” Plan for four farmers altogether. The cross-platform label is useful, but platform, edition and version compatibility should be checked before scheduling a session.

Farming Simulator 22’s platform-dependent ceiling
Farming Simulator 22 lists online and cross-platform multiplayer. In an official 2021 multiplayer article, GIANTS Software notes a limit of up to six players when a console hosts. That example shows why the headline feature and the usable lobby size are not always identical: host platform can change the ceiling.

“Online co-op” only means that players can connect over a network. It does not establish that a Steam player can join a console player. Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 list Cross-Platform Multiplayer. Stardew Valley’s documentation says cross-platform play is generally unsupported, with an exception between PC versions. The reviewed Sun Haven listing confirms online co-op but does not establish a cross-platform feature.
Before buying for a group, write down each person’s platform, game edition and current version. Have the intended host create a test lobby, invite one player from every platform combination and verify that the session appears in the in-game invite flow. A successful Steam friend invite alone does not prove that console matchmaking will work.

- Check the store metadata. Open the current Steam page and read the Features row. Record the controller label, Steam Cloud status, multiplayer modes, Remote Play wording and any cross-platform label.
- Identify the controller path. Determine whether your pad is an Xbox/XInput model, a PlayStation-layout device or a Steam Input configuration. Connect it before launching and confirm that the game detects the intended device.
- Test the complete control loop. From the title screen, navigate menus, open inventory and maps, enter text, and perform the actions you will repeat most. For local co-op, connect one controller per additional player and verify each join prompt.
- Enable and verify Steam Cloud. Turn on the game’s Steam Cloud setting, quit normally, wait for the upload indicator to finish, then launch on a second device and confirm the save appears.
- Choose the host deliberately. In host-owned games such as Stardew Valley, use the player whose device and schedule can reliably host the world. Explain that farmhands cannot access that save while the host is offline.
- Confirm the lobby limit and platform mix. Count the host in the advertised maximum, check the platform-dependent rules, and make sure everyone runs a supported edition and version.
- Run a short multiplayer test. Join, move between areas, open menus, save and reconnect. Fix controls or network issues before investing in an irreversible farm layout.
Common failures and practical fixes
The controller works in Steam but not in the game
- Close the game, connect the intended pad, and relaunch so the title detects it during startup.
- Check whether Steam Input or the game’s native mapping is active; avoid running two competing remappers at once.
- Try an Xbox/XInput profile when the listing specifically names Xbox controller support.
- For partial or unlisted support, keep a keyboard available and test every menu before committing to a long session.
The newest save is missing on another device
- Return to the original device, launch the game and quit normally so the save is written.
- Wait for Steam Cloud to finish uploading, then launch on the second device.
- If a conflict appears, compare timestamps and select the intended newer copy rather than accepting automatically.
- Do not continue playing on both devices until one authoritative save has been chosen.
A friend cannot join
- Confirm that the game actually supports the desired mode: online, LAN, split-screen or Remote Play Together.
- Check the host’s platform, because cross-platform support and player ceilings can depend on it.
- Verify that every player is on the same supported edition and current version.
- For Stardew Valley, ask the host to launch the farm; a farmhand cannot open the host’s world independently.
Local co-op has missing input
- Connect one controller for each additional local player and assign each device in the game’s join screen.
- Check that menus and text fields have a usable input method; a gamepad may not replace the keyboard for chat or naming.
- Test all players in a disposable save before using the main farm.
Which compatibility profile fits your group?
- Want the clearest controller guarantee? Stardew Valley explicitly names Xbox controller support, while still requiring a keyboard for text input.
- Need the largest advertised online groups? Stardew Valley and Sun Haven list up to eight players or friends, but Stardew’s host-owned save rule affects availability.
- Need documented cross-platform play? Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 list it; verify platform combinations and versions before purchase.
- Need a four-person cross-platform farm? Coral Island’s listing sets the total at four farmers.
- Need a simulation with console-host guidance? Farming Simulator 22 has cross-platform multiplayer, with GIANTS reporting up to six players when a console hosts; check the current platform limit.
Bottom line for Steam farming-sim buyers
Check compatibility per title, not by genre. The four games reviewed here all list Steam Cloud, but only Stardew Valley gives an explicit Xbox-controller statement, Sun Haven is partial, and the reviewed Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 panels leave controller status unlisted. Player counts range from four farmers to eight-player farms, and cross-platform play appears only where the listing says so. A five-minute controller, cloud-sync and test-lobby check can prevent losing progress or discovering a platform mismatch after your group has committed to a farm.
